“ Yana said Sebastian sees humans like/as* grasshoppers.” Yeah but how does Sebastian view grasshoppers? (Or anything?) There are people repulsed by grasshoppers. Those who are fearful.
Those who are violent towards them, viewing grasshoppers as nothing but pests and even desiring for them to not at all exist.
People who are enthusiasts and even researchers and caretakers.
Those who are just mildly to somewhat intrigued by them.
There are plenty who don’t care about or for grasshoppers at all.
Hell (heh), who and what does Sebastian define as human?
Are the supernatural, divine, occult, and otherwise really incapable of dehumanization and human exceptionalism?
To begin with why are we only working with human definition and assumption?
You can't just say stuff Yana that shouldn't be how speaking works. "Sebastian was never human." According to who. Sebastian? Yourself? Funny, you draw yourself a devil and yet you act as if God.
sebastian is such a fascinating character because the same things that limit humans (money, class, even physical weakness) limit him as well. he has likes, dislikes, interests, skills... he can smile and frown, he can get offended and he can feel flattered, he can feel uncomfortable and degraded, he can feel pity for others and disgust at cruelty, he can critique society and power structures. where do we draw the line at human and inhuman?
kuroshitsuji makes you think about what makes a human a human. morally, characters like the cultists, kelvin, the doctor characters etc... are far worse than sebastian. i always say this but calling early kuro/anime sebastian evil is like calling cujo evil. sebastian (as far as we know) has never had a contract this long, that means most of his contracts so far were more like "hunts" where he got the soul and left quickly. he never "cultivated" any soul until now and he's living like a person. ciel literally had to tell him to pretend to do things like a human, he said he's never had a friend, he's literally akin an "animal" being domesticated (something something dog/wolf imagery) and physically he's still "alive" and hasn't "died" before the way the other supernatural creatures in the story have.
what's the difference between animal and human? what's the difference between supernatural and human? if reapers and bizarre dolls used to be people but "demons" did not then why does sebastian bleed red? why does he like cats but not dogs? why does he take pleasure in "playing butler", picking flowers or choosing vases? why does experience such fascination at human technology? why does he grimace when he sees children suffering? why does he hold a dead his dead friend and mourn and compliment him? why does he mock the police for caring for the rich more than the poor? why does he want to live not just survive? animals survive but humans want to live - so no, sebastian does not see people as "grasshoppers" in the sense he doesn't care about them but as op said, there are people who put their whole lives into researching these little bugs. someone who is praised as being a hero by grasshoppers and is happy about it surely considers grasshoppers worthwhile.
if you truly want to understand sebastian's character, you shouldn't listen to yana or anyone involved in the creation of kuro, you shouldn't listen to me or anybody on tumblr or online at all. what you should do is pick up the manga and read from the first chapter all the way to now. and then you'll understand sebastian.
I love you all I hope you know that
beautiful minds
