i have a lot of feelings and thoughts about coelacanths today

like… they’re blue

you have this mysterious fish that  no one really cared about, because everyone assumed they’d gone extinct with the dinosaurs. an interesting footnote, but one of many, many fossil species. 

and later the coelacanth gets some fame as a so-called “missing link” species, a theory which is now outdated (and not accurate for coelacanths) but was really influential at the time. because they have some weird biological quirks – bones in fins! – people were like “oh, they must be a missing link.” so the coelacanth was launched into some fame with the theory of evolution. it got brought up a lot. drawn in old textbooks as proof.

and then a fisherman finds a weird fish off the coast of south africa and calls a local fish expert who had let it be known she was interested in weird finds, and he brings her the (unfortunately badly rotted) corpse and she’s like “well, this is sure weird,” and sends off the bones to other experts, who start to quietly freak out, and rush to south africa, and rewards are offered for another one, any other one, and a few years later one is caught and frozen before rotting.

and it’s this incredible discovery, this extinct creature come to life (the prehistoric coelacanth lived in swamps and marshes in south america; these now are deep ocean fish in and around the indian ocean, but it’s still recognizably the same species)!

but it’s also blue.

not like, muddy blue, or tumblr-default-background blue.

proper shimmering sapphire blue and white. almost turquoise in some lights. this like… muddy, fossil creature. always drawn in dinosaur browns and grays. and it’s alive and it’s blue. just imagine being the scientist who opened that crate to this creature for the first time. you’re already excited, you’ve known about this fish for decades, you thought it was a story, you know it’s in this box. you expect  to see the weird fins and the strange tail. you know it’s large and odd looking. and you open it up and it’s this beautiful, shining blue, you know?

Update:

I've been making small dolls with THIN limbs for a while now, so I'm aware that the frills may be DIFFICULT, but it's a challenge I'm willing to face!

I laid out my cut shapes in the same manner as in the tutorial .... I'm not sure what those extra parts are for, in the top right of the tutorial - another stomach piece...? For some sort of... lining? That extra little piece is also confusing me... i will have to watch through the tutorial again.

I modified the foot shape so that there is a big toe and a little toe.

I gave my main frill slightly bulbous tips, as I like Scavs with those. Looks like little plant buds :3

Well, let's see how it goes!

Another update:

The material i've chosen is this white/creamy faux fur stuff, sourced from an old piece of clothing handed to me. I like to recycle!

Feet are vaguely feet shaped...

HANDS 🤗 i used pleather from my old couch for the hands and stomach!... but I decided to go with fur instead after all. I did consider putting that pleather back in to make a soft belly but... nah.

Behold! The body pieces (sans the head and frills)

Hands complete! There are some marks on the pleather and the thread is quite visible unfortunately. It's okaaay!

I'm going to rewatch the tutorial on how to connect the other pieces and then think about what fabric to make the head and frills out of. :)

THE WORM.

The magical moment where you don't know how it will turn out until you...

....TURN IT INSIDE-OUT!

Turns out I have a rather chubby Scavenger 🤭 So the arms looked... weird, in the positioning on the original design, sooo one is going to be held up, as though pointing, but since attaching it I have decided that I am going to make them a spear!

I really wanted to attach the feet and stuff it too, but I don't have any of that fancy weighted stuff to go inside a plushy, so i searched around for weighted things and decided upon marbles.

Because-

-PORLS.

So now I am working on the head.

I have a snowy Scavvy, but the only fuzzy material I have is brown... but I found this interesting pattern (a sweater/jumper) and I hope it works out... because I don't want to sew this again! I'm making every stitch small and close, in the hope that it never comes apart.

I'm not updating again until it's all finished :3

My mind has already started thinking up lil story ideas for them! Set far into the future, perhaps even far beyond Saint's time, this Scavenger has adapted to the life of the snow.

....um. that's about it so far! 😅

I was inspired by another crafter who gave neck fluff to their Scavenger plush (using this pattern). I also solved the issue with the thread looking bare on pleathery hands by adding the fluff on the wrists. I took out a lot of the first stuffing I put in them and squeezed the rest about to make them less rotund. I added a utility belt and gave them a little rope, two beads and two 'bubble fruit'.

After the head was fully secured (and especially after the neck floof was added) and the excess stuffing removed, that left arm could probably have looked okay being positioned the same as the right arm after all. As it was held up, though, I made them a spear from a thin cardboard tube wrapped in pleather.
