Anyone who reminds me of ACOTAR’s existence owes me 50 human dollars.
not trying to sound like a hater but the fact that sj/m killed her only woc for white angst and when she was rightfully criticized for it she introduced another woc only to kill her off (again for white angst) is preeetty fucked up
I Owe Antis an Apology For A Post
‘Aight.
I did something really problematic, and I didn’t realize it was really problematic when I did it, but I’ve been recently reminded of the problematic thing and I deleted the problematic thing, and I need to acknowledge it now because it’s weighing on me pretty heavily and I kind of want to be sick. This is in response to someone ~rightfully so~ calling me out for the problematic thing. I don’t know if this post will reach them. I don’t know if it will reach any of the people it may have hurt. But I’d rather have this on my blog than the problematic thing.

Not the BATB anon, but I just find it funny that SJ/M chose AC0TAR to be a retelling of a fairytale that basically says that looks shouldn't matter so much and then made a goddamn Beast drop-dead gorgeous and Feyrug fully aware of that, even fantasizing about how hot he must be under his mask. Almost like only beautiful people deserved to be in the centre of attention.
Yesssss. The themes of the AC0TAR books barely hold water as it is, but when you consider that it’s based on BATB, it becomes almost a self-parody. The implications of the AC0TAR series are completely opposite to the themes of the BATB fairy tale. If we can consider AC0TAR thematic at all, we can be generous and say that it’s about love conquering all, right? That’s how Faerug defeated A/marantha and how Tom Lane regained his powers. A/marantha tells Faerug that human hearts are fickle and weak and stupid, but Faerug proves her wrong through her actions to save Tom. But in AC0MAF she completely proves A/marantha right by jumping ship to the Night Court for “the most beautiful man [she’s] ever seen in her life.” That’s a canon quote about Rice from Faerug. What the hell?! Not only does that contradict everything Faerug fought for in the first book, but it also contradicts the point of the original fairy tale. SJ/M once said that she always wanted to write a fairy tale retelling and that was a huge part of her decision to write AC0TAR the way she did, but I find it very bizarre that she decided to go with BATB because she is so clearly obsessed with physical beauty. It’s like retelling Red Riding Hood and making the wolf a friendly bunny or making the Ugly Duckling a beautiful swan from birth. Gold star to SJ/M for the Spring Court mask thing I guess, if you can look past the ridiculousness of the concept. You can tell she really Tried to pretend that AC0TAR was gonna be anything like BATB but she just couldn’t resist the opportunity to surround her heroine with washboard-ab toxic white dudes. Ugh, it’s so cringey and such a missed opportunity.
sometimes if i need to feel better about my writing, i remind myself that sj/m wrote “forested steppes” and actually published it
Whenever I feel bad about something I write for class, I remember that sjm wrote the entire tog series and got super popular so I feel better about myself
TRUUUUUUUUUUUE
the sad thing about Rowan becoming a Name Trend in YA is that its actually a nice name just sjm ruined it
agreed!! it’s the new Aiden in YA (it was literally everywhere when i was in high school 🤯)
Consequently it was reading S/JM books that made me want to diversify and accurately represent cultures outside of my own in my books and they’ve drastically improved because of it so I guess I actually do owe her shitty work some credit
Former sjm fans of colour deserve financial compensation
T0G is so frustrating because it’s aesthetically awesome, but the execution is underwhelming to bad. Girl power, rising from the ashes, fiery queen? GIVE!!! Magic, dragons, fae, morally gray characters? YES!!! Huge tomes you could knock someone out with? MORE!!! Fake feminism, racism, abusive men, incoherent worldbuilding, bad people who are pushed at you as cinnamon rolls, lack of editing, ripping off popular works, etc? WTF!!! :( I just think her fans deserve so much better.
YES. she has such cool concepts but she never writes them to their full potential bc none of that matters to her. she can say all she wants that she loves writing fantasy and researching for the world-building and introducing all these magical creatures, but when you compare what she says to what she writes, it’s a complete lie. i with her readers would have more respect for themselves bc there are better books out there with better smut scenes by better authors. the smut is really the only reason they stick around, but sj/m sucks at it so i have no idea why they continuously choose her books over others.
Im finally reading Kingdom of Ass and alot of it is trash but the moment when Chaol and Dorian ran crying into each others arms was so wholesome
that’s what i’ve heard! it’s a pity that’s really their only interaction in the entire book 😩
David Attenborough: “an avalanche travels at 120kph and can smash anything in its path”
me remembering fae sex:
Pls Sjm, let Elain and Nesta be their own characters, live their own lives and love people whom they actually love—do not start on me with on Lucien and Cassian, forced bonds are terrible and stifling, and I don’t want them to suffer through predictable, heteronormativite tropes just for the romance—and let them be happy.
And for the love god, give Mor a girlfriend and actually show it. Not just mention it on the side and do nothing else. A happy and loving relationship. Please. I’m desperate
Rant: My problem with the Acotar-series as a whole wasn't really based on the disturbing fact that Feyre and the IC throughout the series were reduced to smut instead of character development, but rather that they were completely unrealistic and not fleshed out. Feyre herself was never really given any thought as she was mainly created to suit the male protagonists (first Tamlin, then Rhysand) narrative and paint them as perfect and experience sexual intimacy with them. (1/?)
I won’t erase the information that Feyre in some way is strong, but her strength always came from another person’s power. In Acotar (though the plot was very lacking until 75% of the book) she at least decided on her own to save Tamlin and proceeded to enter challenges without any inhuman powers given to her (by men), braced only with her ‘bravery’. At that point I didn’t necessarily dislike her (even though I also didn’t exactly like her), because she seemed to have an own voice. (2/?) But from ACOMAF even that was stripped off of her, so that we could focus more on her romantic relationship. And here it was pretty evident that not only SJM couldn’t write morally grey characters, but also that she didn’t know her characters enough to actally give them personalities. You see it can be excused for maybe ONE or TWO individuals to do a 180° change of character, but when almost everyone loses their traits and becomes someone else, you can safely assume that they never were (3/?) really given a true personality. Say what you want about JKR, but every single one of her characters never behaved out of character. You could see their development, could see exactly when they matured or when their world view changed slightly upon an event that influenced them. But with SJM not even her main characters develope, instead she gives them a whole new identity and thus shatters everything else she has built before. Even her relationships don’t show any form of growth. (4/?) Feysand is purely based on lust and sex (Rhys always commented on her curves, on her chest and constantly made sexual innuendos even before they were officially together-I mean he even fingered her beforehand and yet we’re supposed to believe that everything is based on emotions?) and only the little love declaration before their first time was the glimpse we got of their romance (which revealed a few new plotholes as Rhys claimed to have known she was his mate even as a human, but (5/?) just was a complete mess. Like I could not fathom what happened to him throughout the whole series and not once could understand his character (I disliked him in acotar, but was just weirded out by his non-existent personality for the rest of the series). In some way the Acotar-series feel like the work of a newly debuted author, not one who have already over 4 books under her belt. And that’s the main problem with SJM-it’s not like she has any good ideas as some feel like she does (8/9) (not one concept has been proven to be solely hers as courts etc. have already been widely used in fae fiction, so I was kind of surprised that a lot of antis seemed to acknowledge her as having good ideas), it’s that she never manages to really build a world in which the characters are believable enough. Everyone gets one trait and is silenced, while the writing is going through a roller coaster journey (one book is decently written, the other is just a catastrophe). I rest my case. (9/9)
UGH Tumblr ate #6 and 7, but I think I get the gist. Thank you for this rant; I feel like I vicariously experienced a catharsis just reading it! I agree with a lot of these points. I’m gonna bullet my responses under a cut so it’s easier to read.

What I’m most scared of concerning k0a is the way sj/m is going to write Man0ns character. The witches storyline is the only good thing left in this series but I have a horrible feeling it’s going to be ruined by man0rian smut. Not to mention that the best part about man0n was the fact that her flaws were actually acknowledged by the narrative which allowed for real character development. But now that she’s fighting for the good guys sj/m will try to prove that she’s PERFECT and ‘good all along’
I have so many fears for K0A. SJ/M has shown time and again she can’t be trusted to treat coded POC, LBGTQ, or characters who aren’t Rataelin/F.eysand with respect and care. I predict she will do an AC0WAR-like combination of white/straightwashing, retconning white and straight characters into minorities, and trying to overcompensate with new stereotypical minority characters popping up left and right. I think what might be more likely for Man0n is a character assassination to rival C.haol, Rice, and Tom Lane’s. C.haolaena was the main T0G fandom ship in 2012, so he had to get the ax in Q0S to make way for R0wan. M.alide and C.haorian had huge followings, so SJ/M had to clarify that they were all Straight. F/eylin was popular before AC0MAF, so Tom Lane had to become indubitably evil and L.ucien had to lose his complexity. Man0n is beloved by fans and antis alike because she’s far exceeded Alien and R0wan in complexity, relatability, moral ambiguity, and unpredictability. Therefore, I feel like SJ/M honestly might kill her or ruin her in an attempt to force everyone to love Alien. Either way, it’s SO unfortunate for me to say that there’s a high chance that the Man0n we know and love far more than Alien will be dead and gone by K0A.
