i was reading the recent interview from grazia? i think it was grazia? and jonghyun talks about his mother a lot which is so cute, but i was wondering was he only raised by his mother or does he just not talk about his father?

the situation / his relationship with his dad is kind of… difficult to pinpoint because — while he’s never flat out mentioned the status of his relationship to him, his mom or his sister — he’s also hasn’t tried to hide that, whatever that “status” is, it’s not a very good one. he’s told stories in the past about him that were cute, such as: how his dad used to do a lot of overseas work when he was a kid and he tried to “stop” him from going on a work trip once by sticking a massive raw fish into the engine of his car so it wouldn’t work, and he once mentioned that his dad was the one who bought him his first bass guitar. but he’s also pointed out how “strict” his dad was raising him in comparison to his mom who he’s mentioned was easy going and “understanding”.

he’s actually opened up a lot more about it since the start of blue night, telling a few stories and mentioning him every now and again but none of “said” stories have been very… positive, honestly. the first time he mentioned him more than in passing was last november when he brought up how his dad tried to cancel his enrollment to a music high school to get him back into his old regular high school but his mom stood her ground / “believed” in him so he got to keep on attending. the second mention that really stood out was early last month when he talked about how beautiful his mom had always been and made an obvious dig at his dad by using a term to describe him that kind of implied that his dad was a “bad” guy who dated really younger women so that raised some eyebrows. it kind of goes in line with a comment he made back in 2013 where he basically implied that if he could go back in time and meet his mom as a young adult he’d ask her why she married his dad.

overall, it seems like his relationship with his dad is either strained or doesn’t exist at all. he lives with his family still, but only his mom and sister and he’s stressed that it’s just them which makes it pretty clear that his parents are probably either separated or divorced. (i’ve seen people speculate that his father may have passed away but people have rebutted this but pointing out that jonghyun refers to his dad in the present tense still, so.) he also goes out of his way to emphasis on how much his mom has done for him in his life (and his sister) as well and makes comments like: “my life’s center and source of nourishment are my mother and sister. i continue to go on living because of those two people.”  it’s just… kind of blatant. jonghyun has every right to keep whatever happened to himself because it’s his life and people should respect that but it is clear. his dad has never attended a single event since his debut either (ie: he wasn’t there during the segment in “i am” when families were waiting for shinee after their debut stage, he’s never attended any of their concerts to anyone’s knowledge, he didn’t attend his solo debut showcase), so.

Kibum stares at Jonghyun challengingly and pulls his comforter up to his nose. It’s too early in the morning to be up. Just because Jonghyun needs to be in early at the office doesn’t mean that Kibum needs to be damned to a morning that starts much too early. Kibum has the day off; he could roll out of bed at noon if he really wanted to.

“Get up. Come on. You make the best pot of coffee. I need caffeine or I’ll die today,” Jonghyun says, a whiny lilt to his words. “Then you can go back to bed, I promise. Just get up.”

Kibum sticks out his tongue at his boyfriend. “You can’t make me get out of bed.”

“Wanna bet?”

The challenging look that Kibum had earlier is on Jonghyun’s face now. Kibum knows he’s in for it now, even if it’s only just after five o'clock in the morning. He thinks, for a split second, that he should just make Jonghyun his coffee lihe the caring boyfriend he is, but before he can change his tune, Jonghyun is scooping him into his arms, blankets and all.

“Jonghyun!” Kibum gasps, trying to uncover his hand to punch his shoulder. “I’m heavy! You’re going to hurt yourself.”

Jonghyun drops Kibum off in the kitchen and gives him a smooch. “Thank you for making me coffee, sweetheart.”

Kibum grumbles and rolls his eyes but holds his blanket around his shoulders like a cape before turning to the coffee pot and grabbing coffee filters from the cabinet. “You’re lucky I love you, Jonghyun.”
