CAROL (2015) dir. Todd Haynes
It’s season 1 episode 1 Scully and look at her face already.
It’s been 10 years since my last rewatch of the whole series, and now it’s time for me to do it again. Angst here I come. Wish me luck everyone!
Why do I do this to myself?!
Just finished s4 ep 12 of moonlighting and like. I know I say something along these lines after every single episode of this show but what in the cinnamon toasted fuck was that
Never in my life have I sympathized with any human beings more than I sympathize with the folks who watched this shit in real time in 1987 and had to endure this jack fuckery. I literally cannot imagine the screaming I would have done if my ass had waited around through weeks of reruns for stunts like this. Any of yall who did this the first time around are my heroes because I am losing my will over here holy god. Did you break your tv sets? Rip up the tv guide? I felt the ghost of Rage Quitting past as soon as the episode ended like it was imprinted onto the reels from y’all’s original agony lmfao
Firstly, sorry it took me so long to see and respond to these. Secondly— I know, right????
@julia980 I didn’t make it the final episode. Hell, I couldn’t even finish out season four. I came close, but just couldn’t do it, I kind of decided everything ended with the last ep of season three and the rest is blechhh
@dirtyriver 100% agree!! It’s not getting ships together that kills shows, it’s assuming that the viewer was only in it for the Big Kiss or the Prelude to Sex or whatever! Sure, we all eat that shit up and it’s a huge part of it, but it’s so lazy to think there’s nowhere to go after getting a shop together. Uh, why not explore the whacky dynamics of a pair of people who are clearly star crossed (if we’ve watched x number of seasons of a show waiting for them to admit feels for each other), that’s a big change and there’s sure to be shenanigans involved. That worked for Bones, as I recall. I think I watched most of that show, even after they got together. What I hate is will they won’t they followed by eternal maybe (the x-files) or will they won’t they followed by on again off again (battlestar galactica). Dammit, Glenn, why couldn’t you just commit to the bit! (I know the actors’ egos were a factor, but I read that Cybill really objected pretty vehemently to the whole Walter thing but the writers were firm about it)
Oh, I’ve only seen clips of S5. No way I could make it through full episodes. In my first Hulu run through I saw more of S4 but avoiding a lot of it henceforth. Once you binge a series you go to YouTube and devour everything you can find and things happen. I had to know sort of how it ends so I could feel better about complaining about it on forums like this. 😂
I agree about “the curse.” It’s like the writers already pre-determined that people would lose interest so they just decided to fark it up on purpose. They never tried to make it work, ever. Writing the leads out of character and scrapping all the growth they’d undergone for having known each other is what killed the show. Treating their relationship like it was based only on sex (the month-long marathon affair wherein they ignore each other during the day and fall into bed at night) is what killed the show.
In an interview for the dvd release, Bruce says that they knew the consummation was coming and everyone was dreading it because they knew it would change. Caron jumps in to disagree with that (Cybill agrees with Caron) and he says, “oh I agree that it did change but I don’t believe it had to change.” I would really like to know exactly what he means by that because they cut there and you don’t see the rest of that discussion (if there is more).
I really should go digging for interviews to try and piece more of the on-set drama info together honestly. I just think it’s so wild when people design a show to have a whole premise based around the potential romance between two characters, and then they act like they are suddenly cornered when it becomes unfeasible to have the characters avoid admitting their feelings etc. for years and years. I feel like showrunners should always have a plan an and a plan b/ plan a is how the show will go if there’s a lot of interest and they continue for more than a few seasons, and plan b is how to wrap shit up with a climatic “they finally got together” moment if the show isn’t doing great numbers-wise. Idk, like…. Where was the planning here? What did they expect to happen? And also I wanna know what happened with mark harmon, like was he busy or something or just had a bad time with it and couldn’t come back? Because that was the only logical way to do the “Maddie marries another guy” plot twist and get away with it, was if it was, you know, the guy who had asked her to marry him in the first place! I feel like they could’ve salvaged the season and maybe ended the show on a higher note if only we’d had some more Sam. But I also love to look at mark Harmon so there’s that 😂
Okay, so I literally just unearthed this tidbit from US Weekly in 2000, I think:
Glenn: As the guy who sort of engineered that choice, I must tell you, I still believe with all my heart, that the show became less interesting, not because you slept together, but because there were a whole bunch of serendipitous things that happened that were beyond everybody's control. Cybill got pregnant with twins and was unavailable to us. So there was really no chance to explore and suddenly, I had Claymation Cybills and I was finding any way I could to shoot -- do you remember that?
Bruce: That's right!
Glenn: We won an Emmy for that. And all it was was me desperately trying to figure out how to get a show done without the actors. As a writer though, I thought.....'cause everybody said, "You can't have them together. It'll kill the show." And I went, "No, no, no, no, if they're genuinely whole people, if I've created whole characters, then they will change yet again, as we all do when we meet people, when we're involved with people and then those people stay in our lives." You know, there were great stories to be told there, and we sorta never got to tell them because all these other things were going on. I started directing movies, you were in some, you know, all our lives got much more complicated, but the principal problem at that point was, you know, it just became harder and harder to shoot a whole show....
Oh Glenn, what a bunch of bologna. He’s basically blaming the poor and bizarre writing choices on Cybill’s pregnancy (he mentions ‘other things’ going on but that’s his main impediment). He acts like they had no other choice than to break them up to deal with Cybill’s absence. 🙄 No. No, Glenn, the show became less interesting because you very deliberately poured cold water on the flame, which was always the heart and engine of the show. People didn’t watch for the zany detective work (hell, Glenn didn’t even care about that). They watched for the romantic/sexual pull between the main characters. Nobody wanted to see a pod Maddie senselessly stringing David along with word salad dialogue, or a bitter, closed off, back-to-playing-around-with-other-women David. Nobody wanted to see them working together as “amicable exes.” The slapstick did not work the same without the romantic undercurrent. How did they not get that?
Re: Mark Harmon—it definitely would have made more sense to bring him back. It was Sam’s baby after all, or so they tried to tell us at every opportunity. He had scheduling conflicts during his initial run so that could have been it but it wouldn’t surprise me if they didn’t even go there since they were committed to Walter. 🙄
Wow, great find! Yeahhhhh I see what he means, but obv we all know that “my lead actress is pregnant” has never stopped many, many shows and movies from going ahead. And since they went with the Uh Oh, Pregnant Maddie plotline anyway, it seems nonsensical to have taken it the way they did, like… it was all tee’d up for a long-term relationship with a new baby thing, and they still hit the ball way into a sand trap with Walter and Chicago and the dipesto and viola show and fucking David being stuck in a chain gang. Glenn seems like he allllmost gets it when he mentions that they won an Emmy for the weird stuff— the weird stuff was great, that was maybe the best part of the whole show, being halfway through an episode and there’s a dream sequence or pies being thrown or a dance number happens or the set starts being dismantled. He seems to know his skills were not the detective shtick (every plot was beyond predictable, let’s be real), but idk it sounds like they were all tired and frustrated and maybe this was his way of working in an out earlier than the studio (I imagine) would originally have wanted when it was a prime time hit early on
This show was my first tv series. And it was great. And, I mean, great! It was the best tv show that ever happened on tv and it still holds up. Glenn was a lazy, abusive (confirmed by recent developments) and down right ungrateful show runner. He never got over that Cybill got pregnant which is natural and should not be a problem. He bullied her and wrote ridiculous, out-of-character plot lines for her (mainly for her) in vengeance and on purpose. Did the same for her co-star, making him into an unbearable a$$. Not realizing or not caring that without her or Bruce, together, doing their thing the show wouldn’t make it past the pilot. It’s a lesson - respect your actors that breathe air into your characters, love them and support them in real life events. Otherwise, you will be writing for your own entertainment and your, even most brilliant work will never be seen on screen.

Finally, I have a bit of a break, might as well watch some Outlander. I heard it’s a hoot and only sunshine and butterflies, so can’t wait ☺️☺️

only one more season of promo like this 😭✋🏻 #Outlander #JamieAndClaire
I can taste the freedom of summer 🤞🤞🤞
When is the rest of the new season of Outlander going to come out already? I watched all the shows and movies I wanted to watch… getting thirsty over here.
I even watched Dune II.
the year is 2024. I am watching The X Files 1x08 with my blissfully offline boyfriend. We reach the scene where, in confinement, Mulder and Scully examine each other's backs for alien marks. My boyfriend, who has never seen the show before, makes an amused noise and utters a strong contender for understatement of the year:
"I'm guessing there's fanfiction about these two"
I just started watching the x files and like you're introduced to Mulder as this "spooky" weird, off putting dude and Scully is a rational scientist medical doctor then 5 episodes in you find out he's just autistic but she's catholically deranged

Coincidences?! Is it another coincidence to use the same shape and the same color to delete the license plate ?….🚗
And of course the like of Villa no ego Coincidences?
Sam's first Audi and even back then we were wondering why a family size car? He posted this 5 days after Caitriona's birthday and 8 days after Ibiza in 2015! Hmm... July 2016, more hmm. Just speculations, folks. JMHO!
He is a tall dude, SUVs have more leg and head room usually. Among other reasons.
