Craft

I have enjoyed developing my skills as a designer through Visual Communications and the craft sessions as well as the tasks provided. It has pushed me to be better, to come up with better concepts and to refine my skills. It has helped me produce pieces that I believe are fit for a portfolio and I will use them for it. 

I’ve been inspired by craft and refining my work from the year has shown me how much it has improved me as a designer and my skills.

Book Cover

This is the final crafted version of the book cover for Stephen Chobsky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower. 

The font I chose to use was Tox Typewriter, sticking with the theme of the typewriter. It is also similar to the font used on the introduction page of the original book and is also used in the movie poster. It also fit in really well the image. It was simple and didn’t draw away from the image. 

I’m really happy with the final result even. It took a lot of experimentation and time to get it exactly how I wanted it but because of that it turned out even better than if I hadn’t experimented. I had a lot of fun doing it as well.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower- Artwork

The Image I ended up using incorporated the wallflower from my previous attempts but included a few other elements that I felt represented what I wanted to communicate. I chose the typewriter because it is an image used often in the book. The paper inside the typewriter say’s dear friend. This is what Charlie writes in all of his letters throughout the book.

Process Work: Book Cover

Different variations of the same images and concept. Playing around with colour as well.

I liked these all as individual images but in terms of the book I wanted to make them the cover of- they didn’t work.

The flower is a wallflower- representative of Charlie who is classified as a wallflower, the red sticks to the theme of the original cover and the green links to the movie cover. The flower is in a wine bottle to highlight one of the themes of the book which is drinking and socialising, coming of age.

I decided to rethink the concept and kept only the wallflower as imagery.

Behance

Through this project, I’ve learnt how to use Behance as a social media platform and have developed an online portfolio that showcases my work. It is a useful platform that I’ve used to talk to other creatives and to find inspiration. 

I’ve fallen in love with the platform and intend to use it as a designer in the future.

Reflect

Over the past year. the craft classes have expanded my knowledge. They have taught me new things and helped me to define my creativity. During the time I’ve spent refining my craft pieces, I’ve learnt more about my style and voice as a designer, as well as my capabilities. I’ve had to do extensive research, think outside the box and engage with an online process book rather than the type I would normally do (which is paper based).

I’ve experimented with new mediums but found myself leaning back towards the ones I always use, rather improving my skills with those than exploring unfamiliar skills.

Choosing a Book

For the book cover, I wanted to use a book I was familiar with so I could effectively translate the story onto the cover. I wanted to be able to communicate the essence of the book with the cover. 

I went through hundreds of book images and inspirations. I eventually decided on the book by Stephen Chobsky- The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

The book is a coming-of-age story about a boy named Charlie. It was published in 1999. Charlie is a wallflower, always watching from the sidelines. In this book he comes out from his shell.

LP Cover: Refined

This is the final version of my LP Cover.

It includes both the image and album title as well as the band name. I chose the band name’s font because it is light, floral as well as easy to read. It is called Brownhill. It also goes well with the image. The font below is Times New Roman. I wanted to use a simple font rather than the same font as used in the band name. I chose to use this font because it is beautifully designed and compliments both the image and the band name.

I chose to keep the cover in black and white because it looks neat, the image stands out and it goes with my image as a designer. 

I would love to include this in my portfolio and think it turned out really nicely.
