The box-patterned gecko’s dome-like scales are covered in tiny hairs and that keep water from sticking to them. But there’s more. As the water droplets combine, they can actually fly off the gecko. They trade in some of their surface energy (the inter-molecular bonds that keep the drops circular) for kinetic energy. The result? Hopping droplets and an extremely waterproof reptile.
