Our Beloved Summer Summary & Review: 7/10
These kind of dramas are not exactly my cup of tea unless done well. On first impression i found the drama boring especially within the 1st half. It was the typical classmates who had a love-hate relationship, they broke up and was considered a famous couple because their story was filmed on a documentary before and now the viewers want them back.
Things didnt go as smoothly as expected for them. There were lots of instances where the female lead was really clingy but obviously has emotional trauma. Same goes for the male lead, he had abandonment trauma due to his father which made him feel empty & lonely. His situation reflects his drawings and a reason for him not to do draw people because they always change.
Though it seems that they’re close to breaking up for the 2nd time because of the female lead’s insecurities and the male lead’s intentions of going abroad to study. I viewed them as a weak couple, but after the female lead’s decision of not joining him the male lead respected her decision which is good and they both communicated as a long distance relationship couple.
There were alot of things i didnt like and like about Yeonsu and Ung. But since both finally opened up to each other and properly communicated things were for the better in the end. Ung is a dormat, hardheaded and lazy. While she is a pusher annoying rude. Her emotional trauma was in the way that lead her breakup 1st time and didnt want the same thing. She tried to change for him but he told her not too. Despite the fact she was pushing him to try things he didnt want but then he had the initiative to pursue his education abroad. Then later on Yeonsu was slightly growing up. Ung was just more mature despite acting childish.
The male lead also had to deal with being an adopted son. The mother has figured that he was struggling but with her reassurance everything worked out.
At the start, this couple never had proper communication and its a important trait in every relationship so im happy that they let everything out and both are content with life. They also lived happily too.
Then the 2nd male lead. A very troubled young man who has been neglected by his estranged alcoholic mother. The boy was completely numb from his pain and what is terrible even more, the mother is dying & she wants him to document her. If i was him i would ignore her right there. But he was a good person who was willing to give his mother a second chance and he eventually became the subject of the camera, instead of being behind the camera.
The 2nd female lead had her struggles and dealing with the media because of her job as an idol. She could relate to the drawings of the male lead and that’s how they became close. She finally had enough and actually released a documentary without her company’s permission. It seems to me people judged her character too much.
The acting were good enough between Choi Wooshik, Kim Dami, Kim Sungchul. They portrayed their characters really well, though unfortunately i did not enjoy the chemistry of Wooshik & Dami as much. I honestly enjoyed Wooshik & Roh Jeungeui’s alot more.
Overall there was a sense of message for the youth which was a nice way to wrap everything up. Life is not to be regretted. It takes time to grow up, leave the bad things that happened in the past behind, start a new & live your life the best you can.
