Product of the Memento Project in 3D class. I used super glue and wood to create a little box. The box is meant to represent a memory of mine; that memory is from a time when I was completely alone on the Ocean City, NJ board walk, at night, smoking a cigar, and in total peace with myself. It was the first time I really believed in myself and my dreams and was excited to live. I felt completely alive.

MANIA.

This photo series is meant to represent my own experience with consumerism in America, and the “Selfie Culture” we live in. I call this project “MANIA.”

All of the items used to create the sculpture surrounding me, represents my own experience as a consumer in America. There is an American Flag scarf around my head to show that I am an American, blinded by the blatant purchasing of unnecessary materials on a day to day basis. Items that are more important to me I placed on the table for example, the CDs. I have accumulated these CDs ever since childhood and they are very special to me. Music has always been my favorite aspect in life, and that is why they gained importance to be placed on a surface and not on the walls and floor. Clothing is spread across the floor because it is something unimportant that people, like myself, consume frequently. I was originally wearing only a money bra to represent how we are basically “wearing money,” but as the photos were taken, it eventually came off altogether and fell to the floor. In hindsight, this is symbolic to no longer giving in to, or being strapped down by money. As a consumer in this country it also, of course, comes with the opposite of working/making money. With my sculpture I also focused on the idea of doing a job that you fully love as opposed to working a dead end job that makes a person unhappy in their daily life. Most of my items chosen in this sculpture include things that have made me happy at some point, and therefore is a play on what I want to do with my life in order to be happy (Music, Art, etc).

Now, let’s talk about the pose I am doing, or in other words the “Selfie Pose.” Technology has come extremely far in the fact that now, most of us carry our own personal camera in our hand. I’ll be the first to admit that I am a member of the “Selfie Culture.” I do enjoy sharing pictures of myself, but I’ve done some thinking about it, and selfies shouldn’t be a way to just show off our features. It should be a way to send our message into the world. I want to use my voice, accompanied by my face, to spread my ideas and knowledge of the importance of positivity, philosophy, nature, peace, love, mental health awareness, body positivity and more. In the final photo I am holding a microphone to my mouth to represent how I will now use my voice instead of just my looks in order to make my mark on this world.

The section from the chapter Touch from the book A Natural History of the Senses by Diane Ackerman that I chose to focus on for this project was Animals. All animals have different forms of touch.

As stated by Ackerman, “Touch is a powerfully important sense among animals, for whom the slightest touch of an object or another animal triggers responses.”

For my project I wanted to show the difference in touch between two different animals. As you can see, when the dog is being touched he reciprocates the touches in a playful manner. In contrast the cat when touched has an opposite reaction and wishes to be gone from her owner. Cats and dogs have different reactions to touch as shown above and stated in the chapter Touch.

The section from the chapter Touch from the book A Natural History of the Senses by Diane Ackerman that I chose to focus on for this project was Hair. A woman’s hair is something that in society people think should look a certain way. Me taking out the bun hairstyle into the down hairstyle shows the motion women have to go through each day by having her hair up vs having her hair down. When my hair is up that is meant to symbolize oppression women have in society, and when down it is meant to symbolize freedom.

As Ackerman states in the chapter, “One’s hairstyle can be the badge of a group...”

This could mean many things, but for me it means a woman’s hairstyle has to look a certain way in society. Due to media women are supposed to look a certain way or else they are labeled as not good enough. Hair for women is a big part of their image and without it certain women feel naked. I personally keep my hair long, possibly because that's the way society wants it to be.

Overall this video is supposed to represent the back and forth pull women have in society, being torn between their freedom and their oppression.
