Inktober Day 11: Tuna The tuna (prickly pear or cactus fruit) is a fruit that has been found in Perú since ancient times. The inside of the fruit is bright red, almost purple with many small seeds. It is said to be good for digestion as well as preventing and helping diabetes. I've been working on a few other projects, so I'm falling a bit behind on these. This is Yana; my uncle's dog. Inktober Day 10: Quinoa Quinoa was domesticated by the Andean people about 3,000 to 4,000 years ago. The Inca considered it a sacred crop. It is a complete protein with nine essential amino acids and is often used in place of rice. Now that quinoa has grown in popularity around the world, it's been harder for the people of Perú to afford their native crop. Farmers would much rather sell it/ export it than it eat it themselves. Inktober Day 9: Lucuma Lucuma is a subtropical fruit native to Perú. It's been described to taste a bit like maple and sweet potato. It's commonly used as an ingredient for ice cream, but it is also found in cakes, puddings, and other desserts. (THIS ICE CREAM IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST FLAVOR OF ICE CREAM EVER. I highly recommend it.) When I was little, I would travel to Huancayo to stay with my grandparents for the summer. There was always a street vendor walking around selling Lucuma ice cream out of a cart. It's sooo common over there. I'm pretty thankful that there is a local paleteria here that sells Lucuma ice cream 😀 #inktober #inktober2017 #watercolor #ink #icecream #lucuma #perú

Inktober Day 8: Aguaymanto Physalis peruviana is a berry native to high-altitude, tropical Chile and Perú. It has an inflated, paper-like covering that enclosed the berry. This fruit is both sweet and tart and is commonly used in pastries and drinks. It took me some time to figure out what this fruit was called. I know I've had it several times while in Perú, but my family calls it "puchi puchi." I have vivid memories of me eating these as a kid ☺️ #inktober #inktober2017 #watercolor

Day 7: Coca The Coca plant grows in the Andes region of South America. It's first consumption in Perú dates to around 2000BC. It is traditionally used for medicinal purposes to combat fatigue, hunger, thirst, and altitude sickness. Coca has a high calcium content and was/is used as an anesthetic. When I made the trip to Cusco, my mom made sure we drank lots of mate de coca (coca tea) throughout our visit. I reported no altitude sickness at all. Inktober Day 4: Qantu(ta) Qantu(ta), Flor del Inca in Spanish, is the sacred flower of the Incas and the national flower of Perú. It's a ceremonial flower used in many Incan rituals. There is a belief that the dead would drink the nectar from this flower to help them get through their journey to the other world. Just learned about this flower from my cousin who is visiting from Perú. This is her little shih tzu Ukumali! Or Uku for short. Inktober day 2: Uña de Gato Uña de Gato (translated to cat's claw) is a medicinal herb found in Perú. It's used to reduce inflammation and is often taken for gastrointestinal problems. It's one of my favorite teas ☺️ The name is derived from the little thorns found on the vine. This is based off of a cat I saw on the way to Cusco when I was in Perú in 2014. Inktober Day 1: Limón For this year's #inktober I decided to focus on flora found in Perú.
