New Year’s Eve is a night I never enjoy. I can’t take goodbyes. This year began with distance, consisted of 5 months of feeling disconnected from my body with pain and sensations of discomfort , aggravation and concern. I had the lowest low in February when I found myself wading through the snow, drinking my body weight in water in Starbucks before trapsimg into the waiting room and collapsing in a chair, convinced I was dying I took a urine test which I then spilt over my visa and almost passport. A piss soaked visa pretty much summed up the first part of 2020. X-rays and more antibiotics and more hospital visits and blood tests and crying to my parents over FaceTime. Then a stroke of luck would have it I left Canada a few days before I Would have been made to. A missed romantic weekend in Granada. A sneaky week in France. Lots of watering plants and turning over soil. Window sills lined with tomatoes. A thousand walks in the forest and finding new parts of this county whilst wishing to be elsewhere. Within a hair’s worth of that citizenship, so close I can feel it in my body. Dreaming of warmer climates. Beginning 2021 with purpose, Spanish, art, stretching, writing....WRITING.

Perfume began in Mesopotamia as incense offered to the gods to sweeten the smell of animal flesh burned as offerings, and it was used in exorcisms, to heal the sick, and after sexual intercourse. The word’s Latin etymology tells us how it worked: per = through + fumar to smoke. Tossed onto a fire, incense would fill the sky with a smoke otherworldly and magical, which stung the nostrils as if clamorous spirits were clawing their way into the body. Perfumed smoke began with the things of this earth but climbed quickly into the realm of the gods. Atop the famous ziggurat-shaped Tower of Babel, which stretched closer to the gods than mortals could reach, priests lit pyres of incense.
