The next stop on our San Francisco coffee tour was Flywheel Coffee Roasters for some some nitro cold brewed coffee. I’m hopeful this will be the next big thing in coffee (forget the flat white!), but it’s still not that common. We chose this spot specifically to have the nitro cold brewed coffee, so it made ordering quite easy.
My notes on the atmosphere of this place were “perfect example of 3rd wave mom w/ stroller in yoga pants”. The decor was the ubiquitous combination of cement, wood, metal, and exposed brick. Not quite steam punk, but that pseudo modern retro aesthetic. (Which I do like, even though it’s a cliche.) Unlike Ritual earlier in the day, the atmosphere of Flywheel was staid. People on their laptops looking like they’re working. A few women in yoga pants with strollers all looking as dour as Gordon Brown. The people working there were very serious as well, focused on setting up their large vacuum brewing contraption behind the counter. I regret not taking pictures of it, but the whole place gave off a vibe that coffee tourism wasn't encouraged. I felt sheepish taking these few cruddy photos. It’s definitely a working cafe.
As for the coffee, it was good. Pretty thick and heady. Had a nice acidic kick at the end, but it wasn't overly frothy. It wasn't as mind blowing as the nitro cold brewed coffee I had at Timbertrain in Vancouver, but I would happily drink it again if I was in the area.
