What is amazing is that the orientation of the line of pull of these internal and external oblique muscles (see figure 1) into the fascia is a force couple (blue arrows). The orientation of the internal and external oblique muscles oppose each other in almost a 90 degree direction. Anyone who grasps the idea of equal and opposite force vectors in physics understands how effective a force couple would be in stabilizing a wood joint in a house or multiple joint anatomical area of the lumbar spine. This simple concept can be captured when you understand why a sapling is stabilized with 2 opposite ropes when it is first planted. This is a very stabilizing effect on the sapling. The obliques have the same effect on the lumbar spine via the fascial systems.

The third muscle in the lateral abdominal area, which Richardson’s work may prove it to be the most important, is the Transverse Abdominus. This muscle is truly oriented in a corset manner. When it contracts it acts like a corset via the fascial systems with the help of the obliques. They are stabilizers of the trunk or sacral, lumbar and lower thoracic spines. Stabilization is the role of the other important muscle in the first core. This muscle is the multifidus muscle.

Tri-Core-True Core
Most people know 2 of 3 lateral abdominal muscles that make up the first core, or “corset”. These muscles are often referred to as the obliques. Namely the internal and external obliques (see figure 3). The third muscle deep to the obliques is the transverse abdominis and Richardson et. al.-1 have written extensively on the importance of this lateral abdominal muscle’s effect on the first cores performance. Secondly, these 3 lateral abdominal muscles are only as important as the fascial systems (see figure 4) that they attach to form the corset I am speaking of in the first core.

These lateral muscles also have an anatomical orientation to the abdominal fascial system in the front of your trunk (see fig 4) and the lumbar fascial system in the back of your trunk (see fig 5 ). The role of fascia in your body is multidimensional, but in this corset system of the first core it is to tighten under the contraction or shortening forces of your lateral abdominal muscles (obliques and transverse abdominis). The tightening of the lateral abdominal muscles tightens the abdominal and lumber fascial systems. The lateral muscles stabilizes the lumbar spine via a corset action – NOT the rectus abdominis – they just close to the action so they get too much attention. Porterfield and De Rosa – 2, were some of the first people to speak about this concept.

TRI-Core the True Core
The TRI-Core CONCEPT
The term “core” has been used within popular culture, training, rehabilitation and layperson vernacular for the last 2 or 3 decades, yet most of the people using the term have no idea what the “core” truly is anatomically or functionally. Even most ‘professionals’ that have been using the term probably have not read any of the research to specifically understand what they are saying, or trying to say, about the core. Most people in the exercise and performance fields, even the rehabilitation professions, don’t even really understand the role of the core, the “True-core”.
This is a term I developed to set the truth apart from all the misrepresentation that this subject matter has attracted over the past several decades. Professionals including physical therapists, athletic trainers and personal trainers have trusted individuals and ‘gurus’ other than themselves to interpret the research and theoretical concepts that are the common perception of the core as we know it today.
In this blog I will review the literature and theoretical concepts that are the best suited to explain the function of the core. My explanations will illustrate how the concept of “TRI-core” works to enhance human performance and movement. It will illustrate how many of the training techniques that are used in voice and acting as well as golf and dance are attempting to capture the nucleus of what is the optimal performance of the core. These instructors are just not privy to all of the anatomy, kinesiology, and theories and published literature that I will reference and outline.
Truly understanding all of these concepts and how they work together will only enhance therapists and trainers ability to rehabilitate and train individuals. Individuals who understand how to harness these concepts in their own bodies will make any physical performance they wish to enhance more efficient and effective.
With the optimal physical performance of the core comes the optimal performance of the whole body. Strength and power will be gained almost instantaneously. The ability to hit a ball or puck will be immediately improved. Dance or swimming will be more efficient. This is truly what all individual sport and performance training is attempting to capture, but the different genres of training use different vernacular, and/or don’t necessarily understand anatomy and kinesiology, the study of movement. Or as I call kinesiology, applied anatomy.
This blog will be embraced by some and retracted by others. I wrote it to help anyone and everyone who wishes to train, teach and move better. Whether that is walking to the subway or dancing at Lincoln Center. These concepts are all “borrowed” from a lot of smart people, except one – the “TRI-core”.

Tri-Core.
The first concept is probably the only concept that I have come to establish, most of the others concepts in this blog are “borrowed” from other others, although I attempt to pull them all together. My unique first concept is the idea that there are not one but three cores - “TRI-core”. These three cores are situated within 3 separate anatomical areas of the body. Most people have never conceptualized this hypothesis. They have tried to expand the notion of the core as to include muscles that are dynamic movers of the legs into the concept of the core (and their concept of the core is that it exists only around the lower spine and hips). It is my stance that muscles that are primarily used to move the joints of the legs are not core muscles. These are muscles that predominantly and primarily move the legs use muscle contractions that shorten and lengthen the muscle (concentric and eccentric contractions) to move a joint – core muscles stabilize.
The 3 cores do not primarily move their anatomical connections, the joints; they stabilize each anatomical area in which they are located. I will elaborate on this later in the blog. But first understand that to be a core muscle, the muscle has to stabilize a joint first and best. That does not mean the core muscle can also control movement.
First Core
The first core is the core most people are referring to when utilize the term core. It is the lumbo-sacral core around the abdomen and low back (or lumbar spine). The majority of this core is actually a corset, but corset doesn’t sound cool in a “macho” biased western hemisphere exercise world. But the first core is actually a corset. And as anyone who has utilized a corset it tightens everything around the corset.
The second controversy of the first core is that it has little to do with the “six-pack”abdominals (AKA rectus abdominis) that gets so much unwarranted attention in the infomercials and general press of America. The rectus abdominis has very little to do with human performance and the efficiency of movement; it is largely a vanity figure. The rectus has little to do with the stabilization requirements of the first core. The first cores performance has everything to do with the lateral abdominal muscles and the facial systems that form the corset.
