I know there's a growing number of iconic wlw couples in media these days, but I'd like to take a second to remember one of the defining ships of the modern wlw community: Hollstein from Carmilla. Where else were we going to find a charming, wholesome, well-written, and unashamedly corny show where the main ship was played by two queer women? They have some of the strongest chemistry I've ever seen in any couple, and it's clear that both Elise Bauman and Natasha Negovanlis were passionate about representing their community. We didn't get the trademark purse-lipped kisses that a lot of straight actresses do. We didn't get the thousandth identical coming-out story written by the same two straight writers. We got a balls-to-the-walls wild ride about two girls in love who got to save the world together.

It’s so lonely being a lesbian sometimes. If you’re not a lesbian, you can really never truly understand the loneliness that comes from being a woman who has no attraction to men in this male-dominated world, while also trying to give our love to other women, who more often than not will not reciprocate it. This loneliness and isolation is one reason why I’m so happy to see other lesbians being unabashedly open about their sexuality, whether it be online, on TV, on the street, at a pride event… It’s just such a relief to know that I am not alone as a lesbian. There are many more of us out there.
