I know this blog has been kind of dead but I did find a little treat for those of you still following, an early version of When The Words Wonât Come:
The season will also include Sarah DeLappeâs ensemble drama The Wolves, as well as Ngozi Anyanwuâs Good Grief.
The Pittsburg Playhouse will be showcasing Pump Up The Volume from April 3rd to April 12th in 2020
More Early Songs ?
I managed to dig up an entirely different playlist on Jordon Mannâs youtube... In addition to the 3 songs he had posted, there are 5 more listed on private...
Will we ever see these again? who knows.
Update 2/20/2019
Figured Iâd give you guys another update. So, since I now have a script to work off of, I will be adding a permanent link to it on the sidebar... I will also be updating the pages to fill them with new information found in the script itself (mainly the changes and song lists).
Iâve also decided that, given evidence at this point, the Canadian production was a completely unrelated project... However, I will be keeping it listed on the pages as a possible side mystery to solve.Â
I will also be altering the transcriptions pages slightly... âMain Transcriptionsâ will now be changed to say âRecording Transcriptionsâ and will include all the youtube rips... And âOther Transcriptionsâ will be changed to say âRevised Script Lyricsâ and include full posts from the script (dated as a 2016 revision). Though, currently this is at the bottom of my list so donât expect to see it right away.
I FOUND THE FUCKING SCRIPT OH MY GOD HOLY SHIT WHAT THE HELL I DID NOT MEAN TO DO THIS ON PURPOSE BUT IT HAPPENED SORRY FOR ALL THE PROFANITY BUT OH MY FUCKING GOD,
The âWhat We Now Knowâ Update
Alright so Iâve been working on updating the pages on this blog but I decided to also give you guys a rundown post on all the information Iâve accumulated about the musical so far as it will be somewhat easier for me to keep track of everything.
Regarding Productions:
The Currently Confirmed productions of Desmon/Thomsonâs Pump Up The Volume happened in New York, Cincinnati, and Seattle.
Another production is known to have happened at a Montreal, Canada high school... BUT it is unknown if this is the same musical or an unrelated production.
Regarding Songs:
A 9 song playlist of live song performances has been found, however 6 of the songs are private videos and cannot be retrieved. The other three were already located previously.
Waiting In The Night received some lyrical changes sometime during or after the Seattle production. It is unknown if it is alone in this.
A song called âDonât Let Me Be Misunderstoodâ was found in reviews for the Montreal production... Again it is unknown if this production is unrelated or not.
Regarding Characters:
Marla Hunter appears to have been included in the plot during earlier productions, but as of now has been written out.Â
Some Clarity on the Malcolm/Chris situation has been found: They are indeed SEPARATE characters, however it appears they are meant to be performed by the same actor.
Additionally, Chris is noted to be named fully as âChristianâ, likely meant as a nod to Mr. Slater.
Brian Hunter is a police lieutenant instead of a school commissioner.
An additional character named âRickyâ has been added to the cast, likely meant to be an amalgam of other characters from the film.
Iâll be looking for more info tonight so stay tuned for future updates.

Found this a while ago but waited to make any post on it cause i was tired.
Looks to be a high school performance of the musical... That or an entirely unrelated musical version... It is hard to say given that the composers are unlisted. However, some of the info found here DOES match up to earlier versions of the Desmon/Mann/Thomson version(Such as Mark's mother is still present in the plot).
Other information found:
Murdock, Deaver, and Emerson are mentioned as being characters in the story.
A Song sung by Creswood called "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" was mentioned.
Given that the musical appeara to have been preformed before the Cincinnati Production, i see it reasonable to believe that (if they ARE indeed the same musical) these productions were super similar to each other in content. However, its still hard to say.
DREW BOWEN (Mark/âHard Harryâ) is a musical theatre major at Wright State from Cincinatti, OH who was previously seen in the Festival Pl
Official Website for the Cincinnati Production. Some notes on pages:
Malcolm and Chris are played by the same actor, unknown if this is the standard or just a result of limited cast but if the former it does confirm suspicions that they are separate characters with one actor and not one single character.
Mr. Hunter is listed as "Lt. Hunter" and by looking into the story section we see he has been changed from a district superintendent to a police lieutenant investigating the Hard Harry case.
Character named Ricky is listed in cast, possibly a combination of the characters Joey (Seth Green) and Donald(Kid selling tapes) from the film but uncertain. I will say I believe this to be Character A in "Speak To Me", though I still believe they are is Malcom or Chris in "Waiting in the Night".
No mentions of the Characters Ms. Emerson, Mr. Deaver, or Mr. Murdock. While the latter 2 could just be ensemble roles Emerson was a pretty major part of the film so her absence is peculiar. Though, it's possible that the roles listed are only major cast and other characters are considered supporting. This would also mean that Stacie and Tracie could now be considered major cast if this is the case since they are on this list.

My arms hurt from writing this out
Cincinnati, OH Production
Yo so I stumbled on this by complete accident but I found another possible production of PUTV that played sometime ago?
https://behindthecurtaincincy.com/2011/07/06/pump-up-the-volume-runs-aug-4-6/
Evidently, it ran during early August of 2011.
The website only so far gives me that much and a rough summary of the plot.
If anybody has any more info on this, feel free to share.Â
9 videos on this Youtube playlist I just found.... 5 of them are private. the 3 public ones are âYou Are The Voiceâ; âAll For The Childrenâ; And âKeep The Air Aliveâ
The privated videos are likely just the other 5 are just the remaining known songs... And Yet, I ponder... Could at least one of them be an unknown song? Or maybe âWhen Harry Comes On?â
We may never know....

(Note: I will not be using a regular scripted format, as there is only one vocalist. I will, however, bold any lyrics that are different from the final version of this song, Waiting In The Night. I will also be doing a follow up post that goes more in-depth and analytical about the changes.)

Another good find was made!!!
Firstly, I managed to dig up some press photos from the Joeâs Pub performance from two different sources:
Playbill Photos
Broadway.com Photos
Secondly: I looked into a video containing a performance honoring Desmon and Thomsonâs work together... and one of the songs they preformed was Waiting In The Night... Though, these arenât the normal lyrics.
Time Stamp is 3:46
(Video will not work if you have ad-block turned on. I have tried.)
The new Lyrics go as follows:
And quietly the emptiness Becomes the only way. And quietly we loose the will To fight another day.
And thereâs nothing left to say (And thereâs nothing left to say...) After this it just goes on to the chorus... I have two theories about these lyrics
This was a change to one of the already recorded verses. Small changes like this happen all the time in Theatre, itâs not unlikely that they updated it. Especially considering this video happened AFTER the Seattle version supposedly was being worked on. Iâve mentioned before that Waiting in the Night is a bit weird, as it seems to combine both Malcolm and Chrisâs calls into a single moment... But this version sounds more hopeless than the recorded version, which makes me think that maybe they were trying to lean it more towards the song being Malcolm-centric.
This is possibly a fragment to a previously unheard reprise. While less likely, itâs still not something Iâm going to rule out as being a possibility.
There is also a performance of When The Words Wonât Come (Time Stamp 9:05), though from the clip given it doesnât seem like there were any changes to it... Iâm hoping that I might be able to uncover a possible full version of these performances sometime in the future... If they exist.

BIG FOUND MADE LAST NIGHT!!!
Alright we got a lot to get through so Iâll state the shortest first: I dug up the New York closed performance cast list from Playbill!!
http://www.playbill.com/article/workshop-of-pump-up-the-volume-musical-to-feature-alex-brightman-emma-hunton-molly-ranson-john-dossett-liz-larsen-com-207402
Iâm uncertain if the New York or Seattle readings are the oneâs currently recorded on Thomsonâs Soundcloud and Desmonâs website, But Iâll likely do vocal comparisons sometime in the near future.Â
I was stumbling around when I found this video posted in 2009 by composer Jordan Mann on his official YouTube page:
According to the description, this was a DEMO recorded sometime in 2006 to convince New Line Cinema to give the production crew the rights to a musical version of Pump Up The Volume.
Listening to it, and even just looking at the title, itâs very clear that âQuiet Desperationâ evolved into âWaiting in the Nightâ. Furthermore this proves two things I previously had speculated: 1) This is probably the earliest written song. 2) There was a different composer involved at one point (in this case, Mann)Â
Not only this, but there are two Other songs as well in a playlist labeled âPump Up The Volumeâ...Â
The other songs are âAnd You Learnâ; Which judging by the lyrics is about Markâs Parents(or at least his Father and a female character, as Markâs Mom was evidently scrapped out of the story as told by âWhen The Words Wonât Comeâ ... Though, for reasons Iâll state later, this decision likely hadnât been made yet and included both parents.)
and âOne Black Crayonâ; Which Iâm guessing is supposed to be about Nora as sheâs seen using crayons briefly in the film.
Iâm guessing that sometime between 2006-2010 Thomson was working on the musical with Mann... But Mann later left the project and Desmon replaced him. âQuiet Desperationâ Survived and eventually morphed into âWaiting In The Nightâ, but but it leaves these other two songs in an uncertain state. While itâs more likely they were scrapped out entirely, the fact that WITN exists leads me to wonder if they possibly were salvaged and either utilized in other songs or evolved into something else...
I also found a link to what appears to be a Jointed website for Thomson and Mann, but itâs in a Japanese dialect... Luckily, google is able to auto translate the pages but for the time being Iâm gonna put looking through it on the back burner as Iâve got a lot of work ahead of me already... Though, itâs high on my sourcing list.

With That Said:
Iâll be making a lyrical comparison of QD and WITN since they have some pretty big differences and I actually think they explain a LOT... Though, I wonât be doing this until Iâve transcribed both WITN and WTWWC. Iâll also probably type out full lyrical transcriptions for AYL and OBC, but Not anytime soon... again I want to get the confirmed songs out of the way first and foremost. Iâll also be making updates to the Song Page sometime this week (hopefully).
