I’m only responding to this because I’m assuming it was set off by what I reblogged earlier. Thumbs up for being one of those people who allows people to ship and not ship whatever they want. Because nobody should have to be shamed for that.

That said, I apologize if I offended you as a Doey shipper with my opinion. That’s why I didn’t want to put it in the Doey tag.

  I don’t even really care about that Daddy kink stuff? It’s not my cup of tea, but I also don’t care if it IS someone else’s. To each their own. And my opinion is not coming from the perspective of a Zoke fan—since I’m not one. Or even as the fan of Duncney that I am, because I ship both characters with a zillion other people. So it isn’t that I ‘decided’ not to like it just because.

I personally don’t ship Doey because even if she does bring out his “sweet side”—…so did everybody else he dated. To varying degrees. The difference here is that on top of bringing out his sweet side, Zoey additionally brings out his crazy insecure and self-destructive side. And although it may not be you—a big portion of the Doey shippers I’ve seen always make it so Duncan will like…burst into tears of joy at the sight of a butterfly. And that is just so out of character. I think even Zoey would be weirded out by that kind of behavior.

I think a lot of the artwork that Doey produces is very cute and sweet. I am very happy people enjoy it so much! But it’s not ‘wrong’ to interpret characters or relationships differently than someone else.

Sorry if this comes across as an attack, because I tried my best to word it very carefully so as not to make it seem that way.

hi id like to make a counter argument to some of those criticisms, if you dont mind

other people have brought out duncan’s soft side to some extent obviously but that factor is one of the appeals to doey because, like you said, they bring it out to varying degrees, and zoey would bring it out a lot more drastically than anyone else can. and soft duncan is just something people like a lot which is why his little plot in tdas was one of the only saving graces of that season, especially after seeing him treat courtney how he did in tdwt. it was just refreshing to watch after his soft side not being brought up since season 1

and well, yeah, zoey does bring out his insecure side but that doesnt necessarily have to be nothing but a negative thing like….she helps him acknowledge its existence instead of trying to cover it up all the time and in the long run she’d help him come to terms with himself and who he really is. it isnt just “she brings out his insecure and self-destructive side and it ends there” like bringing it out and finally acknowledging it is just the beginning of the healing process

and about the crying at the sight of a butterfly thing….yeah when people make those headcanons it’s a bit of an exaggeration ill admit but i dont think theyre meant to be taken 100% seriously and are really just made because it’s just silly and cute to think about. and even though theyre exaggerated theyre not TOTALLY off or making duncan completely out of character because, i mean, if i recall correctly…

but in all honesty if you dont ship doey then it’s perfectly fine! youre allowed to not ship it if it’s not your cup of tea i understand that. it’s just that i think your reasoning against it on astrid’s post was disregarding some of the most important parts of their relationship and also i wanted to justify/clear up some of the interpretations some doey shippers have

honestly i think doey has the potential to work out fairly well. i mean, i dont like gwuncan very much but i can admit that they’d be able to work out in the long run despite my feelings towards the ship. but like really it’s fine to not like doey, i just came here with the intention of everything being understood a little more

Of course you can argue your part, I obviously respect your opinion a lot on this particular matter since it’s your creation! And I definitely see where you’re coming from.

There is absolutely zero wrong with wanting to see Duncan’s softer side. It’s played up in a lot- if not all of his ships. It makes people laugh and aww because it ISN’T characteristic of him to have a little blanket named Mr. Fufflebottoms. But he does. The difference to me is people taking Duncan as an exclusively sweet character who is just hiding behind a tough persona. Instead of having both qualities—but one being his personality (tough punk dudebro) and the other being a secondary kind of habit or instinct. His affectionate and kind gestures aren’t what define him. Even though his crying at the idea of hurting a budgie is simultaneously hysterical and endearing.

That said, I don’t know if Zoey would bring out his soft side MORE than anyone else did. Duncan was pretty mushy and gooey with both Courtney and Gwen. The difference here is that he never felt unhappy about being sweet until Zoey. And while Gwen would probably have teased him for being mushy had she been paying any attention, I think she’d do it in a shoulder-punch “you know I love you” sort of way. And Courtney is tough and hits that aggressive/argumentative type he likes…but she also very much values his softer side too? Like with Bunny, for example. And if she was calling him things like “Dunkie” they were obviously being dumb romantics behind the scenes. Even if there was three dozen gallons of bossiness and fighting mixed in too.

Those things are not meant to detract from Doey though? Because like I said, I think it’s great that people are enjoying it so much! It’s just to say that I don’t think Zoey would be some magical answer to all of Duncan’s problems—like Doey isn’t completely paving any new ground or anything? Because most of its aspects are things he was also getting elsewhere. Just in different fashions since they’re all different ladies. They were supportive, too.

Not that I'm dying to get involved in SHIP DEBATE or anything, but here are a lot of various points brought up for interested parties. As I said in my original, and previously singular post on the matter, my personal objection to Doey isn't at all how it's portrayed in canon, or even the most basic fandom version of it, but rather a section of the fandom's interpretation of it that, whether it's meant as a joke or not (and it def. seems like it's more of a genuine interpretation than a joke??), is still bizarrely pervasive. Dude there are a lot of ways Doey could go and not all of them work for everyone, I definitely wouldn't say anyone's is "wrong," since the ship itself is more or less entirely fan-made, but some are more grounded in canon than others.   (just ftr duncan might have made friends with that one cute bird but he also punched an alligator in the face a whole bunch of times. it's a delicate balance apparently) Please do not reboggle if you're just trying to crease some shippers, both pro or anti!
