The ball moss clumps eventually fall to the ground where, in undisturbed areas, they decompose and release their nitrogen into the soil, thereby fertilizing it. We obtain ours from built-up areas, where it is removed from the trees by some who (wrongly) deem it harmful to them. Those that fall to the ground naturally in urban and suburban areas, get scooped up as garbage, eventually to make their way to landfill sites.
