Scanning the room for some sign of Evie, or maybe Jax, Daisy shrugged – as best she could in her ridiculous outfit – when she spotted neither of them. She figured Evie was probably off having fun with whatever new friends she’d made at Uni, while Jackson’s attention was no doubt caught by a particularly cute Irish man. Letting out a resigned sigh, she shuffled her way through the crowd of party-goers in a search for Kit, determined to help the girl enjoy at least some of her night. She wasn’t about to let it be ruined by Bitchy Bethany.
As she spotted her best friend, she found herself squeezing past Simon and Billy who – before her rude interruption – were deep in conversation. Her appearance didn’t seem to bother either of them, though, as they stared wide eyed at each other, all cheery smiles and blush-tinged cheeks. Blimey. When were they gonna just get on with it? Sending Simon a subtle wink and an encouraging smile, she toddled on her way and finally sidled up beside Kit who was wearing one of her famous scowls that Daisy so loved her for.
“Anyone wanna tell ‘im that Chris Pine in Into The Woods was a right tosser?” she asked, wrapping an oversized lobster arm around her friend’s shoulder. Kit leaned into her and Daisy planted a kiss on her best friend’s forehead, eager to replace her frown with something a little brighter. Fat chance with those two pillocks around, but it was worth a shot.
Before she could say another word, she found herself being approached by a man. A man in a really weird costume. She’d spotted him earlier on the night, his lower half a horse, and his upper half an example of male arrogance. Or, to be more specific, a man without a shirt on. She’d shot him a weird look, only for Simon to delightedly tell her that he was a Centaur, like that made a difference. He looked like a twat, but she wasn’t about to dampen her other favourite Hudson’s mood. Now, however, the bellend was staring at her with a look of disgust plain on his face, and he wanted to know what on Earth she was. When Daisy shot back that she was something a little more interesting than his obvious display of narcissism, Kit snorted out a laugh, to which the moron responded that she looked like a complete and utter wanker.
“Bloody 'ell, really? Didn’t know I came as a bleedin’ mirror, knob'ead,” she fired back, earning an eyeroll in response. When the man walked off, Kit howling with laughter beside her, Daisy turned back to her friend with a smug look on her face. “Well, I weren’t friggin’ wrong, was I?”
Relaxing now that the idiot had buggered off, she barely had a minute to turn her attention back to Kit when another man was approaching her. Blimey. Two in one night? A bleedin’ record. Only this time, the guy didn’t look like a total cock. Actually, he was quite cute. Really cute, and he was smiling at her. Even the way that he had phrased his question was bloody adorable, and she shot him back a warm smile in response.
“Aw babe, you don’t know?” she asked, a mischievous grin lighting up her face. “I’m a lobster.”
She stated it in the most matter-of-fact tone she could muster up, as though it were the most obvious thing in the world. Because, well, it sorta was. She was a lobster. A bloody huge one, at that. But what had been bothering so many people was why she was a lobster, and it pained her to know what a state the country was in that nobody seemed to know anything about the greatest movie to have ever been invented. Still, she could play along, especially when the blokes talking to her were as cute as this one, decked out in a duffle coat and wellies. She wondered who he was meant'a be, and whether or not it was just the few bottles of smirnoff she’d had that made her think of Paddington Bear. He was probably just a farmer, or something.
“Ya know, from the Nativity, init,” she continued. “Celebratin’ Christmas early, babes.”
When the woman whirled around - as quickly as one could whirl around in a lobster outfit - Kenny quickly, and sheepishly, retracted his hand. Given the way she’d spoken to the last man who approached her, Kenny quickly concluded that he was in for quite the verbal dressing down. He didn’t need any of his well-ingrained detective skills to deduce that. A red flush coated his cheeks as he pre-emptively geared up at apologise to her, only to be greeted with the prettiest smile he’d seen all night.
At her words, Kenny couldn’t help but let out an amused little giggle. I mean, of course she was a lobster. That had been quite obvious from the large red lobster suit. And well, the claws? They had been a dead giveaway. Still, he clearly wasn’t the first man to ask that question that night. Thus accounting for her sarcasm. At least she’d called him babe.
“Well, yes.” Kenny chuckled, reaching atop his head to tip his red hat so that it no longer concealed his eyes. He wondered how on Earth she managed to carry off that degree of confidence and sass in such an oversized, ridiculous costume. Kenny was beginning to feel a bit silly in his own. “That much I guessed at.”
Never one to interrupt, he let her go on explaining her outfit. When she insisted that she was the lobster from ‘The Nativity’, Kenny couldn’t help the wide smile that lit up his face. So, his presumptions had been correct!
“If I recall, I think there was more than one lobster present at the birth of Jesus.” he quoted, the words slipping from his mouth fluidly. Truth be told, romance novels were much more Kenny’s thing than movies. He could spend hours pouring over the tragic fate of Anna Karenina and Count Vronsky, or the happy marriage of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. Still, in the end, when his heart was heavy and his paperbacks tearstained, sometimes he liked to give himself a break with a romance movie. It consoled him to know that sometimes love was, in the words of the movie, actually all around. Even if he always thought Mark sort of got the short end of the stick.
“Sorry, I’m Kenny.” he said, putting his hand out to shake her own. “I saw you from across the room, an-”
Cutting himself off, Kenny quickly turned red again.
“That sounded like I was chatting you up, didn’t it?”
