Marc, for 5 months straight: I'm not gay and I'm not a mercenary.
Jake, apropos of nothing: Hey Marc remember when you had 10 boyfriends while being a mercenary?
Marc: 0 Jake's big mouth: 2 XDDD
Steven and Jake like to make up shit. Does that sound like a real thing that normal people do or does that sound like something Jake made up?
I’ll give you a hint. It’s something Jake made up.
Yeah no, that guy didn't but the other one!- the tall one- you know- [mocking voice] "Ohhhh MARCCC you're so COOL I think about you ALLLLL the time blah blah blah blah-" Stupid.
[Jake grins, almost sincere if not for the mischievous glint in his eyes] Now Marc, you know me, I've never been the best at math, but since you dated ten guys- each for about two week- that's... That's twenty weeks Marc.
Oh, and I kept all the letters they sent too. Thought you might like to look at them during one of your crying-in-the-shower moods.
Marc keeps saying he's "not bi" even though I distinctly remember him dating and breaking up with at least ten guys throughout his military and mercenary years
Yes. There were a few guys who did that with everyone. It wasn’t flirting. I don’t know what you think it was, and I don’t know how to explain to you that it’s not exactly easy getting by bunked in with twenty other guys for months on end, but whatever.
The Devil of Hells Kitchen was a force to be reckoned with.
Whispers and sightings had been seen throughout the city of a dangerous group lurking in the city– Seeking retribution, others to join their cause.. And that sounded like one thing in particular the vigilante was familiar with; The Hand. They hadn't caused trouble since Midland Circle, they'd taken care of it– Why now, why again?
For several nights he had just hidden in the shadows; listening, watching.. Tracking. Collecting information, memorizing heartbeats, movements. It was nothing he was used to before. This was.. Different. When he finally began to strike, it was from the shadows of the darkness.
They seemed like normal people.. Maybe they'd just gotten caught in something dark– Something wrong. He could hear an unfamiliar heartbeat lurking nearby, spectating. If he came any closer.. He could be dealt with.
He chuckles. "I don't get out of the kitchen much– I like to stick to my city. It hasn't always been safe, and ive fought over the years to change that for the people." Decades. "You travel a lot, huh?" It certainly made him.. interesting. "I'm sure it isn't any worse than mine." Though, to be fair– The light didn't bother him.
"..I should get back– Just wanted to make sure you got back in one piece. That's not a small injury." Neither were the ones still scarring over under his suit, but. He couldn't hide the hint of a smile if he wanted to.
He wasn't one to bond with other heros easily, especially at this point in his life– Not over a few hours. But.. there was something that drew him to him. "Keep yourself safe, Moon Knight." And with that, he jumped down from the apartment stairway, swinging by his billy club.
[Jake stood in the doorway facing him now. Wow, that smile. Something in his chest seemed to flutter every time he saw it. Even now in the dim light of the entrance, Jake tries his best to put it to memory. Nothing else had made him feel like this in a long time]
Aww, [Jake shrugs, a sheepish grin spreading across his face] I'll be alright. Can't let you be havin' all the fun without me! [He sighs, leaning against the doorframe with his good side] ...Guess I'll see ya around? El diablo sin miedo?
[Jake watches as he swings away, staying a few seconds longer even after he's disappeared behind the concrete horizon. He lets out a low whistle. That was good night.]
"I said I'm not interested in any company right now, go away." He grumbled, staring out at the view from where he sat on the floor of the room, half empty bottle in hand. "Shut the door on your way out."
He lets Jake tug him along into the next room, doing his damnedest not to trip over his own feet. At the question, he sighs heavily. "Everything's fine between us." Unless you counted Steven being stressed on account of the state of Marc lately. It was just the nightmares lately, of everything that had happened in the Duat. Reliving the worst parts of his life, nearly losing Steven.. God. He didn't even realize his hands had started trembling.
"I don't exactly have any protection from my own head anymore." Not since he'd found the artifact that had split them into three. "You were in there long enough.. You know it's not a great place to be." He lowered his gaze.
Selfishly, part of him missed it terribly, even if he hadn't been entirely aware of Jake much. "...What do you remember of the Duat?" His voice was nearly silent, barely above a whisper.
... Yeah ... I get that ... [There was no denying it. Jake had seen the things Marc had been thru, tried to protect him from the worst of it too, as best he could. But there was one time, he wasn't there with Marc at all]
... The Duat ... [Jakes tone freezes, body crumpling inwards without thinking. He was trapped- he couldn't breathe- he didn't have room- ]
[Jake had screamed for them. Over and over, until their names held no meaning and his lungs were empty. He hit the lid of the sarcophagus enough to break skin, warm blood trailing down his clothes alongside his tears.]
[He hears them walk by, once, too. Even heard Marc pause outside his room. ... He didn't need to cry anymore. No. Because Marc was here. Marc was going to free him. Jake was finally going to meet the people he loved most- the people he'd sacrificed his entire life for!- ... but then they left. Walked away, without a second thought.... Without him.]
[Jake felt it when Steven fell, too. He didn't see it. He didn't hear it. But he knew. A part of his soul, cruelly ripped from his chest. Jake didn't remember much of what happened after that- he didn't care to. There was nothing left to take.]
... [Jake realizes he's been staring at the ground when reality floods back in. He looks up, but not at Marc, breath hitching as he struggles to keep his composure.]
... Marc did you even ... [His voice is a broken whisper] ... Think about coming back for me?
He can see the way he nearly curls in on himself, the way his expression falters. God, he did nothing but fuck everything up, didn't he? He inhales a breath, trying to swallow down the guilt that threatened to drown him in that moment.
"My whole life, all I had been aware of was Steven, I.." He dragged a hand down his face, hands already itching for the bottle, to go hide himself in his room again where he couldn't hurt anyone.
"When we started having those blackouts where I came to covered in blood.. It– scared me." His voice is quiet, arms curled around himself. "I didn't.. know what to expect. So I hesitated." He couldn't bring himself to look at him, not when he sounded so.. fragile. It was unnerving. "Forget it- I shouldn't have brought it up." It wasnt worth talking about anymore. @khonshus-favorite-son
[Jake inhales, running a gloved hand down his face and straightening his posture. He had to be strong right now.]
Its- ... You didn't know. You didn't know. And... [Jake thinks back to all the times he'd intervened. The blood, the violence. Everything he had to do to insure Marc could take his next breath.]
... Im sorry. ... I was just trying to protect you, Marc. I should have reached out sooner. Maybe then I could have... [Done it with you? Protected you better? All that lost time was finally catching up to him]
[Jake looks over at Marc once more. How could that man look even more guilty than before?]
No- Marc, listen to me- [He reaches out] I'm glad you brought it up. I am. [He gives a soft smile] You can always talk to me. Ya know that, right?
"Just coming to covered in blood I had wanted to avoid shedding.." he inhales a ragged breath, lips pressed together into a thin line. It had rattled both him and Steven, really. It was hard not to feel guilty, after hearing and seeing how broken Jake looked in the moment, asking if he'd even thought to free him.
His gaze was anywhere else, and for a moment he was a child again, back in that place of someone who could only do wrong, only hurt people he cared about, made them resent him. He hadn't even realized his hands had folded into tight, trembling fists.
"It's not important–" He wanted to avoid the subject now, seeing all that it had done was suffice to upset the other.
[Truly, Jake had to stay hidden. He never meant to scare them, he never wanted them to hurt- of course he didn't- but there was no other way.]
[Jake pauses for a moment, shoulders squaring as he glances over at Marc.]
... If I would have told you about everything, would you still have let me help?
[His tone is more serious than he would have liked, level and cold] Would you have even wanted me around? Like seriously- you had your whole life worrying about Steven- you were goin' through enough already.
[He sighs, expression softening] ... I was tryin' to make it easier on ya.
"I.. I don't know." His voice is timid, quiet; truthful. He hugged his knees to his chest– A habit he hasn't had for a long time, not since before he left home, before the military. He squeezes his eyes shut, burying his face there. He knew Jake had only wanted to help logically, but God.. He was a train wreck, wasn't he?
He forces himself to take a breath, trying to remain level headed and calm. The alcohol had been slowly leaving his system, replacing the numbness with feeling again. He was suffering more than he'd care to admit, to either of them. But they deserved their freedom outside of the body.
[Jake freezes seeing the wave of emotions flood over. He wasn't used to see Marc in any mood other than mildly annoyed- much less overwhelmed like this! Marc pulls his knees up to his chest-]
[Oh no. What did he do.]
Oh Marc- nonono- I'm sorry, don't cry- it's ok- [Jake quickly stands from his chair, moving to sit next to Marc on the bed, a hand slowly rubbing up and down his back.]
This wasn't your fault Marc. None of it was. [Jake whispers softly, carefully pulling a blanket around his shoulders. He hated watching him like this. A piece of his own soul outside his body.]
He didn't have either of them in his head anymore to help regulate emotions he'd barely let himself feel over the years since Steven and Jake had become a part of them; he hadn't wanted them to know he was suffering. "I- I'm not–" He swallowed back the emotions that threatened to swell up at the others sudden words.
Feeling the blanket and Jake's wrapped around him made the dam break. He clutched at his chest as the tears flooded down his cheeks, body trembling against him with the silent sobs. He didn't know when it happened, but his face was suddenly hiding against Jakes shoulder, tears soaking through his shirt. Fuck, fuck, fuck.
[Jake feels Marc collapse into his shoulder, pulling him in immediately with open arms. Watching Marc feel this way always hurt, but caring for him? That was as easy as breathing.]
Shhhh everything alright, let it out. [Jake gently squeezes his torso, trying to help the shaking subside. In a way, he felt lucky. Lucky that Marc felt safe to let his walls down. Lucky that he got to be there when they broke, getting to holding him together.]
[Jake sits quietly, letting Marc sob against him.] ...Marc? ... thank you for trustin' me with this.

They seemed like normal people.. Maybe they'd just gotten caught in something dark– Something wrong. He could hear an unfamiliar heartbeat lurking nearby, spectating. If he came any closer.. He could be dealt with.
"After everything Hell's Kitchen has thrown at me over the years.. I welcome the normalcy. Though I suppose that depends on your definition of it." He breathes out. "Khonshu– Avatar?" He asks curiously, intrigued. "I.. I'm pretty sure that was the last of them." He says with a chuckle.
He grimaces at the sound. "Let me take a look at that.." He gently urges him out of the building with a careful hand, out into the night sky. "That's.. gnarly. But it missed any major arteries, at least." He frowns. "You need to get that stitched up."
Honestly, he was surprised the other was even standing. He himself finds himself sinking to sit on the ground after a moment to catch his breath, sliding the billy club back into its holster.
Yeah, Khonshu. Egyptian god of the moon. He's like- [Jake searches for the words, brain slightly clouded by exhaustion] ... My patron? I don't know- he kinda just stands in the corner and tells me what to do. Gives me the suit and all. I'm his Avatar so I gotta listen. [He shrugs, smiling a little. He sits down next to the devil] You get used to it after a while.
Hmmm. [Jake hears a familiar voice carry on the wind, the bird perched on a nearby rooftop] That's not how I would have put it.
Whatever- Not right now. I'm busy. [Jake whispers in Khonshu's direction, turning back towards his companion.]
[Jake stiffens suddenly as the devil reaches towards his arm, trying not to flintch as he touches near the wound. It's not that the devil hurt him, Jake just wasn't used to having someone that close. Especially over an injury]
[Jake lets out a breath he didn't know he was holding, slowly pulling away] it's alright, I promise. It'll heal in a couple days. [He lets out a small laugh] I've seen worse.
"That's... Definitely a first for me, that I've heard about. I've met mutants, super powered beings and the like, but you.. you're one of a kind." He says, looking at him. "That's.. really cool, actually. I'm just– Catholic." He huffs out a sheepish laugh. "That doesnt particularly bring me any ease– You shouldn't be walking around with a wound like that." He says, like the hypocrite he rightly is.
When he hears another voice however, his head jerks towards the sound. It isn't visible, but his eyes widen behind the mask; it's the first thing he's seen– Fully seen, since he lost his sight. It punches the air out of his lungs. Is he losing his mind?
He wasn't scared, no– He was.. In awe. He'd never seen anything like it, and to be able to see the full sight of whatever it was, after decades of seeing nothing but the whole world on fire.. Wow.
[You're one of a kind. Jake feels his heart skip a beat, an unusual warmth spreading across his face the moment he says it, quickly looking away dispite his mask]
... Catholic, huh? [He chuckles, trying to keep his tone neutral] Sorry for the shock then. Not every day you end up fightin' monsters from another dimension
... Oh, yeah! [he laughs, glancing back over at the bird] he's like seven feet tall too! Nearly scared the daylights out of Stev-
[Jake feels his heart stop.]
Wait. ... You can see him [Jake whips around, looking at Khonshu in bewilderment]
[A curious breeze passes by, Khonshus skull tilting to the side in wonder] Fascinating. A mere mortal, able to feel my presence? Tell me child, what power do you serve?
[Jake spins back around, not sure if he should look at the apparently visible bird or the only person who had ever pointed it out] Wh- What the hell is happening?! First the jackals, now this!- what are you??
"I've.. Helped the avengers occasionally, it's not the biggest shock in the world." He said, almost sheepishly. He can't help the way his expression softens, seeing the blush blossom across his cheeks. Cute. "Though the god thing is.. a bit of a shock." When the bird like figure addresses him, he looked up in bewilderment, and awe.
"Uhm.. I guess I would say Jesus?" He's not sure how else he's supposed to answer, really– This was all so surreal, so much for one night patrol. He never thought he'd see anything this clearly again.. And for it to be a god, of all things? "I'm daredevil." Not even god could stop that now. It was turning out to be a very interesting night, it seemed– For the both of them.
Hmmm. Jesus, you say. I've talked to him on many occasions, but I wasn't aware he had an Avatar. Much less one in a devils costume. [Khonshu stands, his staff thumping against the rooftop below him]
That was some noble fighting, Daredevil. I should hope we will be seeing you again in the following nights, with the Avatar of Apophis still on the loose.
[the bird hums contently] I suppose my son wouldn't mind seeing you again either, wouldn't you Jake?
[Jake freezes, embarrassment flooding his system as the words tumble out] Wha- Nonono- Ok- that's enough! Thank you Khonshu! You can leave now! Bye bye! DD over here isn't interested so you can hold the whole vengeance spiel, alright!
[The suits light was starting to dim, the weight of it heavy as Jake stands. He grimaces, grabbing at his shoulder once more. He barely had enough energy left to heal himself, much less for sustaining the armors power]
I should, umm [Jake glaces towards the devil, a smile in his voice] ... I should get goin'.
He blinked in surprise. "I'm.. Catholic. I'm not– Whatever an avatar is, I'm afraid." He chuckles, rubbing the back of his neck. His expression mightve been unreadable due to the mask, but he visibly perked up slightly. "I protect Hell's Kitchen, I've been tracking them for awhile. Watching their activity.. I can't tolerate another cult wrecking havoc on my city. I won't."
He laughs quietly under his breath at the apparent Deity teasing moon knight, lips pressed together to hide a smile. "You gonna be alright getting back on your own like that?" He says, nodding to the injury, the way his body walked like it weighed a ton. Regardless– He might watch him from a distance, to make sure just in case.
Well, we all have our shortcomings Daredevil. Expect for me.
[if Khonshu was physically capable of smiling, he would be] Ahh yes, an Avatar! Man gifted with the powers of the gods! The noblest of callings- depending on who you serve, of course. If you were ever in the market for a higher power Daredevil, I'm sure I could be of assistance-
Khonshu! [Jake hisses] What did I just say?! [He turns back to the devil, apologetic] I'm sorry about him. And It's shame because he was just leaving too, weren't you Khonshu? [He glares in the direction of the bird]
[Khonshu sighs] As you wish, my son. But more blood must be spilt, sooner or later... [And just like that, any evidence of the bird was gone.]
.... Really? You wanna come with? [Jake looks almost surprised. Usually other heros didn't worry this much. Especially over Moon Knight.]
My place is about.. [a map of the city sprawls across Jakes mind with ease. Oh it was good to be back. Counting the 10 minutes it would take to walk here- along with avoiding any unwanted attention- it would be...] ... 15 minutes tops. I know a couple shortcuts through the alleyways too. [He smirks] Unless you like seeing all your fans.
He was trying and failing not to smile in amusement at Moon Knights reactions to his.. Deity. "I can imagine it is. I'm not a killer, though– But I do everything in my power to protect the people in this city." He laughs, shaking his head. "Don't apologize, moon knight– It's not everyday someone gets that kind of.. opportunity." He could barely hide how elated he was in the moment.
He wasn't usually worried that much about other heros he didn't know more.. personally, but he was drawn to moon knight more than he'd expected to be. He blinked in surprise beneath the mask, head tilting to look at him. "You.. Consider yourself a fan of.. Me?" It wasnt exactly a regular occurrence for something like that. "Be a shame if you fainted on the way home– You look a bit unsteady on your feet." He was surprised he wasn't more worried about him knowing where he lived.
Well... [Jake pauses, a knot forming in his stomach] I hear about ya on the news every day. Fighting criminals, protecting people. ...I guess it's just nice to know I'm not at it alone. That's someone else really cares.
[Jake extends his good arm, offering to help the devil up] ... Are you feeling ok? [He smiles] Jackals, ninjas, and a talking bird must be a lot for one night
[And that's when he feels it. The hood and cloth wrappings of his mask, coming undone. He was really more exhausted than he thought.]
Oh no- [Jake quickly turns away, knowing that even in the darkness his face was still perfectly visible. He groans quietly, head sinking into his hands in defeat. What Daredevil must think of him now.]
"I've.. been doing this a long time. Longer than before Hell's Kitchen dubbed me the devil. When you hear as much as I do? You can't simply ignore it." He exhales, shaking his head. He grunts as he's helped to his feet. "I'll.. be alright. I've had worse." Foggy might yell at him for overdoing it tonight, but, well.. He couldn't ignore this.
Though– What the other didn't know, was that he wouldn't know his identity regardless. At least, not yet. "I didn't see anything." He says slowly, if nothing else to ease the others worries. "C'mon.. Let's just worry about getting you home in one piece. Yeah?" He offers a smile, even with the others back to him.
[Jake starts walking with Daredevil a few steps behind, doing everything in his power to not turn around, not check if everything is ok. He guides them smoothly through secret entrances and alleyway shortcuts, keeping both vigilantes out of sight.]
... It's been good to be back in the Kitchen. [Jake talks quietly, his shoulders relaxing a little] I was in London for a while- and then Egypt. Never really felt like home though. [He grins] Didn't think I'd be bringing the jackals back with me, that's for sure
[Jake stops at the door to his place, realizing he's slowly transformed back into his regular clothes. He pulls the keys from his pocket, unlocking the door to the cramped apartment with a slightly embarrassed laugh] I found this place a little last minute. Don't mind the books, Steven leaves them everywhere.
[he opens the entrance, looking back at Daredevil. If he already knew where Jake lived there wasn't much point in hiding his face.]

It didn't take long for him to come out to help, he was not letting Moon Knight get himself killed for him. "NO!" Daredevil rushed the creature, landing a kick straight to it's chest, sending it flying. A startled sound escaped him when it crumbled into a pile of dust at his feet.
When it came back for more, he hit it with an uppercut to it's chin. "Looks like you could use a hand." He helped the other to his feet, having him back to back. "What the hell are those things?!"
He had his billy club ready– That couldn't be all of them, not with what he was hearing. "Get ready– That's not the only one." He breathes out next to him. He barely knew the man, but he wasn't about to leave him to be mauled to death either
[Jake holds his injured shoulder for a second, watching the beast go flying. He looks up at Daredevil, half in awe but very confused, his voice rough from discomfort,] ... You can see them??!
[Jake grabs his hand, scrambling to his feet and pressing himself back to back with his companion, circling in place together slowly] How?? I thought you had to be an Avatar!- [Another beast jumps down from the rafters, Jake punching it in the jaw before it crumbles into dust]
They're jackals! Cursed ones, from the Duat! [Jake summons moon blades in both his hands, warm blood from his shoulder running down to meet the metal in his fist] If you punch 'em hard enough they turn into sand- just be careful alright!
[Jake throws a moon blade at the next beast, hitting it near the chest. No matter what, he definitely couldn't bear to have the devils blood on his hands]
The question nearly had matt faltering, but he caught himself. Shitshitshit. "Of course I can! What kind of question is that?" He was glad the other seemed alright for the time being, despite his injury as he jumped to be back to back with him. He smirks, even if the other man can't see it.
"That word isn't in my vocabulary, moon knight." He throws the club at another, wrapping it around its throat and pulling hard, kicking it until it crumbled at its feet. "So your nonsense is what the cat dragged in, huh?" He breathes out, and the grin is obvious in his voice. He hasn't had this much fun with another vigilante in awhile.
[Jake quickly thinks back to one of Stevens first encounters with the beasts. He was sure Layla couldn't see them, could she? They were invisible! He shakes the thought away, not having time for it in the moment. Still, it was a little odd, the way Daredevil never really looked in the direction he was attacking...]
[Jake grins, not even attempting to hide the excitement in his voice] Wowww- not really up on your Egyptology, are ya? Sad- I was just startin' to think you were cool- [he grabs another beast by the throat, slamming into into a nearby pillar]
The Duat is where you go when you die- lost souls and all that- [He throws another blade, hitting a jackal between the eyes. He smirks,] So you're tellin' me you don't beat up jackals every Wednesday? Or is it just my lucky night?
[Jake watches the way the other fights. The precision behind his movements, the speed required. It's almost like he knew what the jackals attack would be the moment it started moving- throwing his club with a perfect ricochet. He didn't even need to look up to catch it!]
Hah! You know- I would almost think you were blind doin' that!
He chuckles, almost sheepish. "Ah– That is not a part of my own belief system. Hardly have time for any educational reading, when hells kitchen keeps me booked and busy." He grunts, dodging another jackal that tries to attack him, hitting it over the head instead. "Can't say we've had anything this interesting pop up in Hell's Kitchen.." he smirks.
Shit. "Don't think it would work too well in the streets if I was blind, moon knight." He scoffs, slightly braced against the others back as the last of them were eliminated, panting as he fought to catch his breath. God, he needed to sit down. "What's the plan here? You seem to know more than me about what's going on." He breathes out. "Lets just say I have above average hearing.."
Ahh, [Jake grins] not too busy I hope. [He throws another crescent, finishing off the monster Daredevil just knocked unconscious.]
[He laughs] I bet the regular criminals get a little borin' after a while, no? They all must be too easy for ya- even if you were blindfolded
[Jake leans forward slightly as he feels the Devil brace against him, a small burst of energy in his next throw] There's gotta be someone behind the jackals. A summoner. I'll ask Khonshu if Apophis was in the market for a new Avatar- they can't be too far behind!
[Jakes strength was starting to fail him, the suit beginning to feel heavier with every passing moment. He just needed to keep it summoned a little longer, make sure they were safe.]
[Jake tosses the blade he's holding into the floor with a solid thunk. He drops his defensive stance, breath heavy as he looks around the wreckage of the building. Stray ninjas, piles of ex jackal sand, the devil. Nowhere else he'd rather be.]
Above average hearin', huh? [Jake gives a breathy laugh, pausing to catch his words as he reaches towards his injured arm, rolling the joint with a grunt] So tell me, was that the last of 'em?
