i think it’s good for all of us to learn (myself included!) that momentary thrill of moral superiority shouldn’t guide our activism but like. genuine care for other people. all cops are bastards yes but what sort of language are you using when you talk about prisoners? we all want the socialism but have you helped your roommates with chores? when’s the last time you helped someone in your community? in your general living space? mood okay, kill all pedophiles … do you really care about victims of sexual assault and want to warn people about a predator or are you looking for the Zing of telling people off with little care to how your words may affect them ….?

to add onto this i’ve been seeing the same thing happen to encanto, and despite not getting to watch the movie yet i know its about Colombian culture and family / racial trauma and yet when it comes to fandoms filled with predominantly white people, the most discourse i’ve seen relating to the film is white people arguing about characters sexualities and ships (despite a majority of the cast being family) this is a widespread problem among white consumers, and the lack of restraint white fans hold when interacting with media for people of color IS a form of racism, when you erase the core themes of race from these stories and reduce these stories to ship wars and lgbt hc fights you are participating in racism whether you realize it or not, it is a micro aggression to ONLY find worth in our stories when you can tie it to shipping or sexuality debates, we and our stories already enough, if you cannot process this you are racist

actually I disagree with this.

it is true that a lot of “classics” are painfully misogynistic. it is true that a lot of books considered to be classics are overrated because of male circlejerk, and it’s true that women are being made to worship and admire books and authors who openly, literally compare them to animals or talk about how inferior to men they are. women are actually allowed to speak up against it, AND the portrayal of women who are trying to speak up against it as shallow girls who only want to read slash fanfics about men from Supernatural or other Succession is dishonest and simply misogynistic in itself - the jumping to ridicule women who dare question the talent of classic authors or quality of classic literature and who think the misogyny conveyed in that literature decreases its quality. the implication that they must just be shallow childish fujoshis if they don’t like Mark Twain and refuse to admire men who saw them as less than human.

sorry, I’m not buying this, and I’m even notorious for being too enthusiastic about male authors and scientists so it’s definitely not bias. I read a lot of classic literature and philosophy. Aristotle, Nietzsche, Machiavelli, Orwell, Dostoyevsky, Bulgakov, you name it. but I was disheartened reading the way they all spoke of women, and I grew into seeing the grievances feminists have with them, because interestingly most women I know who criticised them were adult, well read radfems, not teenage fujoshis. and I don’t read or write fanfction and I don’t like yaoi and other fetishistic content, but holy hell, clearly someone decided to be smug and pretentious at the cost of women who dare question male authorities lol. anyway

Me: white women who turn their noses at white male “classics” aren’t actually subverting anything because the places they run to are also just products of other white men who are equally misogynistic. Additionally these same people who say without irony that not paying attention during English class are now incapable of critically analyzing texts, picking up on themes, and genuinely connecting with the material outside of a the urge to focus on romance between two white male characters. Lastly, they valorize fandom and fanfiction as a progressive space, ignoring the actual work of women of color writers.
