âReally?â
âPlease Gabe, if worrying was a job, Iâd be rich.â
âI thought- I thought you didnât care anymore.â
âI always cared. I could never stop caring about you.â
âWhy didnât you just trust me to say things?â
âI was scared, I was scared to lose you forever. I though Iâd make everything worse. I thought maybe if I kept my distance, you wouldnât feel so attached. So that if I did something, I wouldnât lose you. Iâd rather have you alive and away from me than dead. But I was selfish, and Iâm sorry.â
Sebastian looks down at his feet. âJust please be here for him if Iâm gone.â he said softly. He didnât speak to the idea he deserved someone. He clearly showed on his face how he didnât agree with her. âHe cares about you a lot.â
Kerri touches Sebastianâs chin, her hand gently helping his face go up so that he was looking at her. âI know,â she tells him. âIâll be here for him. Weâll be here for him.â
He bit his tongue as she spoke. âI hated them.â he pointed out. âThey hated me. They didnât trust me over there and they knew I was only there because of Lennon. So coming home and having people hate me enough to throw chairs at people who stick up for me isnât the warmest welcome.â he said softly. âI get it. Iâve gotten it for a while. Thatâs why I said Iâm sorry that I said those things, because  I get why people hate me and donât trust me. I guess I just worry about Gabe. Thereâs so much he needs to fight and he needs people who care about him. And I worry that itâs my fault, that Iâm hurting him. He cares so much and he says things like Iâm the reason heâs here and he couldnât do it without me and I just. I canât be that. I canât be the reason heâs safe. I donât know how long Iâll be here. If they kick me out of camp he has to stay. He needs it. He thinks everyone hates him, and I donât want to be a reason they do.â he shook his head. âHe needs to be fine when Iâm gone.â
Kerri shakes her head. âThey wonât kick you out,â she bites her lip, an obvious sign of anxiety. âPeople donât hate him because of you. Theyâre probably just angry because the new campers know about the war, but they werenât through it and everyone is probably just angry over that and believe they donât have a right to speak up about it. I thought that for a while. But this war every part of it affected everyone in one way or another.â She looked down at her hands. âThis war took more from us than just our friends.â She sighed. âIâm glad you were there for Gabe. I had abandoned him after that night he almost died because I was scared, it had been a thing Iâve done since I was a child. But you were there and maybe somehow you depend on him also. I always think back to when you said about how you donât deserve anything. But no matter what everyone deserves someone.â
âMore happened than you know, Kerri. I canât tell you what, but more happened than you know.â Gabe sighs. âIâve missed you so much. Iâm just glad youâre ready to talk again.â
âWe all have our secret Gabriel,â she says. âIâve been ready to talk, I just never knew what to say.â
âI donât want to think about anything right now.â
âFacing your problems to make them better, takes time. But trust me, the hurt dulls.â
He sighed. âReally itâs fine.â he said. âI was just freaking out. I thought it was all my fault. And I get that people want me gone. You had a right to be angry.â
âWell some people went through a lot more than others in the war, like Ariana lost her whole family, my sister lost her fiance, Jacob died and then came back to life, other people have had to kill others to survive. Itâs going to take more time than other people till hey stop feeling like they hurt. Sometimes it just doesnât go away,â she replies to him. âI mean, Iâve been thinking about it a lot lately, Iâve been trying to get closure and I think Iâm finally understanding. You and,â she paused for a second before saying her name, âLennon, thought differently about the other side. Everyone was told theyâd be safe, theyâd win over there. We were told weâd be safe over here and everyoneâs just still really upset over just being majorly screwed over in all. We were pawns in a game the Gods loved to play. I didnât really understand it till now. Honestly to me, I think an emotional wound takes so much longer than a physical wound to heal.â She gives a small laugh. âGreat first year at Camp Half-Blood.â
Sebastian nodded a bit. âYouâre not a bad friend.â he said softly. âI was just⊠worried and it freaked me out. I⊠shouldnât have said what I did.â he said not looking at her anymore.
âNo,â she says. âYou were right. I hadnât talk to you much. I guess it was cause I still felt a little hurt and I was scared.â She let out a small laugh. âIâm always scared a little. When I talk about my feelings I go a little overboard. You were right about everything you said, I was just a blinded by anger to see it. I shouldâve been there for you.â
âYou know that if you need help sorting it out Iâd be more than willing to try. I really care about you.â
âItâs fine,â she said. âHonestly, Iâd rather you care about yourself right now.â
âIâve been alright.â he said shaking his head. âHow about you?â
âYâknow, the usual,â she says, shifting her wait awkwardly. After a moment of their last few conversations going through her head, she finally said something, âIâm sorry, Iâve been a bad friend.â
âI know. Iâm sorry. I never wanted to. I really, really want you to be happy, Kerri. And I want you to be able to talk to me.â
âI want to be able to talk to you too,â she says. âItâs just hard right now. Everything still a bit mixed up in my head over everything with the past year.â
âWell, uh. I tried to this time, but before I tried I was too much of a dick for you to want to talk to me.â
Kerri shook her head. âYou werenât a,â she paused not wanting to say the word but says it quietly, âdick.â She shifts her position. âYou just scared me and I was going through a lot at the time. Iâm still trying to deal with everything. My first priority was Hazel and then I tried to care for you but it just, you scared me.â
Gabe smiles. âHonestly? Me, too.â Heâss not sure if heâs lying or not, but for Kerriâs sake heâll say it anyway.
âCan you promise to talk to me if you feel bad again?â she asks.Â
Scott smiles at her. âNah, donât worry âbout it. I wasnât lookinâ where I was goinâ.â
âYeah, but I ran into you.â
Sebastian stumbled back a bit. âItâs fine.â he said giving her a little smile.
âSo, um, how have you been?â
âYou didnât do anything wrong. You needed to take care of yourself. I-Iâm so sorry that youâre scared.â He reaches forward and grabs her hand, looking at her eyes. âYou took care of yourself. And weâre both still here. Thatâs the important part.â
Kerri looks up. âIâm really really glad youâre still here.â
