"You!" finger points accusingly towards the bake-danuki, other hand on her hip "Show me how you prepare your food." there's no shortage of stories about people being tricked with delicious food only to discover that it's nothing more than mud and leaves. Maybe if Diona can replicate it, then she'll finally make a truly disgusting drink.

     Me!! Kichiboushi dutifully responds! The excitement of being addressed so boldly has him wiggling on the spot, paws kneading into the ground and tail sweeping from side to side. Though he does not know who or even what this new friend is — what with her very obviously not-human and less obviously not-yōkai smell — that has never stopped him from playing along before, and it certainly won’t start to now! What can Kichiboushi do for you, Pink Kaibyō?

     Oooh, Pink Kaibyō is hungry. Of course she wants Kichiboushi’s food! Bake-danuki food is always so tasty, after all — and as the best bake-danuki on these lands right now, Kichiboushi naturally makes the best food on these lands right now! Yes-yes-yes, she is very so much smart to know this! Because of that, even if she doesn’t ask as nicely ( or as plainly ) as he likes, he will thoughtfully accept her request anyway.

     He sits with a decisive chirp. Pay close attention, Pink Kaibyō! With an air of great importance, he reaches out with a paw and taps the ground, where Lavender Melons from his pouch of treasures poof! into the space between them. He looks up to make sure she is still paying close attention, then begins focusing his energy as he was taught to. He lifts his paws: one clap, two claps, yey! Bake-danuki making-tasty-food Kapow!

     In spite of the rather loud process, it is a quiet happening. One moment they are just Lavender Melons...the next they are delicious Grilled Melons! The best dish a bake-danuki like Kichiboushi can make! ( The only dish a bake-danuki like Kichiboushi can make. ) Eat up, eat up~!

when did you start playing?

as of today, it has been...569 days since i’ve started actively playing this game according to hoy.olab...i remember starting during alb.edo’s first banner, so like...wow. december of 2020! jfc sdlfkjlfj

i almost can’t believe it’s been that long? i don’t usually continue playing online rpgs or gachas for a long time unless they’re for franchises i’m really familiar with ( as is the case with fire emb.lem heroes, and i still take massive breaks between banners with that ) so idk if this is like. concerning or not sdlfkjdfl

hmm not really saving for him so much as i just don’t have anyone to spend primos on atm, but ig i could say tigh.nari? i do follow leaks, and he looks fairly interesting from what we have of him so far! also. fennec fox. please that’s adorable, he’s adorable sdlfkjdl

if we’re talking about in the longer run, i do hope to grab cy.no when he drops! and ofc our fave harbinger-turned-deserter :)

do you have a food you use a lot?

i only ever use food when i’m co-oping with no healer, and the default dish i use in those cases is matsutake meat rolls sdlkfjfj they’re just really easy to make so i can ensure that i never run low on them!

what character are you most looking forward to?

for now, cy.no! i also have my eye on al-hai.tham and deh.ya...though i’m not feeling the hype for su.meru in terms of upcoming characters as strongly as i did with the previous and current regions’ :’) i hope future designs will be able to change my mind.

what region are you most looking forward to?

for all the lack of interest i might have for most of its current upcoming characters, the environments and music for sum.eru have me making big 👀👀 @ it sdlkfdjkfl i don’t really have a specific region i’m really looking forward to otherwise!

who’s your favourite character mechanics/kit-wise?

i have a few whose gameplay i really enjoy but my absolute favourite would have to be kaz.uha! especially since i have him at c6 sdflkdjlk he’s the only character in any gacha i have ever ( and will ever, jfc ) whale to such an extent for! he’s so fun both in and out of combat, and the build i have on him atm is. literally perfect!! he’s been with me on my spiral abyss trips ever since i got him and he’s never let me down :)

who’s your least favourite character mechanics/kit-wise?

it pains me to say this...and this isn’t to say that i don’t like her ( she’s super cute and i would give her so many hugs )...but probably kl.ee?? her kit and mechanics ingame just feel. too clunky for me, even when compared to others that i don’t use sldkfjlkd which i think adds to her overall character so i wouldn’t change a thing about them but i simply do not vibe with her gameplay 😔 sorry kl.ee mains

     One should never stray too close to Archons and kami, Great Protector Ioroi once said. He says it again today in the wake of this sharp scent on the breeze: the one that speaks of the deep roots of old trees, the sweet nectar of full buds, the crisp leaves of a coming spring, the wet grasses of healthy earth.

     The unmistakable tang of power made living and breathing.

     This kami must be really strong, for they stand out even amidst the smells of Kichiboushi’s home. Within this already big and old forest, they taste like an entirely new big and old forest! Very interesting, very fun! One should never stray too close to Archons and kami, and Kichiboushi understands why, he really does, but he wants to take at least one look at this Great Trees and Plains-gami! Just one look!

     He sneaks away from Great Protector Ioroi and the others in the shape of a Seelie, zipping through trees and along paths after this exciting scent. Ooohh, don’t go away, Great Trees and Plains-gami! Kichiboushi is coming!

carry + kiss, lisa would scoop up a curious little Kichi who may have wandered into a pile of her assorted books. She wouldn't be angry with him, rather plant a doting kiss to his crown.

     The human scripts here are very strange. Filled with marks and scribbles Kichiboushi doesn’t understand; even the artwork is different from those in the human scripts from his homeland. And there are so many of them in this den! Very so much many up here on this ground, very so much many more down there on another ground. He hasn’t sensed any spirits for as long as he’s been here so these dead-wood bundles should not scare him, but this too-much number of dead-wood bundles in one place alone has him juuust a little daunted.

     There is comfort to be found as well, though: a newly familiar scent spread thick amongst these strange human scripts. It is this trail he follows now, paws ambling from one stack of dead-wood bundles to the next and nose digging into the ones with particularly strong scent-marks. Which is actually quite a few of them! Aunt Light Fur must spend a lot of time here to have scent-marked everything this thoroughly.

     So busy with investigating this smell and where it’s been as he is, he doesn’t really notice the source of it approaching. It’s only when she’s right beside him that he does — perhaps unfortunate because she catches him as he’s flipping through a bundle with more artwork than he’s encountered in any of the others, tiny paws leaving tiny stains on clean dead-wood.

     Not that he realises anything wrong about that. Kichiboushi is just happy to see her again! He greets her with a pleasantly surprised chirp, which turns into a pleasantly surprised peal of laughing bells as she lifts him up and holds him close and — best of all — presses a human I like you! touch to his head. He doesn’t know what he’s done to deserve it, but maybe Aunt Light Fur is just kind enough to give these good touches simply because. So here, he will gift this Aunt Kind Touch back!

     He nuzzles into her cheek and purrs against her skin. Then he leans back and taps a paw to her fur, where a sprig of plum blossoms appears nestled without so much as a poof. More pretty flowers to go with the pretty flower already in her fur! ( He likes you too, Aunt Kind Touch! )

　　Tem does not think she’s any good with children, but little creatures that are basically children? Now those she can handle. A few stretches just to help work out some stiffness that’s built in her muscles catches the tanuki’s attention much more than she would’ve expected, and he eagerly begins to mimic her movements. It’s the cutest fucking thing she’s ever seen.

　　Tem drops the stretch she’s in the middle of, and crouches down beside Kichiboushi.  “ Here, lil guy, let me help you out. ”  It’s really just an excuse to see if he’ll be even cuter when she’s got her hands until his little arms, gently pushing them upwards.

　　It is cuter. She thinks she might cry.

     Like many of the things humans do, this reaching-for-nothing confuses him at first. Reaching here, reaching there. What are you reaching for, Auncle Pretty Fur? Then he sees how each reach seems to loosen something in her legs, smells how tiny sores fade the more she does this weird human thing, and he understands. Beyond normal stretching, this must also be how humans stretch their aches and pins away!

     Kichiboushi does not have any aches or pins that need stretching right now. But if there is anything all his time of living has taught him, it is that everything is better and more fun when done together! So he matches with Auncle Pretty Fur as best as he can, reaching for all these empty spaces here and there. Reaching for the skies is a bit harder when he has to stand so tall, but it’s okay because Auncle Pretty Fur is here to help!

     Softly and steadily does she hold him with her paws. Together, they reach for the skies in this strange human stretch. The pull Kichiboushi feels on his legs and back as they do so is very weird...but also very fun! Especially when he nearly falls onto his back and doesn’t because Auncle Pretty Fur is still holding him soft and steady. He looks up at his reliable companion and chirrs his appreciation! Thank you, Auncle Pretty Fur! Now, what weird-fun stretch next?

scuttles in here with my food headcanons! drops my “bake-danuki / yōkai prepare and process food very differently from mortals” agenda! which is closely connected to my “yōkai usually prepare food wholly with magic, which is why their dishes lack substance and can leave your stomach feeling vaguely empty ( or even emptier if prepared maliciously ) despite tasting good” and “yōkai don’t need food — esp. human food — but they eat food anyway because the way they process it can lead to them being captivated by its taste, which is affected by both how it’s prepared and the feelings that get infused in it ( i.e. all the feelings the chef felt in the cooking process )” agenda!

they can taste love! they can taste reverence! they can taste greed, and sorrow, and hate, and sooo many other things in any plate of food! the taste of any feelings is often purer and more powerful in human food though, since there’s no magic / spiritual energy to offset it.

not to say that yōkai can’t simply like food for its physical taste alone! kichi and the others still forage for their favourite wildfruits and such on a regular basis for a reason; it’s just that cooked food comes with an extra kick. even more so with human food! which is why while kichi won’t steal out of genuine ill will ( he won’t like. take food straight from human hands if it’s not offered or break into houses for leftovers lsdkfjdk ), if you just leave any food and even drinks unattended out in the open, he will take them!

offerings at an abandoned shrine? free yummies! meals and snacks left on the side of the road for someone / something who is not there right now and probably won’t be coming ( he hopes )? free yummies! leftover sake from a great night out and you’re all too blacked out to notice the bake-danuki very quietly asking if any of you will object to his taking of your bottles and flasks? free yummies!

food and drink is wonderful! so if kichi shares something actually edible and tasty with you, know and take heart in the knowledge that you are well-liked. he will ofc interpret offerings made to him the same way <3

[ off track ] CAUSE THAT SOUNDS PLAUSIBLE...

     Kichiboushi would not be big-talking if he said he knows this forest like he knows the curl of his leaf. As one who nests and has made his home with all these trees and flowers and fruits for so long, he’d have to be really boar-brained to not be so familiar with each sloping path or arching gateway or even clump of watergrass.

     As one who is also too distracted to remember what’s in his pouch of treasures right now — let alone the exact way his leaf curls — he thinks he can be forgiven for forgetting.

     A nimble paw glides along his back. It makes sure to get at the fur beneath his pouch, even brushes through the fluff of his very pleased tail juuuust right, and he sags impossibly further into the forelegs holding him safe and warm. His head already feels so fuzzy with bliss and the heady scent of honey and thick dew and softened earth that comes with that gentle grasp, then that magic paw does its magic thing again, and—! Please, Kichiboushi is only a young bake-danuki!

     See, Kichiboushi was being a good escort. He was leading Great Trees and Plains-gami through this home of his as he was so graciously asked to, but then Great Trees and Plains-gami had to pluck him from their shoulders. They had to carry him like he was a pup again. They had to use their divine touch to give divine scritches. And now look where they are!

     Kichiboushi isn’t. Looking, that is. He thinks Great Trees and Plains-gami is asking him which way is better in-between their strokes, but he can’t know for sure since he’s not really listening. He is just saying “yes-yes-yes” to every noise they make, because they can go and take him wherever they want so long as they don’t stop what they’re doing with their paw. Is this how all kami scratch and pat? No wonder why they are so loved and prayed to. Kichiboushi has never had a favourite kami before, but he believes he’s just found his first!
