Throw back: Príncipe de Asturias Awards Ceremony, 2004. In 2004, Prince Felipe was accompanied for the first time by his wife, the Princess of Asturias, Letizia Ortiz. At the beginning of his speech he dedicated a few words to his wife. Her husband’s words and the standing ovation she received at the Campoamor Theatre, made it very hard for her to hold back the tears.

“This year’s ceremony takes on a new, touching meaning for me, as my wife, the Princess of Asturias accompanies me for the first time. We joined hands in matrimony five months ago today; a step we both desired towards building a home, forming a family and sharing the precious wish to serve Spain wholeheartedly, with loyalty towards our history and commitment towards the future of our society. You will understand, therefore, how words fail me today, how I am moved as I express these ideas, and as I also remember that the Princess of Asturias deeply loves this land, where she was born and where she lived the decisive, unforgettable years together with her family and friends”.

I’m glad to see Mulder is still his dramatic 5 year old self. 

He goes to the parking garage of Scully’s job. Finds her car. Writes “DON’T GIVE UP” (hinting at their relationship or the search for finding the truth?????) on the back of her dirty ass car. Comes out from the shadows. And gives her a long ass rant about aliens and the government. Never change Mulder. Never change.

Tonight, history will once again be in the making. I can’t believe I’ll be watching a new episode of a show that has been off the air for 14 years. On my television, huddled under a blanket with a bottle of wine and zero control of my emotions. 

The show that made it safe to produce drama for prime time television. It changed what it meant to be a “scifi geek”. It validated our country’s growing paranoia of the government, embracing the paranoid 90’s by way of utilizing concepts of science fiction, supernatural phenomena, and gothic horror. It emphasized the anxieties produced by an immoral government and the fear of human insignificance. It ventured to tell the story of good versus an ambiguous evil. 

The show that inspired thousands of young girls to enter into the masculine fields of science and medicine and made it okay for women to give a voice to the traditionally masculine dialogues, while still embodying their femininity. It dared to break the moonlighting curse, focusing on individual work roles as a form of innocent courtship, existing in a prime time world full of boring sitcoms and dramas where the couple’s emotional life became too overwhelming. It reinvented the portrayal of male/female partnerships - the man respecting the woman as a person. The man doesn’t just save her, she saves him as well. It told the traditional male hero’s story through the eyes of a woman’s rational and scientific point of view.

The show that swept the awards seasons, globally almost every year, winning over 70 awards, including 16 Emmy’s. It was one of the first to transition from being a just a water cooler topic to one discussed globally on the internet. It birthed the term “shipper”, making “shipping” two people mainstream in popular culture. Brangelina, anyone? It is responsible for probably every other drama you watch today, i.e. Breaking Bad, Homeland, Bones, Castle, Supernatural… I could go on. 

The show that still inspires people to never give up. The show that still to this day has a universally cultural impact, one that continues to shape the way males and female characters and supernatural story lines are portrayed on both the big and small screens.

Tonight, The X-Files begins it’s new journey with the first of 6 brand new episodes after 14 years of being off the air and I couldn’t feel more sick to my stomach with excitement. Tonight some people will be introduced to Mulder and Scully for the first time and some of us will say hello again to an old friend, 23 years deep.
