COSPLAY TIP - Floor tiles!

This one is for all the filthy poor millennials who can only dream of having a “craft room”. Reblog to save a fellow cosplayer’s lease bond from suspicious crafting stains 😂

Living in apartment/rental accommodation can really impair cosplay progress. No space for a table, no shed, no garage, not enough room to swing a cat (let alone own one.)  So how do you keep up with your crafting? The solution is to buy a floor tile. Place it down anywhere and you’re ready to work.

They’re heat proof* so you don’t need to worry about melting that awful synthetic carpet with your heat gun. Paint and glue spills can be cleaned up easily. The smooth flat surface is perfect for worbla work. It can then be stored up against a wall when not in use, so it takes up barely any space at all.

Basically, I love my floor tile and I wouldn’t have been able to complete any of my costumes without it. Sharing this tip in the hopes it might be useful to cosplayers stuck in a similar living situation ^_^

*to the best of my knowledge, as all the ones I’ve seen retailed here are heat proof. Check first on a case by case basis.

Securing your flower crowns.

The first time I wore a flower crown, I foolishly thought it would magically stay on because I’d made it to shape. Mother Nature quickly proved me wrong as she whisked it off my head. But I learnt from my mistake.

You’ll need two small hair elastics, and two bobby pins. Figure out where you’re going to secure the flower crown. Mine attaches slightly behind my ears but it may vary depending on your hair styling. Loop the elastic through itself around the base wire. Thread a bobby pin through the free end. Do the same on the other side. As you place the crown on your head, slide the bobby pins down into your hair/wig.

This arrangement with just two elastics+pins held up in 46 km/h winds so I’m fairly confident with its efficacy ^_^

Cosplay Tip! Empty spools work exceptionally well as connector parts for lightweight items, like antlers/horns in this example.

Using outdated memes to share important info? Guilty. This is a PSA for all the kids who are getting into SFX make-up through cosplay. If you’re going to be applying liquid latex directly to your skin, look for brands that are specifically formulated for cosmetic use. Kryolan, Ben Nye, and Mehron are all internationally available safe options. Generally speaking, these latex brands have a higher water/lower ammonia/lower solids percentage, which means they have been refined to a higher degree, apply more smoothly to your skin, and are less likely to cause a reaction (although you should always do a patch test first!). They’re less smelly too! The liquid latex that you find at art stores and hardware stores should not be applied to your skin. Save those ones for moulding/casting projects!

First proper look at my Cloud Kill from Borderlands 3. I’m most pleased with the subtle hex shimmer effect, but like omg this prop is cursedddd. So many things went wrong during the build, but it’s done. It’s DONE. The primary materials used are XPS board and epoxy resin.

I suggest that we start using the term ‘creatives’ instead of ‘content creators’ for authors/artists/gifmakers/podficcers for a few reasons, and chief among them are these;

we can’t always be our most productive, but there’s a terrible trend of fandom folks feeling bad if they don’t have something new to post every few weeks

you’re still a creative person even if you aren’t creating something at a given time, for whatever reason

and something it’s taken me far too long to learn myself: making things is not the rent you pay to be part of a community

2022 EDIT - This website is actually not super great for anything prior to the 20th century (admittedly i was not familiar enough with older eras to tell the difference, my expertise is all in the last 100 years and the 20th century costumes from this website legitimately are pretty close to what they’re supposed to be) as the costumes are meant to be recognized on the stage by everyday folk, NOT to actual historians.

Here’s something I don’t think I’ve talked about before - using Reflective Tape as a substitute for LEDs.

The effects of LEDs are often overwhelmed in bright environments, like direct daylight, with flash cameras, or under strong stage lights. It’s a bit of a bummer going to all that effort for them to not show up visibly. We knew we were likely to encounter all three of these situations with our Borderlands costumes, so we tried out reflective tape as an alternative. Instead of being overpowered by strong lights, it ends up shining even brighter!

(It’s a lot cheaper too)

Hey guys, I made a quick little tutorial on French Seams. I’ve done about 20+ meters of them in the past week, so I was on a bit of a roll lol. French seams are a handy technique to know for: - preventing seams from fraying without using an overlocker - creating tidy looking seams inside unlined garments Kind of a noob topic, but I thought it might be handy for some beginner cosplayers :)
