Conclusion - an endless road ahead
Lessons I have learned so far:
I have really enjoyed my first few weeks on placement. I have found Schon’s in-action reflection is what I lean towards, and, rather than dwelling on them negatively, I am learning to embrace my mistakes and use the experience of them to build upon in my quest to become an excellent practitioner.
Some of the learners I teach are quite challenging but I am glad that I did not assume the negative stance towards them that some of my colleagues have, instead I got to know them with a positive attitude and without preconceptions so that I now have a good working relationship with most of them and they know that I am interested in their progress and want them to succeed.
Lesson planning is an art form! But practise makes perfect and I will be getting plenty in the coming weeks. I have struggled to explicitly apply learning theory, only to discover that I have been using them without realising so this is something I am going to continue to research and embrace, rather than be in fear of.
I am not afraid of being in front of a class. In my research into behaviour management, and from watching teachers in action, I hope to build on my calm and authoritative manner to become a calm and consistent practitioner with an emotionally secure classroom where learners can feel safe and confident (Dix, 2007).
Finally, an important lesson which I have learned: there is no end to learning, even the most seasoned practitioner needs to keep learning, so the practice of reflecting on my practice, evaluating and challenging my practice, values and beliefs and applying educational research as well as maintaining knowledge of my subject area that I am learning throughout this course I will continue to use throughout my career so that I am always up to date in my practice for the benefit of my learners.
