I don’t think it’s much of a stretch to say that most teenagers in the Danganronpa universe suffer from some pretty intense self confidence issues. In a world where talent is isn’t something you’re just perceived to have by the masses but something you’re actively rewarded for in a way that basically guarantees your success in life, the very definition of what it means to have ‘talent’ is probably a lot more specific.
That means that even for people who are genuinely talented, if they aren’t the absolute pinnacle nobody will really bat an eye, because for all your skill you aren’t a SHSL, so who really cares? This reigns true for Naegi as well, in fact, it’s a lot worse for Naegi. He often refers to himself as ‘average’ or ‘just a noraml guy’ and he genuinely believes that. Of course he believes that, he’s not nearly as talented as the SHSL.
“But Chris” I hear you ask “Why does it matter if he’s not like the SHSL? it’s not like they really affected him until recently” and to that I direct you to Maizono. Even though she wasn’t exactly a SHSL at the time, he was in the direct presence of somebody who was qualified to be one, so he was already in the vast vast vast minority of people who actually went to school with one. Made worse by the fact that this wasn’t just a girl he knew, this was a girl he was in love with. Unconditionally with the bare minimum knowledge of her, which inherently forced him to compare himself to her and seriously consider the difference in their social standing as well as their inherent ‘talent’, which led him to the conclusion ‘she doesn’t know I exist’ and ‘theres no way she would remember an average guy like me’. Inherently, the SHSL system even without it being immedietly present, affected the way Naegi viewed himself and his peers, and made him doubt himself inherently.
That’s not to say he didn’t deal with it in a healthy way, because he did. He’s an optimist through and through and made the best of it. That didn’t change the reality though. However thankfully he was surrounded by other average people, so it never really weighed on him to heavily.
Sucks that he then won a raffle and suddenly he was surrounded on all sides by people he thought were inherently better than him though huh? Joining Hopes Peak was a major stroke of good luck, obviously but it had its downsides. It had a lot of downsides. The first one being that Naegi is not lucky. Not in the way people would probably expect, he just has strokes of good luck that are so extreme they outweigh his bad luck sometimes. That’s all. He doesn’t view that as a talent, so the first problem is that he’s in a school for the talented and the gifted when he doesn’t consider himself talented or gifted. The second is that his perceived lack of talent is no longer the ‘norm’ for him. He lives at the Hopes Peak dorms, and hes surrounded by the most talented people in the world. He’s no longer just an average normal guy. In this environment? He’s the weird one. It’s not normal for somebody to be average here, he’s strange for being normal.
Which all culminates in the idea that he doesn’t really deserve to be at Hopes Peak. It’s not something he earned and its certainly not something thats justified. Which often causes Naegi to overwork himself in a desperate effort to prove he has any right at all to even be at Hopes Peak. Its not so bad that it causes major health issues, but for those with keen eyes?
It’ll be hard to miss.

He wasn’t really expecting anything to happen. Honestly he’d only really been driven to mention that he’d kiss out of a jealous irritation more than anything. Being surrounded by the most talented people in the world when you were just so definitively average would obviously do a number on somebodies self confidence and he was no exception. He’d just resigned himself to the idea that any romantic attraction or anything similar he might feel weren’t worth pursuing. Seeing everybody else just blank the possibility for vague reasons just irked him.
So, how the hell THAT had led to him quickly getting his first kiss swooped out from under him in the blink of the eye was kind of surreal. It was...quicker than he had expected. A lot less romantic than he would have wanted. To late to turn back though. It was odd, really. The fact it had happened so suddenly made it a lot easier for him to really proceed as usual.
“U-Um...w-well, thank you, Togami-kun-” Easier was an optimistic term, he was still fairly awkward. “S-sorry. I’ve never really...kissed anybody, before. I don’t know what’s meant to happen now”

I dunno to be honest? I like to think I’m pretty optimistic with a sunny disposition I guess but I’m more of a realist who focuses on the optimal outcome than the negative? And my sunny dispoition comes off less as “baby boy, baby” than it does “fearl gremlin” even though im literally six feet tall. So I guess maybe I’m a lot like Naegi if he looked in a fun house mirror?
⚪ - What drew you so much to your muse?
Honestly he was just the only character from Danganronpa I could remember vividly enough to write when my friend told me to make a Danganronpa blog years ago. I’d love to tell you I had some grand plan or just really really felt his muse or something but no, he was quite literally just the only one I had a clear image of in my head. If you go back to my first Naegi blog (which you wont) from like 4 years ago you can kind of tell a lot of what Naegi did and felt was kinda just me winging it. That kinda worked out in the end though because I feel like he’s the muse I’ve written the longest without making drastic changes to. Before writting Naegi I had written four other muses, now I only write two of those four ( @tagiisms // @prodigall ) and they’ve both changed completely from how I originally portrayed them. So I guess in a weird way it was like, sixth sense? like “this is the kind of character I can write really really well and I know it”, because I have a lot of confidence in my portrayal of Naegi, I always have, and I mean sure i have a lot of confidence in my portrayal of my other muses, in particular Ezreal, but I never had to go through a workshop and totally overhaul him entirely to get there.
🔴 - Do you have a dream AU you haven’t written in yet?
It’s not even really an AU but I just kinda want post graduate Naegi, or home-life Naegi. Or just any potential scenarios that were already posed in game as a possibility (not you DR3, Headmaster Naegi can die on the spot thank you very much), but I guess I had like, a vague idea of Junko basically haunting Naegi? like, shes just sort of around but shes a ghost and shes harmless and shes really more of a pest than anything and it ends up being more of a buddy cop show. That sounds like fun.
🟤 Brown - What is a headcannon you are particularly proud of?
I’m particularly proud of my headcanons on Maizono and Naegi’s survivors guilt. The first one because I put so much work into it and referenced canon in way more explicit specific detail than I normally do. In general I think I did a really good job with that one. His survivors guilt I still need to rewrite on this blog but I’m not proud of that one for anything specific so much as it being confirmed way after I wrote it. I was writing Naegi with survivors guilt before DR3 came out and it was during a period where most people just dismissed the possibility that Naegi might not be as blatantly happy or content as he portrayed himself, so the idea that Naegi might actually be pretty depressed and hiding a lot of his own trauma and insecurities was a hot take at the time, and then there was a whole scene dedicated to it in the anime and I felt super validated.

Loads, but I guess the most notable ones are Pokemon and Yugioh
It wasn’t like him to be so overcome with desire. That wasn’t to say he didn’t feel things like lust. Not at all, it was common in fact, overwhelmingly so. He was just a normal teenager after all, and at this, the most hormonal time in his life, it was natural that he would feel a bit...overcome now and again right? Honestly he thought he did a pretty good job of containing himself.
It was now though, on a sunday evening (why was it always Sunday), that he found himself alone in his room with Maizono. It wasn’t uncommon, actually it was slowly becoming the norm. Every now and again she’d sneak in to his dorm room in the night, usually just to share each others company. She could never be to careful with what she made explicitly clear to the public after all, and even though their relationship was far from a secret to their immediate inner circle, it could never go further than that.
Which also meant if he ever felt pent up, in any respect not just sexual, he’d have hours to wait before he could finally act on those desires. Today, in a display that was painfully normal for her, Junko had gone around, flaunting her bosom in an effective effort to fluster or tease the general student body for her own amusement. Naegi, of course, being a class with her had grown almost immune to her actions, but there was one thing that he couldn’t become immune to.
Daydreaming.
And as he daydreamed away, watching Junko have her fun, he turns to Maizono, and suddenly finds himself humoring the thoughts of her doing something like that. Not publicly, of course, he didn’t like to think of himself as to overly controlling but what was for his eyes only was for his eyes only.
And he found himself lingering on those thoughts. All day, for hours.
So when he took his chance to indulge in his affections for her upon her arrival, it was plain to see he was acting differently. What were usually soft, caring movements, brimming with uncertainty and delicacy, were overshadowed by what could only be described as raw desire. His body pressed against hers with more force even he was used to displaying, crashing his lips against hers in desperation rather than greeting, his hands drifting to her hips and pulling her forward, more in an effort to feel her against him than anything else.
He was far from rough with her, despite the fact he was acting very out of character in response to the unprecedented level of arousal he’d been sitting on all day he really didn’t have it in him to be anything but gentle, but it was the moment he realized that he was kind of pushing that as far as it could go that he finally pulled away, very red in the face.
“I-I...Uh...s-sorry! I-it’s...it’s been a long day!”
