Perez Art Museum Analysis
In the perez Art Museum current exhibition, it caught my attention to perceive perhaps subjectively an artwork by a hispanic artist called Julio Galan and his oil on canvas about 30 x 24 inches piece made in 1987 called “La China Poblana” (The Chinese Pueblan) which basically means the mexican women from the late 17th early 18th century whose heritage was of mixed blood and used to dress in an elegant manner and with colorful costumes, however, its relationship with the asian culture is subjectively unknown. The second axis will be the artist's approach to Mexican culture, since his work integrates folkloric elements and popular culture from Mexico, such as traditional crafts and clothing. However, I gained curiosity by some more of his works and finalized liking many of his paintings. After investigating information about Julio Galan through the web I realized that he makes a kind of personal representations, in a thousand ways, looking for who he is. All his work seem like a self-portrait with many different versions of himself. And is that the artist is constantly transformed through the appearance, and the disguise is a vehicle to embody another person, or his other personality.
The second piece that caught my attention was from the artist Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, the piece titles as King for an Hour, made in 2011 with Oil on canvas and measuring 98 3/8 x 78 3/4 inches. However, I seemed to not feel profoundly attached to this piece due to the monochromatic tones on the painting, this is of course, a subjective critique, I seem to feel more interested into expressionistic paintings from artists such as Edvard Munch or Cuno Amiet; use of vibrant and dynamic brushworks. This painting seemed to lack these properties and composition wised looked improvised, like a quick do sketch style, in comparison to Julio Galan’s piece The Chinese Pueblan, this painting, even though I must emphasize; belongs to an artists whose cultural backgrounds are completely different from Julian’s, it still looked like an effortless work. I must not deny that the facial expression of the subject is very charismatic and appealing. Additionally, both paintings are contemporary artworks, therefore, criticism of art is abandoned and the focus is on social issues is more relevant as well.

Katherine Orozco “Untitled” 32 x 22 in Acrylic on canvas
Katherine Orozco’s fascination to portraiture creations are driven by a reverence for Italian and classical Renaissance period paintings as well as a motive to challenge classical constraints merged into the modern art world.
