Pete blinked, his eyes landing on the gun before looking back up at Noella with an expression that wasnât dissimilar to a deer in headlights. She couldnât be thinking what he thought she was thinking, but theyâd been doing a pretty good job at reading each otherâs minds up until now so he was doubtful he could be reading her wrong. He couldnât take his eyes away from the gun on the floor, all he could hear was Penny trying to bring Kurt back around. Riker saw his moment, Pete was distracted and his hold loosened ever so slightly on the bat. He raised the knee of his good leg and hit Pete in his groin. Pete keeled over, the bat dropping from his hands and Riker falling on top of him. He crawled across the writhing Pete, reaching out for the gun on the floor. He almost had it when it was snatched from out of his reach. He looked up and saw Penny holding it in her shaking hands. That didnât scare him. Pete managed to overcome the pain, throwing his fist into Rikerâs back. Riker turned over, grabbing the bat from the floor swinging clumsily into the side of Peteâs head. He fell like a ton of bricks. Riker struggled back to his feet, using the baseball bat as some sort of crutch. He looked to where Ruth lay and then his eyes met Noellaâs. He decided to run. He turned his back, beginning to run down the hallway away from them. He didnât get far before a shot echoed around them, and he fell face first. Penny opened her eyes, the smoking gun held out in front of her, and Rikerâs body in the direction she had it pointed.Â
Noella deeply didnât want to expect Riker turning around and fleeing, but when that turned out to be exactly the case, she knew he wasnât the same, vaguely sane-ish person anymore. She had prepared herself to chase after him, but didnât have the time to really move, as there was a loud bang. She saw Rikerâs body collapse, this being the seventh time that day alone that she had witnessed a near-murder incident. Her vision was beginning to blurry, so she blinked, a shiver running down her spine as she turned to look at Penny. She then began slowly approaching his body, the bloody baseball bat raised in her hands. Halfway there she got distracted by loud gasping, and turned around to see Ruth swinging a knife from the floor at Pennyâs leg. Kurt, who had gone back to his senses a while ago, was still trying to overcome the part of being ridiculously dizzy and in pain. From the corner of his eye he saw through some fog the newest turn of events and hazily counting the odds he mumbled at Penny, who was still standing above the weakened attacker; âJust fucking shoot her.â
