My friends always seem hesitant to say, or not say, that they "like" certain paintings and drawings of mine. (First of all you are not obligated to.) Mostly, they'll say "who is it?" A misguided attempt to find recognition. They aren't meant to be an exact replica of anybody; but if you're wondering whose face I referenced while creating art in solitude in my apartment, isn't that obvious? Which leads to the really interesting part: it seems they're afraid to point out who these studies look like, because they aren't pretty. Don't you know? Theres nothing particularly interesting about replicating a "pretty" face in art. (A broad generalization that can easily be proven wrong, I know.) There's nothing strange, haunting, disfigured, ambiguous, or unsettling to keep your attention. I'm not interested in painting pretty representations of people and that's ok. Next time say, "Wow, Kayls, that kinda looks like you on your absolute worst day!" And I'll smile. Ok longest Instagram caption you'll ever see from me. #art #portraiture
