kelber brainrot in the server so i was thinking about dirty work, and probably the clearest parallel between kepler and hilbert in the series, where kepler and minkowski's hallucination of hilbert are both reminded of the riddle of the orion. it's minkowski's subconscious acknowledging the situation and drawing parallels between how k &h would approach a sinking sub even before she reaches a conclusion for herself, which she does at the end of the episode

kepler and hilbert are both consistently shown to make choices, to own those choices and their consequences-- and they never make excuses or try to deflect accountability from them, and neither of them ruminate or dwell on their past decisions-- they look ahead, because they have a Vision, and all you can do about the past is learn from it. what they (and eventually minkowski) took from the riddle was 'you ALWAYS have a choice, and you make that choice and you deal with the consequences'

minkowski up to that point has largely REacted to emergencies as they cropped up, and she didn't understand why her hallucination of hilbert was trying to bring the riddle up to her when she was struggling with regret over the choices that she made, but i think minkowski synthesized the point of the riddle and arrived at the conclusion that hilbert and kepler did by the end of dirty work. that was where she finally Got It, and she went a step farther than either of them did because she chose to say 'no one dies today, actually'. minkowski's development into a figure of authoritative & trustworthy leadership from someone who uh, actively torments prisoners, was really well written, organic and thoughtful, and it was pushed forward by many other characters-- both allies and antagonists.

(imo lovelace had to get locked out in this episode because she already understood the point and would've made things too easy on minkowski, and also jacobi would be dead)

also i don't think we bully jacobi enough in this fandom, he sucks so much, and i say this with the utmost affection. cause the character who sends mixed messages, is emotionally volatile, is bigoted towards people he doesn't like, indulges in his anger and is needlessly violent is uh, jacobi. like, don't punch someone who's trying to answer the question you asked. wtf.

anyway the point i was making is that kepler has a unique and interesting dynamic with every single other character, and that unfortunately includes hilbert
