Black Media IS Mainstream Media
Over the course of this week my #MCO435 class touched on the trending topic of Black Twitter. Reading through the articles and listening to the sound bites provided made me realize that mainstream media’s practice of using content found on BT transcends the “twittersphere” and is a real issue. The narrative is that anything related to Black people in the media is separate from the mainstream. In reality, Black people in the media are an integral part of mainstream media. Just like Black Twitter is regular twitter or Black History is American History, Black media is just media. The idea that we need to diversify is what continues this absurd rhetoric keeping us separate. Until we figure out how to include one another while respecting our differences, I feel that this trend won't be slowing anytime soon. It is this reason alone that stays fastened to my core and is the propelling force for me continuing in the media field.
