Zao Wou-Ki was a Chinese-French painter renowned for works of abstraction. Frequently painting in diptychs and triptychs, his painting style was an amalgamation of the global influences he garnered from a boyhood in China, proximity to the New York pop art scene, and professional artistic exposure in France. Zao applied modernist and impressionist techniques to traditional Chinese landscape painting. Though Zao spent a period of his life estranged from his Chinese heritage and avoided Chinese-influenced ink painting during his career, preferring to work with oil paints, his luminous, fluid works of abstraction bear effects of customary Chinese art.
This particular piece, marked by contrasting colors and lyrical abstraction, is demonstrative of the fusion of European abstraction and Chinese landscape styles.
