Kaz Brekker. That’s it. Reblog if you agree.
Kaz dropping some pearls of wisdom.
I thought I should draw all the crows from Shadow and Bone, so here is my Kaz Brekker and there is more to come

I was rereading ACOTAR, the first book that is, and I realized again why I love the series so much.
You don’t see the problems with Tamlin coming. The first book he is shown to be a good character. maybe not perfect, but someone who you can trust to mean well and be on the right side. Yes, there are hints of potential controlling or of him misunderstanding who Feyre is and what she needs, but they’re easily glossed over. Some people may use this to point his development in the next book as ‘inconsistent’, but really this is a perfect representation of the problem with abusive relationships - it is hard to tell when someone is likely to hurt you in that way as they always seem almost perfect when the relationship is new.
To me, this is one on the many ways that this series is so so relevant to real life in a way many others aren’t. It tells you to not just look for someone who is willing to love you, to not just look for someone who seems ‘perfect’ and will sweep you off your feet. You should be looking for someone who will always, no matter their mistakes or the pressures of life, be willing to hear and account for what you want, who will let you still be yourself and not just one half of a whole.

Surviving a Desert
Only move at dusk and dawn.
Cover yourself. The sun is an old and angry thing.
Try not to leave tracks.
Not all that is visible is real.
Not all that is real is visible.
When you start hearing the voices of the dead, settle down and do not move. They will pass you by.
Do not approach caravans.
Dreams had in the desert are either prophetic or real. Decide wisely which to believe.
There are no wolves here. You will hear them anyway.
Never rest in the bottom of a dune valley.
Do not speak to anything that has not proven itself to be human.
When the sand shakes, run.
Cover your mouth. The sand will coat your lungs.
Seeing things in the day is not a problem. Seeing things at night should be.
Never play the flute.
Always carry a sack of sugar for hungry things.
You are meat. Do not forget this fact.
If there is something in your periphery, do not look at it. It wants you to.
Dig yourself into the ground in a sandstorm. The wind will take you away.
The flames are not real.
The shadows are not real.
Never close your tent flap all the way. It is impolite.
Never let your lantern go out.
The ancient have no love for the young.
Do not drink water offered to you.
Do not watch the dancers. They will trick you.
There should be no clouds. If there are, move until they disappear.
Travel alone. You will invariably lose your companions.
Someone will cry out for help. Do not follow the voice.
The murmurs of veiled ones are to be disregarded.

yall ever just think “fuck it, only god can help me now” and just go tf to sleep even though you have an exam the next morning
i just read a washington post article on romcoms aging poorly due to the pushiness (and oft-stalkery conduct) of the male characters therein, and it got me thinking about pride and prejudice, and specifically darcy saying, “one word from you will silence me on this subject forever.”
because, like, that’s the seldom-portrayed romantic dream in the patriarchal hellscape that is our world, isn’t it?
a dude being willing to say, “i understand if you don’t feel the same way about me, and i’ll leave you alone forever about this if my attention is unwanted.”
so simple, yet so wonderful in its basic human decency
and dudes to this day wonder why women still swoon over darcy
Note also: Elizabeth turns down Darcy’s first proposal, and in the process, accuses him of doing some stuff he did not do (and also some stuff he totally did).
The next day, he surprises her on her walk. He hands her a letter, asks that she read it, and then takes off.
When this happened to me after I had turned someone down IN REAL LIFE, the letter contained a passionate argument to the tune of “actually you’re wrong and you do like me and you should go out with me” and it was creepy af.
Darcy’s letter to Elizabeth starts with: “Be not alarmed, Madam, on receiving this letter, by the apprehension of its containing any repetition of those sentiments, or renewal of those offers, which were last night so disgusting to you”. He goes on to set the record straight about the stuff he didn’t do (as well as the stuff he did) which is *actually relevant* to Elizabeth. And he, as promised, doesn’t romance her further.
It’s totally bizarre that even now, this can be considered unusually great dude behaviour.
Darcy’s first proposal: “You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”
Darcy’s second proposal: “One word from you will silence me on this subject forever.”
His whole arc in the book is about learning to consider other people’s feelings and not just his own, but the fact that it’s expressed via who gets to talk and who is told to shut up is so, so telling. The first time around, he imposes his voice on her whether she wants it or not. The second time, he asks how she feels, and in exchange, offers her the gift of his silence.
And yeah, the fact that dudes still! have! not! learned! this! lesson! is exhausting.
How surprising is it that Pride and Prejudice was written by a woman, when many romantic comedies are produced and directed by men?
Answer: not at all
Darcy is husband goals though, honestly.
I adore this. But there is so much more to his proposals as well.
If you look at his proposals as a whole.
In the first he really is an ass. He starts the proposal by telling her how unworthy she is due to her family's social standing. He goes on to say that his growing feelings for her are a source of pain for him.
"In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.''
He follows up by daying that he goes against the wishes of his family, his friends and even his own better judgement. That any connection between them is "highly reprehensible" but that it cannot be helped.
His words contradict his claim of "ardently admiring" her.
When he actually proposes he states how he has experienced a growing regard for her which "despite my stuggles has overcome any rational objection" which he follows with " i beg you most fervently to relieve my suffering and consent to be my wife"
When she accuses him of separating Jane and Bingley he admits to doing so and says that "to Bingley i have been kinder than to myself", again showing how he views this match as unfavourable to him.
His second proposal is vastly different.
It follows when she thanks him for helping Lydia.
Here he expresses "if you thank me let it be for yourself alone...Your family owes me nothing. Much as i respect them, i thought of you alone."
He shows that he has come to respect Lizzy's family, even though he only thought of her when he helped.
Thee proposal that follows also shows how he changes.
He starts by saying that " you are too generous to trifle with me" and that "if your feelings are unchanged...one word will silence me forever on this subject"
In the book Mr Darcy mentions of Lizzy's encounter with his aunt the following: "It taught me to hope," said he, "as I had scarcely ever allowed myself to hope before. I knew enough of your disposition to be certain that, had you been absolutely, irrevocably decided against me, you would have acknowledged it to Lady Catherine, frankly and openly."
Here we see what pushed him to propose to ber again. Knowing her habit of speaking frankly what she felt, he took her words to his aunt to mean that her feelings may have changed and thus he took a chance while still respecting her opinion and also preparing to be rejected once more.
What i particularly love is the way in which the P+P&Z movie adaptation handled his proposal.
Herein Darcy says "you are the love of my life. So i ask you now, half in anguish half in hope. Will you do me the great honor of taking me for your husband."
In that i find the greatest joy.
His first proposal stresses his pain at asking her to be his.
In his second we find him stressing his fear of being rejected again alongside his hope of being happy. And in asking he here reverses the power dynamics by offering himself for her taking instead of claiming her for his taking.
P.S. sorry for the essay. I just really love this story
“I never realized what a big deal that was. How amazing it is to find someone who wants to hear about all the things that go on in your head.”
