Progress (yay actual progress) update 2
FSRs are really delicate, I had a couple more break on me, at this point I don’t know if it’s smart to get any more, buying the jacks and the cables are starting to cost a lot. I also had to buy a soldering kit since I needed to solder items. At this point the one shoe that I have built looks good but the code still isn’t working. I also found out that MIDI is probably the best way to go here. So far my project isn’t working out as good as I had hoped, it’s probably due to the fact I’m working on my own, my coding isn’t particularly strong so perhaps that’s it. I found a couple more resources online that have decent codes but they say I need to use a MIDI to Serial converter so I can read the Serial signals from Arduino’s analog ports and then do something with that, so I’m going to have to find a program that can interpret MIDI signals? On the upside the shoe looks pretty cool. I busted a hole in the back of the shoe by hand (meaning using scissors) it was actually really hard, I don't recommend it, maybe use a drill next time.
Progress (or lack of) update 1
I decided to use an old pair of shoes that I had laying around.
One of my FSRs stopped working. I’m having a lot of difficulty with getting the signal to come across from the FSR to the arduino. I was using a long wire but I don’t know if it’s actually working. A couple of resources online that dealt with creating instruments recommended using audio cables and jacks so I’m going to order them, they’ll be here at the beginning of next week.
Also the arduino coding is quite intense, it’s generally not working very well if at all, not entirely sure since I’m unable to test the system.
Final Project Proposal
Idea
After watching that video of someone adapting the rings of trees so that a disc player could read it as if it were a disk it got me thinking of music in everyday life. While jogging the idea occurred to me, what if you were able to create some sort of music with the steps that you take while running. In that moment I came up with this idea, something to add onto your music to make you keep in step while running. The SprintStomp was born.
Target Audience
The target audience is anyone that jogs, I plan to allow for a way to store data so that they can track. Data storage is all the rage nowadays.
Does your project solve an existing need?
It’s not necessarily a need but it’s an enhancement, plus with the advent of wearable technology, it’s going happen eventually that we’ll have some sort of tech in our shoes
Does your project enhance an existing interaction or human behavior?
It enhances human behavior, if we can visualize the data, we can compile a list of popular jogging areas, of stress on feet, and even a symphony of steps.
What parts do you need, how much do they cost, and when are they due to arrive?
I need some sort of way to connect a pressure sensor to the arduino that you can hold on your person. Then a portable battery source will do. I’ve purchased a couple of FSRs and they’ll arrive in a couple of days.
What, if any hardware, mechanical devices, and/or movements will your proejct involve?
Most likely some sort of mechanism for signals to go into the arduino and then something to allow arduino to play music. Everything will have to be durable since we’re going to be moving heavily with this. I'm likely guessing Arduino and Processing.
Who are your team members
I’m working on my own.
