I think this will speak to math students.
When a student who has refused to keep any piece of graded work and took zero notes gets upset with me that he has nothing to use on the open book final.
@kimmlazzara sent me her new classroom rules and they are spot on! Way to connect with the students!!! https://www.instagram.com/p/Bpk90paFF4t/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=118i3huozcai5

When students refuse to take any notes
I’m like:
They’re like:
When a parent tries to tell me how to teach
I’m all:
“I decided to become a teacher because I knew what it was like to grow up poor, and I wanted to help kids in similar circumstances. I didn’t expect it to be easy. But I guess I thought there’d be only one or two kids acting up in class, and everyone else would be paying attention. Instead it’s only one or two kids who actually behave. I’m drained every day. I’ve been teaching for thirteen years. And if it wasn’t for summer break, I’d have quit already. Forty percent of my job rating is based on standardized testing. It’s the only job I know where your performance is based on how other people behave. I can’t control what’s going on outside my classroom. I can’t control if my kids are from abusive households, or don’t eat breakfast, or can’t get to school on time. But those things affect my rating when they show up in test scores. I need to find a new career where my performance is based on me.”
Le sigh.
I shared this immediately on Facebook, not giving a single shit that it’s a holiday and most people don’t want to think about anything negative.
I have 99 problems and they’re all 4th graders stealing my pencils.
mine are 12th graders
Okay, why do teachers sometimes call on the child who wasn't focusing to answer the question?(it's literally one of the most embarrassing things you guys do).
Well personally I would say that “literally the most embarrassing thing” I do is trip over my rug and squawk like a bird that’s just been shot from the sky about once a day.
But to answer your question, I would guess that some teachers probably do it to the kids who aren’t paying attention because they’re trying to get them to PAY ATTENTION. Because trust me, when you’re trying to explain something to a class and you’re being blatantly ignored, it’s one of the most discouraging (not to mention incredibly rude) things ever.
There is really no acceptable reason to be obviously inattentive to someone who is speaking to you, and this applies to everyone, not just students. It’s just about being a decent person, no matter how old you are.
