FORMER OILERS HEAD COACH BUM PHILLIPS DIES AT 90 - Texas legend and former Houston Oilers head coach Bum Phillips has died at the age of 90.

Phillips’ son, Texan’s Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips, posted a tweet saying, “Bum is gone to Heaven-loved and will be missed by all -great Dad, Coach, and Christian.”

Phillips was a legend in Houston, having coached the Oilers from 1975 through 1980, guiding the team to the AFC Championship game two straight years. Both years, Houston fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Phillips compiled a 55-35 record as coach of the Oilers.

Phillips was eventually was fired by owner Bud Adams, and in 1981, he took over the Saints head coaching job.

Phillips usually wore his cowboy hat while on the sidelines, but he didn’t wear one when his team played in domes because, as the story goes, his mother told him not ever to wear hats while he was indoors.

After learning of Phillips death, Houston Chronicle sports writer John McClain tweeted, “When he died, Bum Phillips was trying to raise money to build the home for deaf children on his ranch.”
