Moth orchids like all epiphytes (epi:over + phyte:plant) who dwell on larger plants mostly depend on tropical shower rains for their water needs. These brief shower-downs are all they need to absorb enough water with their spongy aerial roots. So give them that to make them feel at home :)

Have you ever seen a plant getting an infusion therapy? :)  Well here is my philodendron xanadu drinking from a glass of water. It looks like having an infusion drip from a glass bottle. It’s a good example of adventitious roots that a philodendron sends down. It burst out a root system as soon as it touches a favorable medium. Beware as this medium may well be your beloved carpet !

Philodendrons, meaning tree (dendron) lovers (philo), are mostly tropical climbers. They depend on rocks and trees to reach the upper canopy. With the help of their aerial and adventitious roots they cling on to tree trunks; hold them, hug them and sometimes strangle them while growing upwards and maturing into adult forms. With such a lifestyle they no longer need to touch the soil with their trunks, they just need to send down their long roots to the soil. That’s why when potting a philodendron cutting one doesn’t need to bury the main plant inside the pot. It’s sufficient for it to hoover above the pot provided its roots buried in the soil.
