honestly, per the skeleton, there’s very little to say about kennedy’s life. she’s woodstock through and through so her existence is honestly very cookie cutter. her parents were nice, and her siblings ( charlie & fiona ) were nice, and she didn’t have a ton of friends but the ones she had were nice like it’s a whole long list of fine

for whatever reason, kennedy’s never really been content with that. as a middle kid, she was overlooked a lot so she learned how to entertain herself and that was primarily through literature so it became this rory gilmore deal where she was reading such compelling and interesting stories about people in other places that she couldn’t help but want the same thing so she’s honestly been wanting out of woodstock since like. probably middle school

in her senior year of high school, her brother was diagnosed with cancer. he was in college in california playing football, but obviously after this he moves back home so they can seek treatment.

kennedy, who was accepted into her dream college in boston by some miracle ( average grades and extracurriculars that she definitely inflated to sound better on paper ), defers her enrollment by a year to stay home and be with her family

it is a brutal year-long battle, and, unfortunately, charlie doesn’t win. they bury him just after the holidays.

this is devastating to kennedy in a lot of ways, charlie was one of her best friends and one of the few people who knew how badly she wanted to get out of woodstock and has always been one of her biggest supporters. but, more selfishly, paying for charlie’s treatments for a whole year drains the quinns’ financials and even though her spot is still open at her university, she just can’t afford to go

she ends up staying home even though it’s the last thing she wanted, and sort of… loses her sense of direction? she was originally going to be a journalism major ( rory moment ) but she loses any optimism about actually being able to do it when she can only do it from woodstock and in general, just becomes very disillusioned with her future

after a while her parents get sick of her moping around the house and push her to enroll at the community college and even though she had other plans before, she decides to try for an associate’s in business

her parents help her move out of the house after realizing how unhappy it made her, and she’s been living there ever since! it’s not a very nice apartment, she’s got a revolving door of roommates, and she lives basically paycheck to paycheck but it’s hers!

has been working at high volume for about three years, and honestly started skimming money from the register about a month after working… she was desperate what can i say

on jerry’s disappearance. at first jerry going missing is great for kennedy because she can take a little more money than she usually does and can go to work as late as she wants, but now, she is a tiny bit worried. i will say though that, as worried as she is, she probably isn’t as invested as some of the other characters? like mostly, she is worried about her job because she doesn’t really want to work anywhere else because nowhere else will she have a boss as chill as jerry, but at the end of the day, this is still very much a job to her. she can be very easily convinced into staying around, but i think that if high volume is a crew trying to go down with its ship, she’s definitely the one looking over the side like, fr? like maybe we can make it if we swim

from christine mcpherson.  i unfortunately think kennedy would be an annoying a24 girlie who watches lady bird and acts like it changed their life, and im allowed to say that because EYE am like that. i think they are both the same “stuck in a small town, not that sacramento is even a small town lol, and want to go somewhere to find themselves.” very annoying of them but ❤️ kennedy parallels a lot of christine’s desires and motivations in life and, similar to lady bird, kennedy can be a little childish when it comes to any criticism towards her but it also all comes from a very earnest part of her

from lindsay weir.  i think lindsay embodies kennedy’s aimlessness? like i havent watched the show in a while so bear with me but i get the sense that lindsay sort of just. stops being motivated to do well in school because she realizes that she wants to do something else or even just wants to enjoy her life. i feel like kennedy kind of went through the same thing? she had all these big dreams about going to college and making something of herself and like she didn’t necessarily choose it, but like even when she has the opportunity to do something even slightly similar she pivots and does something else entirely.

optimistic isn’t the first word that people would use to describe kennedy. it’s not like she looks through life with rose-colored glasses. it’s more like, kennedy believes there’s this version of another life she could have and that’s essentially what she’s working towards. she romanticizes things that she doesn’t know because she’s only ever been able to read about them.

strong middle kid energy, she’s used to slipping through the cracks in her family and in her life in general like definitely the kid who was “a pleasure to have in class” like she’s very annoying and pretentious but it’s not obvious unless you get to know her better. in all other senses of the word, kennedy has just sort of always been… there but she prefers it that way? she likes no one having expectations of her because she feels like it allows her more freedom

kennedy is one of those people who is annoyed by almost everything and complains perpetually about everything in her life including her friends and family etc, but as soon as you say something mean about them she’s like shut the fuck up. very strong “only EYE can say that about them because i love them even if i dont show it”

honestly she’s never really been a stellar student, like on top of just not being particularly motivated and wanting spend her time doing other things like reading, she also just thought she was too good for traditional schooling and she’ll front and be like well the education system doesnt rly do a good job catering to students who learn different etc etc like kennedy just do a goddamn worksheet for once

     HIS MOUTH OPENS TO MAKE another apology, but the second his eyes land on kennedy, trip’s features morph into an expression of mild disgust. ❝ i really thought we were doing a terrific job of staying out of each other’s way before this, y’know, ❞ he says instead, mocking the very first thing she ever said to him following his return to woodstock. and he’d be good to leave it at that, let her walk away and ignore the flare of indignation that demands to be felt as she completely brushes him off. of course, it can’t be so simple ; kennedy quinn always has to get the last laugh in. she always has to pour salt in the wound. ❝ yeah, girl genius, i have eyes.❞ he scoffs, watching the cheshire cat grin spread across her her face as the pieces come together. trip wonders briefly if this is what it feels like to lock eyes with the devil. ❝ no. absolutely not. and even if there was, you wouldn’t be invited, ❞ the last part is added with no small amount of contempt. if kennedy’s goal was to ruffle his feathers, she’s succeeded.

          getting her own insult thrown back at her earns a laugh from kennedy. it’s a good play, since kennedy is endlessly entertained by her own self. “very original.” with van buren in the picture now, trip’s mood makes much more sense though it’s not the kind of thing she thought she’d be attuned to. she can’t say she feels bad for him though, can’t say that there hadn’t been a part of her that considered his getting kicked out of the band a victory for her. still, she can’t imagine the kick to the ribs this must be. “looks like you aren’t either.” she watches the rapport between the band members, how self-important they look. this far away, they look larger than they actually are, more important than she ever imagined they would be. “can you believe we’re in the same boat?” though, if it was an actual boat, one of them would likely already be overboard, gasping for air.

christian couldn’t lie to kennedy if he wanted to. there was no mistaking the shit-eating smirk that crossed his face. kennedy’s lack of protest probably made the whole thing funnier. “not always, but right now, yeah. come on, you made it too easy.” he waved the apple-tini in the air, taunting her. “four words. i hate gwen stefani.”

          she’d be able to make her life a lot easier if she just relented, but there’s not much she stands by except for her own opinions. "the only thing i’ve got left are my principles.” kennedy grumbles. she stands there, arms still crossed, deliberating. “i-” a long pause. “yeah, no, i can’t do it. i can lie about a lot of things, but i can’t lie about that.” she tries her luck by reaching for the drink anyway.

❛   i  knew  i  could  count  on  you.   ❜   he  can  save  them  both  even  the  six  bucks  of  one  movie  if  they’re  crafty  enough,  and  kc’s  never  really  run  into  an  issue  he  couldn’t  solve  with  a  smile.  he’s  not  all  around  worried  about  it,  maybe  that’s  what  makes  it  so  easy  to  get  in.  ❛   exactly.  they  keep  ranking  up  the  prices  ‘n  you  don’t  even  know  if  you’re  gonna  like  the  movie.  by  the  time  we’re  all  stuck  paying  fourteen  bucks  for  a  ticket  they  better  be  making  the  best  movies  i’ve  seen  in  my  life.   ❜  which  will,  likely,  not  be  scream  3.  hence  why  they  shouldn’t  have  to  pay  for  it.

          a mutter of skepticism escapes her. “whatever you say, kc.” she’s not sure if she’s ever been called anything close to dependable in her life. “see, i’ve decided that the obvious solution to that is just to watch more movies with one ticket. so, if we live to see the day that movie tickets cost more than ten dollars, i’m just gonna start watching eight movies every time i go.” she nods with a completely serious expression. “simple. anyway, what movie were you thinking of catching first anyway?”

         “you, quinn, are one lucky son of a bitch.” it’s hard not to keep the slight impressive lilt to dean’s voice. the more they think about it, the more they wish they had thought of it first. it would’ve meant they wouldn’t be in such a crap position now. they raise their cigarette as some sort of toast. “one day, you’re going to pull off something truly spectacular and i want you to remember me as your first silent accomplice when the time comes. but getting out of this fucking place is easier said than done, trust me.”

          kennedy laughs at that, clear and unrestrained. “well, what can i say? someone out there is really looking out for me.” it’s been a lifetime of wrong turns or humdrum with nothing in between; she thinks it’s about time for something like this. “spectacular, huh?” she looks over at dean, wondering if she means it. “nah. i’m not that kind of person.” kennedy’s not even being humble. she does what is necessary: nothing more, nothing less. “well— if teddy can do it, so can i.” and now, she’s even got the money to do it.

TRIP,

     TRIP KNOWS HE SHOULDN’T BE SURPRISED. it’s not unusual for contests like these to invite old winners back as musical guests, hanging their success stories out like carrots on a stick for those competing. still, it feels like a kick in the chest when he turns a corner only to be met with the deeply sore and unexpected sight of his former bandmates. van buren in the flesh— or what’s left of it anyway— fresh off the tour and looking … happy. really happy. upsettingly happy. trip’s heart sinks, bile rising in its place, and he’s quick to turn on his heel with the cowardly hope that he can make a clean getaway before the others notice him. unfortunately, he doesn’t see the body directly behind him until it’s too late, crash course imminent, and trip has to set his hands on their shoulders to keep from tumbling onto his ass from the sheer force of the collision. ❝ shit, sorry, ❞ he apologizes. ❝ you good ? ❞

          “can you watch where you’re going?” kennedy snaps as she recoils from the collision. it takes her a second to recognize trip, but when she does, it only worsens her mood. “yeah, i’m good.” she shrugs his hands off her shoulders unkindly, rotating her shoulder just to be dramatic. kennedy continues in the same direction, still grumbling under her breath when she recognizes trip’s old band. she turns back toward trip. “hey, did you know they’re all here—” it finally clicks. it takes quite a bit of effort to keep a smile from forming on her face. “c’mon, no happy reunion for van buren?”

“don’t say i never did anything for you,” was christian’s only response. he let kennedy order what she wanted from the bartender before adding in his vodka red bull. when the bartender brought their glasses over, though, he grabbed both of them before she could answer. “before i give you this…you have to say admit no doubt sucks.” honestly, no doubt isn’t even christian’s least favorite, but he’s just being annoying.

          “that won’t stop me from saying it anyway,” kennedy replies with a roll her eyes. she orders an apple-tini without shame; if she’s going to be having a drink, she won’t choke down something heavy with the taste of alcohol. her guard is down — because he’s being nice to her — but it turns out to be a mistake. kennedy protests when he holds her drink out of reach, crossing her arms. “you really amuse yourself, don’t you?”

     SHE’S  SCOUTING  THE  AREA  FOR  A  FRIENDLY  FACE  when  she  notices  them.  max,  two  containers  of  fries  in  her  hands  and  happily  chewing  on  the  last  piece  of  a  hotdog,  makes  way  over  to  her  ex  -  colleague.  «  fries  ?  »  she  offers  in  greeting.  «  the  guy  in  the  booth  gave  me  extra.  i  think  he  was  flirting  with  me.  »  it’s  mostly  a  joke,  mostly  because  maxine  can’t  really  see  why  anyone  would  wanna  do  that.  boosts  her  confidence  anyway.  «  i  also  think  it  might  be  working.  maybe  i’ll  go  back  there  later,  »  she  contemplates,  even  though  she  knows  she  won’t.

          kennedy’s smile brightens at the sight of max. she takes a fry from one of the container gladly. “yup! i’m starving. these lines are insane.” and her attention span isn’t that forgiving. "well, thank god for flirty employees then,” she comments, continuing to pick at the fries. “oh?” kennedy stops, looking up at maxine with a raised eyebrow. “so thank god for flirty and cute employees then? maybe you’ll get more free fries out of it. you should get him to throw in a soda or something too.”

don’t tell him i told you, but christian was kind of having an amazing time at battle of the bands. the chance to get out of woodstock? shooting the shit with his friends? a few bucks to spare after some lucky hands at the mean-eyed cat? there was even the faintest trace of a smile on his face as he sidled up to the bar, and accidentally bumped elbows with someone else there. “hey,” he said. “want a drink? on me.”

          she’d never taken much interest in nisa’s band before, but once she’d heard an event was taking place out of town, kennedy became their number one fan. amazing how fifty miles can do so much for her mood. when christian bumps into her, her first instinct is to say no— and to include some sarcastic remark. but this far from the clutches of woodstock? kennedy shoots him a smug expression, accepting the offer before he can get a chance to take it back. “well, if you’re so kind as to offer.”

❛   you  ever  snuck  into  an  AMC  before  ?   ❜  he  prods,  figuratively  and  literally,  a  hand  poking  directly  into  others’  rib  cage  in  case  the  question  wasn’t  enough  to  get  desired  attention.  ❛   i  wanna  go  see  scream  3,  but  i’m  not  gonna  pay  a  fortune  for  tickets  ‘cause  i’m  not  insane  and  i  don’t  have  a  job.  i’m  thinking  we  smuggle  snacks,  get  in  early,  see  what  else  is  playing  and  wait  around  ‘till  a  night  show.   ❜

          kennedy tries her best to evade the poke in her ribs, but she isn’t quick enough. she lets out a weak groan, sidling up to kc. “’course. every time i go, it’s a three for one deal.” kennedy considers herself quite resourceful for this.. “sounds like a plan. it’ll be just the thing to distract us from the fact that we’re broke and unemployed, you know?” she smiles brightly.

 “didn’t the cops come sniffing around?” dean replies, doubtful. “like have a look around the place, go through the finances, that kind of shit?” to be honest, they’re not really sure what the police do in situations like this, but it seems a little unbelievable to dean that kennedy could be getting away with daylight robbery. “especially now teddy’s skipped town.”

          a smug expression crosses her face. “if they’ve noticed anything off, i haven’t heard anything.” though there’s a part of her that’s worried that eventually her luck is going to run out — that the karma will hit her like a ton of bricks. she shakes her head. “still can’t believe he just left.” still, as angry as she had been with him before, she can’t help but be glad for him. if she looks past that, there’s even a streak of jealousy. “he makes it look easy.”

reyna hesitates, considers lying, but eventually shrugs, truth on her lips. “nah. figured i’d make them wait for it. everyone likes a tease, y’know?” maybe she’s deliberately staying away, maybe she’s chasing drama. she’s not sure herself. curious, she tilts her head. “you spill the beans?”

          she might have, if there’d been anything to spill. it’s a good thing that, as far as things go, all they did was take part in a little fraud. so, “no. we’ve already fucked up about fifty different ways. didn’t wanna add one more thing to the list.” she pauses. “did you think i was going to?”

JAMIE,

“guess we are. i’ll definitely see you in hell, and i mean that as a compliment,” he replies. jamie feels a certain urge to tell her about what he did to kem, because he’s pretty sure kennedy is the only person he knows who would genuinely sympathize. but on the other hand, he now knows better than anything else that he can’t trust her with secrets. as much as he respects this true version of kennedy, jamie wishes he could get the girl from high school back, the one he had enough of a soft spot for to trust with basically anything. did that girl ever even exist? he can’t be sure now. “hm. skipping town’s probably safer,” jamie nods. his tone of voice is so nonchalant, the two of them might as well have been talking about the weather. “if you try to pin it on one of us, everyone else would just rally behind them. our coworkers are annoying like that.” as if jamie hasn’t grown to care for half of them himself. “where would you go? if you could pick anywhere far from woodstock.” 

          kennedy scoffs at that. “please, i’m gonna live forever. someone will have figured it out soon enough.” she’s not interested in dying. there’s too much of the world to see, too many things to do and experience. and if not that, there’s always another book to read. “thanks for the compliment though.” she nudges jamie with her elbow as a smile creeps across her face. she's starting to think that maybe there are things she’ll miss when she eventually gets out of here. “and way easier,” kennedy murmurs, nodding in agreement. “good point.” it is annoying, but she wonders what it would be like to be able to count on that many people. she wonders what it would be like not to waver. it feels like an impossible feat. “i dunno.” a faraway look settles in her gaze. “ i always say boston. that’s where i was supposed to go for college. but i’d go anywhere. i mean, i’ll eventually go everywhere, so it’s just a matter of where to start, you know?”

CHRISTIAN,

the remnants of a laugh still ghosted christian’s mouth as he headed out the apartment for a smoke break. there was still time for the world to combust, and if he was caught in the thick of it with a cigarette in hand…well, there were worse ways to go. he focused on the street around them while the inelegant noise of multiple parties – thumping base, shouting voices, sputtering fireworks – washed the landscape behind him. when he heard another sound, closer and louder, he turned to see another one of the volume-ers. “you’re not leaving, are you?” was his greet.

          “there’s a rumor going around that the world’s ending,” she replies, tugging her jacket closer to her. “wasn’t sure if i liked the company.” a ghost of a smirk — funny, when she considers that they’re the only people she knows in town besides her own family. but kennedy’s never been able to see a party to its end. “besides, i have other plans.” she shrugs— like it’s no big deal, like she always has things going on, which is never true, except when it’s new year’s. a chorus of cheers sound from inside, and kennedy turns even though she won’t see anything. “this isn’t really... my scene.”

MAX,

     IT’S  NOT  LIKE  EVERY  OTHER  PARTY  SHE’S  ATTENDED  this  year  have  been  disastrous  exactly,  but  it’s  safe  to  say  maxine  seldom  woke  up  the  next  morning  without  any  regrets.  she’s  already  vowed  to  herself  that  the  new  year  won’t  look  like  this  —  so  pale,  so  void  of  color,  so  cold.  eight  year  old  max  would  never  forgive  her  for  it. 

     so  max  reaches  for  a  beer,  her  first  one  of  the  night,  and  closes  the  door  only  to  be  met  by  one  of  her  now,  she  guesses,  ex  co  -  workers.  it  stings  just  thinking  about  it.  «  hey,  »  she  greets,  lifting  the  beer  in  salutation.  «  you  want  anything  ?  i  can  make  you  a  drink,  »  maxine  offers,  desperate  to  feel  like  she  has  something  to  offer  still,  even  without  high  volume.

          kennedy’s never much fun, well, ever — but especially around the holidays. despite all that, she used to really love the beginning of the new year, loved all the silly traditions and rituals. except, all of that is difficult to enjoy now that she’s out of a job. even if she had never seemed to like it in the first place, it had been her job, and her record store. she’s never been good with change. kennedy has just stepped into the kitchen when max offers a drink. she shakes her head. “any diet coke in there?” she pokes around the fridge and takes out a can of soda, popping it open. “have you got any new year’s resolutions?” again, a silly tradition, but one she likes more than most.
