So I survived, I have made it twenty four hours without technology. It was not fun and I would not be recommending it to anyone in the near future. My grandma says its "good for me" but you know what? I'd like to take her candy crushing' iPad away for the day and see if she still says "its good for you". I did not like this assignment because it was hard, and I like to waste my time moseying around on the internet. But instead of browsing the latest craigslist ads I was scrubbing the floors, cleaning the fireplace, folding laundry. Basically being Cinderella without the cute little birds flying around singing.
The thing I missed the most, was my beloved phone and MacBook, I knew I would miss them the most. I love listening to music on these bad boys and being on social media. I almost got anxiety not having them close to me, I would finish matching socks, and I would be like "oh no!" What time is it? Am I late for work?
My day of disconnecting was really boring, it consisted of waking up with the hubby getting him off to work (packing breakfast and to go coffee), then getting my own coffee and doing laundry, while the laundry was going, I did the dishes, and washed the floor, did another load of laundry. Then scrubbed the toilet and finally I got dressed for the day. Went to my best friends house. We tanned and talked and watched the kids. Then I went to cabin and tied up from the weekend be fore's party. Then I went to the hubby's work to give him a nice big smooch. Then I went home and did more laundry. Got ready for work and went to work at five. I worked until bar close (2:30 am) that night and was so excited when I got home and could go on my phone! It was the best reuniting feeling ever!
What I didn’t realize, I would miss, or even did I think about it too much, was my radio. I could not and did not turn on my radio for 24 hours and it sucked. I don’t drive too much though. I only drive to my best friends house (10 min), to the hubby's bar (12 min) and work (2.3 min). But I like jamming out to the radio or connecting my Bluetooth. Putting on my favorite music is one of the greatest perks of having a drivers license. On the plus side I felt like I paid more attention to the road without, my phone, and that’s probably a really good thing.
My disconnection was not only difficult for me it was difficult for my friends and family, around me. I told my best friend (the one with three kids) that I would be at her house by 1, and when I was not there at 1 she got worried. She thought something had happened to me (nothing did I was fine, just late). My boyfriend hated this project. He always encourages me to do my best in school but this was the one time he was like, "maybe you should just drop the class". He missed me a lot and hated not talking to me. My parents live in Canada and it was hard for them because I text them every morning I wake up and every evening when I go to sleep. My boyfriend ended up having to text them when we woke up and then when we went to bed.
The only thing that really surprised me about this experience is that I thought I needed my phone or my computer to survive. It turns out that I will survive just fine without either of them. I am not saying I am going to give up my ritual of morning Facebook and coffee. I am saying it is possible to go some time away from technology.
