Meditations upon the Elgarlin [Velanna & Merrill]
It was good to see that Velanna was taking the education so seriously and that she was so eager to try the next portion of the new magic that had taken Merrill literally months to discover on her own with the old passages of her books. She always knew that with a good teacher you could definitely learn things faster. So, when Velanna’s markings started to glow lightly, she was impressed even though that light quickly faded.
“It looks like you made the connection and then lost concentration, or perhaps you weren’t sure about one link in your mind. Just know and be certain about your heritage. You’ll feel it inside you. Your blood will almost feel alive, your vision will redden, and your markings will tingle almost to the point of itching. Then, you should be able to use your magic without the use of lyrium.”
For a first attempt, Velanna had done very well, but to truly learn to manipulate the magic was inevitably going to take time and practice as most magic did. “I’m not expecting much, but you will get better. The fact that I saw your markings turn color was amazing for a first go. Try again, but don’t be disappointed if you can’t actually do anything yet. It took me months.” An encouraging smile was plastered on her lips as she urged her to try again, or keep trying as the case might be.
“If you need a break, there are more berries and tea to replenish your energy as well.” She blurted out as an afterthought even though they had just taken a short break an hour or so before.
Velanna sighed in slight frustration. The fact that her friend had been impressed with her didn't help that. She was used to being an incredibly quick study. Anytime she couldn't have something practically mastered after the first attempt she found herself feeling frustrated. She didn't want to seem ungrateful to her friend however, so she took a deep breath and smiled.
"I will give it another try, lethallan." she said, dipping her head at Merrill. Taking another deep breath, Velanna closed her eyes and once again tried to focus on her heritage. She went through the history of the clan she had been raised in, taking extra time to ensure that she had all of the details correct. It took a few moments, but finally, she thought she had gotten it right.
Sure enough, her markings began to tingle, just as Merrill had said they would. She scrunched her nose slightly at the sensation but made sure to maintain her focus. Slowly she opened her eyes and turned them upon the other elf.
"I think I may be doing it, lethallan." she whispered softly. A small smile crossed her lips.
Holding the mental chain together was far more taxing than Velanna had thought it would be. It wasn't more than a minute before she had to let it go. She slumped slightly as the magic fled and she gave her companion a soft grin.
"I think I may need to take you up on that offer for a break, lethallan. Such magic requires more energy than I thought it would."
