Hibiscus Flower

Hibiscus, or sometimes known as rose mallow, comprise over several hundred species of flowering plants native to subtropical, tropical, and warm temperature regions. They can be both annual and perennial, coming in the forms of plants, shrubs, and even small trees.

A bush of hibiscus grows near my home, proving to be resistant enough to grow back even after being moved and replanted.

Temperate Rainforests In Washington

Temperature rainforests occur in temperate zones that are moist and receive heavy rain fall which results in the growth of various mosses, ferns, and other flora.

The rainforests in Washington receive a precipitation of around 150 inches (380 cm) annually and are dominated by coniferous trees such as Sitka Spruce, Western Hemlock, Western red cedar, and Coast Douglas-fir.

The photographed tree is young and offers only a peak of what lies deeper within the rainforests. It is currently growing near Madison Creek Falls and the Elwha River in Clallam County, WA.

Port Angeles, WA

Port Angeles is located in Clallam County, WA and has a reported population of 19,960 as of 2020 compared to a population of 741,251 in Seattle, WA which is a 2.5 hour drive away if taking a ferry.

Prior to European exploration, the land had been occupied by indigenous peoples such as the Klallam and Makah tribes. In 1791, Spanish explored Francisco de Eliza came around to claim the harbor for Spain, naming it Puerto de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles. While trade did occur with the indigenous tribes present, it wasn't until the 19th century that European Americans actually began to settle in the area, soon creating a small whaling, fishing, and shipping village. The city's name would eventually be shorted to Port Angeles Harbor.

Port Angeles wishes to celebrate its indigenous heritage, doing so through cultural centers, museums, art, parks, and various events held throughout the year. If visiting the city, you'll even notice that the street signs are in both English and the Klallam language.

Bumblebee wings beat 130 times or more per second which helps vibrate flowers until they release of pollen. This process is called buzz pollination.

There are about 435,000 land plant species on Earth with 36.5% being considered 'exceedingly rare' as they've only been recorded less than five times.

Rare species have been noted to appear more likely in areas such as Costa Rica, Madagascar, South America, South Africa, and Southeast Asia.

Fun Fact of the Week

The largest deer species is the moose which can grow up to 6.5 feet tall from hoof to shoulder, weighting around 1,800 lbs. The smallest is the Southern pudu which only reaches the height of about 14 inches and weights around 20 lbs. That's a 64 inch, 1,780 pound difference!

There are an estimated 50,000 grizzly bears in North America, only 1,200 of which are found in the lower 48 states.

Northwest Territories, British Columbia, western Alberta, Yukon, and Alaska are home to a majority of North America's grizzly population!

Panorama Shots of La Push, Washington

During my last visit to La Push, WA, I had taken two panorama pictures at the James Island View Point near First Beach. The first photo was taken facing North while the second was facing South.

While the photos were taken on a phone and aren't to the same quality as my camera, I think it's interesting to see the contrast between skies which is also visible in my previous photos. The inland sky is far more cloudy and grey while the sky over the ocean is clear and blue. Nevertheless, both are beautiful.
