i wanted to write my thoughts upon finishing my royal nemesis but i was busy on the day and then this atrocious heatwave came upon us and hasn't left. we're talking 30°C in the coolest room in my home (apparently that's 86°F) in the evening and the warmest nights on record. also the internet was down on sunday and monday evening.

so i'll just jot a few things down while sitting in front of the fan.

i wasn't watching this drama for the plot. to me, this is a character study more than anything else. and in that way i loved it. i was too busy enjoying the se gye & seo ri dynamic to try and decipher the meaning of the red comet or whatever.

so the idea that seo ri had to go back and alter their past ending in order to save present-day se gye? it makes sense for her as a character. i don't find it that compelling or novel otherwise. but it is a good excuse to watch se gye fall apart and be mended together at the sight of her healthy self. and heo nam jun does it so well.

one thing i loved about the writing was definitely when se gye was reacting as i would to supernatural phenomenons. like, he speaks to his therapist friend about seo ri when he's concerned. at one point, they speak about their memories together, and he's like "should we check in with a doctor just in case we're both crazy." i loooove that.

also i love that the ending is not a wedding and children. their version of a happy ending is:

getting revenge on mun do by putting on a show for the press etc. seo ri delivers a scathing speech to him as he's in prison.

she has a career and her independence, he remains the same jealous idiot in love and is trying to convince her to move in together. she hasn't suddenly changed tastes to luxury and still has the rooftop apartment.

they're planning out a simple future together. it's just like, spending every season together. and it really fits, as they've both been through soooo much. they know what matters.

this is definitely fiction and definitely fantasy but it still feels grounded somehow. i don't feel like i'm being sold a chaebol lifestyle. and the "villain" has a surprising piece of humanity as a father and idk. that can happen. someone could murder and manipulate and still want the best for their child.

ps: heo nam jun has a twin??? and the way he describes their dynamic feels so real.

When Yoo Jae Suk mentioned, "I heard your twin brother is tall and handsome," Heo Nam Jun bluntly said, "By my standards, he's not handsome."

But! Grandpa was so much worse! He said to Mun do that he was evil from childhood on?? Excuse me, Sir!? Children are not bad! They learn from the set examples they experience. They try to survive. It's the adults responsibility to take care and to guide. 🤬☠️💥

My royal nemesis side note:

The time line is so messed up (and I don't talk about the time traveling): Seo ri gets up and has breakfast, the soup with Grandpa when the truck hits - and is brought to the hospital when it's dark outside... Seo ri says: "it's not too cold in my flat, it's springtime"! And the next moment the radio voice says "it's Christmas!"...?!.. I'm sure we see green trees and even cherry blossoms during the show - but the comet is only supposed to be there for 2 months?!

(Not important to the plot... But it confuses me).

Watching true beauty (while I'm waiting for the next episodes of my ongoing show...) and it's so unexpectedly good!!! Cute and funny and produced so well and heartwarming! It's a teenager story but it's intense and to the point where depth is required and has some quirky humor where teenage antics would get too silly otherwise. (Only at episode 03 now so we'll see...).

(the way su ho arranges all sorts of things to spend time with ju kyung but then she always just delivers the stuff he asked for and runs away... So adorable)
