In Yiddish we don’t say “I hate you, we say "Ale tseyn zoln dir aroysfaln, nor eyner zol dir blaybn af tsonveytik.” And I think that’s beautiful.

tips on how to write a jewish character (written by a jew)
jewish people are constantly categorized as being greedy, penny pinching, or scheming.... and women, particularly older women are stereotyped as the nagging jewish mother type.... so dont write a character with these traits and make them jewish or vice versa (dont give an already jewish character these traits)
also i have a problem with evil/talon aus with jewish characters/characters hced as jewish for this very reason. bc people see us as “secretly evil all along and ruling the world”
judaism is just as much a culture as it is a religion, and even those who have become separated from the religion still maintain a closeness to their jewish culture. if your character was estranged from judaism and their jewish culture as a child, you need to write on how this affected the character and how it affected who they became -- dont be lazy and just say they’re “culturally jewish” because that’s showing you did literally zero research.... how are they culturally jewish, how did they celebrate, why were they estranged, how did they reconnect with their culture etc... not every jewish kid has a bar/bat mitzvah, explain why or why not, etc, was ur character raised kosher?? a lot of times kids who are raised kosher and leave the jewish community are still repulsed by pork (for one such example) even though theyre not technically “kosher” anymore. what values or specifications does your character consider to be important to their jewish identity??
a lot of secular jewish people still celebrate major holidays with family and they feel a deep connection to their faith despite not being religious... many still identify strongly with judaism
but still like......if ur not jewish its kinda not ur place to write about being disconnected from jewish faith and culture bc its an experience unique to jews like...... same as facing antisemitism, its horrific and you really need to do your research bc its still rampant everywhere. theres a reason WHY so many of us become disconnected from our judaism.
of what background is your character? is your character ashkenazi, mizrahi, or sephardic? you need to acknowledge that the cultural traditions for each of these is DIFFERENT
hebrew is not the only language jews grow up with.... for example if ur ashkenazi and you didnt go to hebrew school i guarantee you that you will know more yiddish than hebrew.... ur character can go to hebrew school and/or know hebrew, thats fine, but if they’re ashkenazi they probably know at least some yiddish words. this will change of course depending on what jewish bg your character is ( see above )
uhhhhhh also if ur not jewish also avoid stereotyping looks about us bc we all get the big nose/curly hair/drooping eyes caricature a lot that categorizes us...... to “look” jewish is a thing we get from goyim constantly and it can be pretty harmful esp if ur not jewish dont talk about it lol
hanukkah is not the only jewish holiday lmao please do some research.......... and know why it’s important to us too, there’s way more to it then just lighting the menorah
this should be self explanatory but you really cant make jokes about jews unless ur jewish lmao
also since halloween is coming up..... im reminding you that the classic image of a halloween “witch” that we all know (green skin, pointy hat, hooked nose, warts) is actually an antisemitic caricature and it’s really no mistake that the features (and the pointy hat) are the way that they are... this is just something i thought i’d mention while i’m already here
tl;dr if you choose to write a jewish character please be respectful of our culture because it is really special to us!!! thanks.
dont make ur character jewish for special brownie points bc ill sniff u out right away
sometimes u just need smth soft and Gay

This week’s Jewish character of the week is: Angela “Mercy” Ziegler
(People assumed the strangest things about you when you wore wings. It’s like they didn’t realize that more than one tradition has angels.)
just hit 300 hours on mercy, wanted to draw something to commemorate it
although angela has worked in many different areas of medicine (especially from the research end), emergency medicine will always be her “first love” -- she always found herself returning it to it. her medical career began with emergency medicine, working on the ambulance for the city of geneva. she’d return to emergency medicine again, much later, upon accepting the position of medical director, providing physician assistance to emts and paramedics on calls. she loved that job.
even when she parted from this career path briefly to pursue research, it’s important to recognize that angela’s research in overwatch was very deeply tied to emergency medicine and pre-hospital care. the valkyrie suit was developed for ease of movement, and the caduceus technology was something she hoped to give to pre-hospital care providers everywhere due to its ability to quickly clot hemorrhage. she developed these things w her past experience in emergency medicine in mind. she spent the majority of her medical career in emergency medicine -- her advancements in nanotechnology, combined w the valkyrie suit, were her solutions to reducing pre-hospital mortality as much as possible. she witnessed so much death in her field that she knew could be prevented.
angela left the labs again to return to providing emergency care. many people remark that it is strange to see her out on scene, but those people just dont know her well enough -- that’s where she’s been for most of her life. she hates the labs.
bad take on mercy’s character is ppl making her the clueless waify shiksa who is incapable of defending herself or caring for herself and is just the prop to someone else despite being at the forefront of modern medicine
mercy is strong, jewish, and very very tired she is caring but level headed and smart meaning she takes no bullshit
plz dont tag as mo*cy

LENA:
lena feels a bubble of indignation rise in her throat, her brows creasing and nose scrunching. she almost grows defensive, but instead she keeps her voice light, trying to assuage angela’s fears rather than fight her on this.
“ but they weren’t, yeah? m’fine! obviously can’t be that bad if m’up ‘n about ‘n talkin to ya right now! “
she tries for a laugh, but her gaze stays careful upon the woman’s face, watching for that suspicion, for the threat of further prying.
and of course it comes.
but lena isn’t prepared for this, isn’t ready for questions on what she’s doing- or who- because how can she explain? how can she tell her friend that this, these wounds, they’re one of the only ways left for her to feel human and feel pleasure.
“ ange, listen, i promise it ain’t what you’re thinkin! you just- you wouldn’t understand… “
“ with all due respect, lena .... i do not think you are being entirely honest with me. i do not intend to pry, i just worry about you. listen, i am not one to jump to conclusions, but i .... “
she pauses, unsure of how to proceed. lena dismisses her concerns with a brief, nervous laugh. large eyes, unmoving, hiding something -- hiding someone.
angela knows who, but she doesn’t want to believe it. only one person matches the pattern of fatal wounds that litter lena’s body. most of her victims dead. worse.
“ i’m sorry. this is really none of my business.”
her fingers curl around lena’s -- she squeezes once.
“ but if you are seeing her, please, listen to me.... i’ll help you. we’ll think of something together. but you don’t have to protect her anymore.... she’s going to hurt you. she’s going to use you.”

LENA:
lena chews her lip, smile faltering as she glances down at her bandaged arm. she can’t tell angela the truth, can’t tell her doctor, her friend, that she’s been sleeping with the enemy. and that’s a mild way to put it when she’s been letting the widowmaker cut her up and break her bones all so they both can get off.
she knows angela won’t understand.
“ really, ange, ya don’t gotta worry! it’s all consensual, yeah? it ain’t like nina. ”
all lena can do is hope angela won’t keep prying, that she’ll take the non-answer and trust her. but she knows the woman cares too much to let something like this go.
“ consensual? lena, these injuries could have been fatal. in fact, no --- they should have been. you cannot tell me you consented to this. this.... this is unlike anything i have ever seen before. “
angela examines her. nanotechnology had revolutionized the face of modern emergency medicine, clotting major hemorrhage in just seconds. evidently, the abuser did not have such access -- though she made deep lacerations, she positioned them just short of major arteries. the intention was to keep her alive.
everything about this was deliberate. every single detail.
“ who are you protecting? this couldn’t have been consensual, it’s.....”
times have been turbulent for poor mercy i just want her to have a nice hot coffee and wear a big old jumper and Relax
