Memorie dal Carcere, a project about photography and Prisoners.
“Memorie dal Carcere” (Memories from Prison) is a long-term project held in some Italian prisons, a laboratory where inmates, through photography and its language, can begin a therapeutic path of images and words, evoking emotions, memories and hopes.
The idea is to bring art in these places which are so alienating and full of suffering, we are convinced that beauty is an opportunity to generate reflections, create relationships and positive reactions.
In this sense the inmates are encouraged to get in touch with their emotions and with their own memories, activating a process of (re)discovering of their own subjectivities that brings to the surface the hidden features of the self, often submerged by the deviant aspects of their own personal lives.
The laboratory is organised in a series of meetings inside these prisons where the curators and the inmates perform a work divided into several phases:
a large amount of images, collected thanks to the contributions of 40 internationally renowned photographers, is presented to the group of prisoners;
these images are gradually selected by the inmates according to their motivations and personal photo stories are developed by each of them;
starting from the photographic stories every inmate expresses his choices by writing a text: a story of his own life, a poem, simple thoughts about the photos, etc …
all the selected images and the texts will be shown in an exhibition inside the prison, in the spaces dedicated to the meetings with the family members;
in the meantime, all the work is documented through the realization of photographs, videos and a publication of a book in which images and words interact , to leave even outside the prison a track, an evocative proof of the work done inside.
