Dok2- Two Cents
âIâm freaking out Luna!â I raged to my best friend over the phone, scavenging through the clothing racks in the store. âJust get him a shirt with a printed gold chain. Heâll love that one.â I sighed at her remark. Her attitude obviously screamed âI donât care.â âWell if you arenât going to help, Iâll call you later.â I hung up before she could say goodbye. I didnât have time for her. My boyfriendâs birthday was today and I still didnât have a present for him. I promised him a surprise and I damn sure needed a gift to back that up. I continued to look through the clothing rack when an idea hit me. I ran away from the clothes, that was too cliche. I wanted to get him something worth his time, and my money. Something that he wouldnât have, of course. I ran out of the clothing store and out of the mall. He wouldn't believe the things HIS girlfriend could get him for cheap. It was 7 o'clock, and I was waiting outside next to the ocean view. He was suppose to be here at 7:30, but knowing him he would be here early. So I stood there in my teal dress that opened out at end like a skater skirt, and my white thigh high socks. To top off the outfit I had my hair in a cute messy braid, and white high top air force ones. I had to keep my tomboy style somehow. I heard rustling indicating he was walking up the shrudded staircase. I smoothed out my dress more and pulled on my braid. I patted the spot under the tablecloth where his present resided. âHey babe. I'm here. What's all this?â His face became bright. He was dressed in an all black suit, but of course he had to wear him a snapback and a pair of Jordans. I guess we aren't too different. âHappy birthday baby! I did all of this to show how much I enjoy you andâŚ. Wait let me resay that.â I sighed at my stupidness. Enjoy him? He laughed at me. âCute.â He mumbled under his breath as he walked up to the candle lit table. I moved out of his way, but he followed me to my seat. He pulled out my chair and let me sit in it. Then he took his seat. Just as he sat down he started feeling on that âspotâ of the table. âWhat's this lump?â He spoke to himself as he picked up the tablecloth. I couldn't stay calm. He found it. And he admired it. A ring. Not just any ring. A ring POP. He laughed and laughed and laughed. âIt's watermelon. My favorite. But why this?â His face remained amused, but I began to worry. âYou don't like it?â I started to tug on the ends of my dress. âI love it because you gave it to me. How much was it? A dollar?â His smile didn't fade. He was confusing me. âIt was two cents. From the nearest gas station, but the price doesnât matter. I bought it because of our first date. Remember we ate fourteen ring pops a piece and we both got sick the next dayâŚâ My head slowly fell. Why didn't he know the importance of such a simple thing? âYes, I remember. And my fourteen ring pops were all watermelon.â He finally put the candy down. âI didn't want to spend much on your gift. I feel like you have every and anything you want already, so I brought something significant for you. But I guess it's not.â I felt fingers bring my chin up. âDon't think like that. I love this gift. It means a lot to me. Especially because of the history it holds. No matter how much it cost, I still love it. And I love you. Thank you.â He leaned in and our lips met. And the rest the night consisted of us eating and reminiscing on the times we spent together. All of this and all I had to spend were two cents.
