Synopsis:
When a new student destroys a desk during back-to-school-night, high school teacher and avid avoidant Renee Dupont finds out that several players on the local Junior hockey team are afflicted with lycanthropy. (Not werewolves, because werewolves don't exist. Renee has the scars to prove it.) It's okay, though, because Renee is happy to stay out of it. She hasn't gotten on the ice in a decade, and she knows better than to get involved.
Except the new student has some issues of her own, and Renee has never turned away a student in need. Especially ones with some hauntingly familiar mannerisms. Ones who eats like a gym rat during bulking season but flinches at any offer of candy. One who pulls moves on the ice that are risky and borderline illegal in a way that Renee has had nightmares about. Coach Wakefield is in over her head, and they both know it.
Renee swore she would never get on the ice again, but she also swore that she would protect her students. She can give up on this one student and keep her own nose clean, keep living her uneventful life, just one more thing to haunt her. Or she can face her past and all of its perils, but do for someone else what she could never do for herself.
Something will have to give eventually. And no matter which way she falls, nothing will ever be the same again.
Characters (left to right):
Renee Dupont: Third year high school English teacher. 23. Has a psychiatrict service dog named Muenster who is trained to respond to commands in French and sign language. Renee once said Muenster is smarter than half of the parents she has to deal with, and she might be right.
Maggie Wakefield: Coach of the Frankport Jackalopes, a Tier I junior hockey team that has been struggling to overcome a string of lost championships. 26. Lost her leg in an "accident" during a exhibition match in college, ending what was shaping up to be a very promising hockey career before it could begin. Has unknowing connections to Renee's past.
Tatyana Borislavova: Newest player for the Jackalopes with more issues than you could shake a stick at. 17. Is uncomfortably deferential to Maggie, but quickly grows more comfortable with Renee.
Isaac Yates: The only official underage member of Maggie's pack. 17. Was in Renee's class last year, and is the only one who is immediately onboard with getting her involved.
Tess: The adopted daughter of Maggie's hermit-like neighbor. 16 Is a reserve on the team, although Maggie won't play her without her adopted father's permission, so she acts as more of a equipment manager's assistant. Maggie has her participate in practices, though, and Tatyana has taken something of an interest in her.
