“I think he can handle that, as long as we use a tripod. Besides, the two of us need pictures together.”
“We do.” Kieran is struck with the realization that he may not have any pictures o himself with anybody else in camp. “I could set up a self-timer.”
maliacashe:
“What? Oh, shut up.” Malia grins. “We could take it to like, the Bronx, and give it to some random person. But not before we do a photoshoot.”
“You mean before I take pictures of you,” Kieran teases. “Or maybe I could teach Parker to push a button.”
maliacashe:
“You know I don’t have my driver’s license right? Besides, Bentley’s are ugly.”
“Don’t be so mean to the skinny kid.” Kieran runs a hand through his hair. “We can buy a car and leave it in the lot. I don’t care.”
maliacashe:
“Mmmm, why not. But let’s go to the city and then we can go shopping, too. I haven’t been to an actual store in forever.”
“Sure. What are you in need of? Clothes? Shoes? New Bentley Coupe?”
maliacashe:
“Hey!“ Malia hits his arm playfully. "That’s not fair, I’m not that bad.” She pauses, then sighs. “My dad is on my ass lately. ‘You can spend my money but not return my phone calls?’ I don’t wanna deal until I have to.”
“Really? My dad gives me money in lieu of real contact. If you really wanted, I could buy you a new phone. I could buy us both new phones.”

Malia sighed. “This is such like, first world problems. I figured I’d not be reckless with my money for once. Or something.”
“This isn’t the Malia I know.” Kieran grins. “Why the change?”
maliacashe:
Malia smirked. “Well, lucky us.”
“Why not get a new phone?”
“Ugh, my phone dies so fast.” Malia frowned at the low percentage and cleared the screen of her father’s text.
“Whatever,” she said, tossing it on the table in front of her. “Life’s better face to face, right?”
Kieran shrugged. "If you’re hot.”

“If you want, I can intercept your mail next year? Then you don’t have to deal with him at all.”
Kieran smirks. “I’ll let you know. At this rate, maybe next year he’ll send me plane tickets.”

“Why not? Was it some type of secret? Do you not expect to get a card from this guy, is he like not your dad? Or is he?”
Kieran sighs. “Because I don’t care for the attention,” he half answers.
maliacashe:
Malia presses her lips together, unsure if she should feel guilty. “Sometimes the mail takes a while to… Or maybe he’s just a jerk. Um. I’m sorry.“ She twists her ring around her finger. "Are you okay?”
Kieran shrugs. “I’m fine. Don’t have to deal with him for another year, so there’s that.”

“How come I can’t remember you ever telling me your birthday?” she asked, still surprised.
“Because I didn’t.”

Kennedy began to open the envelope, possibly hoping there’s something there that she could use to help ease the tension. She looked at the paper beside the 250 dollars in the envelope and with a surprised look on her face, she stared at Kieran for a moment. “At least they wished you a happy birthday,” she said gently, holding out the card. “It’s your birthday?” Kennedy’s heart dropped a little, feeling bad that she couldn’t recall the date of her brother’s birthday or if he had ever told her. She suddenly felt horrible that she probably forgot his birthday and looked like a horrible sister, concern and guilt written all over her face.
Kieran hesitates before taking the card from her. Walking back toward his beer, he turns it over in his hands. This is new. “Don’t feel bad,” Kieran replies flatly. “It was two days ago.”

The playful smirk disappears. Malia inspects the name on the envelope once more, then drops it on the coffee table along with the money. “I don’t need it. We can get something nice for the cabin.” She looks at Kieran again with poorly masked concern. “Um… Well, happy birthday?”
Kieran shrugs. “It was Wednesday.” He walks over to the coffee table and takes the envelope from under the cash and crushes that too. “And this came today, so clearly he forgot.”

Kennedy picked up the envelope from the coffee table where Kieran had put it looking at the name on the back. She lifted her eyebrows a little surprised. “So I’m guessing that you and this George M. Holt don’t have the best relationship,” she said.
Kieran shrugs, setting down his beer. “I suppose not, since that would imply that we have a relationship at all.”

Malia watches Kieran intently, but finds a smirk when she’s handed the offending item once again. She takes the envelope from Kieran’s name and looks at the name on the back. George M. Holt. Glancing at her brother, Malia takes a deep breath but makes no comment. Inside she finds two-hundred and fifty dollars and monogrammed stationary. “You sure you don’t want this?” she asks. “I think it’d be weird for me to hold onto something that says ‘Happy Birthday, Kieran’ on it.”
Kieran furrows his brows. “What do you mean?” He takes the piece of stationery from her hands, ignoring the cash. Kieran turns and paces slowly across the room, reading the note, scrawled on in blue ink. Something between fury and hurt catches audibly in Kieran’s throat, but he swallows it down, crushes the piece of paper in his fist, and turns back to Malia, seemingly unfazed. “You can keep the cash.”

Kennedy raised her eyebrows. “A telemarketer?” she asked. “What camp’s like getting junk mail now?” She looked at the fridge for a moment before getting up and grabbing a water from it. She leaned against the wall eyeing Kieran. “You really want me to believe it’s from a telemarketer?”
“Technically, I’m telling you the truth.” Kieran is sure that, among his father’s many deals, he had peddled many a product over some home shopping networks or similarly sleazy platforms. Kieran opens his beer with a loud snap. “But I don’t really care what you believe.” Tilting his head back, he takes a long sip.
