They're both small enough names that this went under-the-radar even in places that actually listen to rap, but I think the ISSBROKIE vs. Afourteen beef marks the first time in hip-hop history where an openly trans rapper unanimously defeated a cis rapper that was making fun of them for being trans. Which is honestly huge for a genre with such a long history of transphobia. Anyway this victory lap song goes hard

behind the bastards in the world in which classic books happened for real
Robert Evans: What’s… bleeeeh../ )ahshsh……. Behind! Bastards! Podcast! Bad people!
Andrew Ti: Haha
RE: Andrew I love you more than I love funding contras with drug money, do you like cowboys Andre?w?
AT: Not really? I’m more of a pirates guy
RE: have you heard about a guy called Judge Holden
RE: Whaaaaaaaaat is salarying my men! I'm Robert Evans, and this is Behind the Bastards, the only podcast that will improve your salary, that's a guarantee!
Garrison Davis: For all of our listeners, you will get a free salary, tax-free, in your PO box within two days of listening.
RE: They will, indeed, Garrison - that's an obligation, here at CoolZone Media. We do it every morning. Speaking of obligations nobody wants to fulfill but have to; Garrison, do you have a routine?
GD: Uh...yeah! Yeah, I having a morning routine, one that keeps me steady.
RE: Steady, wins the race, like the subject of our piece, who had never won the race harder until he abruptly didn't; See, Patrick Bateman-!
RE: POL POT!!!!! Hello, I’m Robert Evans and this is Behind the Bastards, the podcast where we start every episode yelling the name of a mass murderer… because I love you, so so much. Today we are followed by the only doctor you should listen to: KAVEEEH HODA. Kaveh. How are you feeling today?
KH: (laughing) I’m good, I’m good.
RE: Great. Now Kaveh, as a doctor, I suppose you have heard of a little thing called the hypocritical oath— I mean hypocritical oath—
KH: I don’t think I like where this is going, Robert.
RE: Me neither, Kaveh. What do you know about a man called Dr. Henry Jekyll?
Tokyo and all her Godfathers

how do you use reference images i always find that my stuff looks worse if i reference something vs just making stuff up out of my head
That’s likely a good sign that you need to be doing it more! The brain has a lot of little shortcuts it uses to figure out distance and trajectory and stuff like that. It’s how a lot of optical illusions work- taking advantage of those shortcuts to mislead the viewer’s brain into forming the wrong assumptions.
Drawing from the EYE, though, you bypass the ‘assumptions’ part and just copy what’s in front of you, and that serves the purpose of both strengthening your eye-to-hand communication AND teaching you to use those optical illusions yourself to enhance your work in other ways.
You know this image?
It says “this isn’t a pipe”. And it isn’t a pipe! It’s a DRAWING of a pipe.
The fact that it LOOKS like a pipe is an illusion. And that’s what representative art is: an illusion. Your brain assigning meaning to smears of graphite on paper, matching it to a shape it already knows from life and assigning it that meaning.
Thirdly, you don’t need to use the EXACT image you’re using as a reference and copy it entirely. You can use elements, or pieces- like using a picture of a cat to figure out the texture of a furry monster, or the patterns on a thylacine to add realistic stripes to a fantastical creature.
Most of the time, I personally use it like this: (and this will be frustrating, because I’m about to draw something realistic WITHOUT a reference, but…)
See, I KNOW what a hand looks like. Four fingers, one thumb, á certain number of knuckles and joints, where the thick palm parts go. But this still looks like a drawing. It takes a second to understand which parts are supposed to be which, ‘cause I’m not SEEING, I’m THINKING, and everyone’s brain has gaps.
Now here’s the photo I took to use as a reference:
And using this, I try again, substituting out the pen:
See the difference? Drawing with the mind VS drawing with the eye?
If I did this often enough, I could memorize enough of the image to draw a photorealistic hand from memory whenever I wanted, but I haven’t put that work in yet, and even if I DID, a reference makes it easier.
And if you’re working on something more unique and stylized? Do your sketch with the reference and then refine it from there. Use it for proportions and angles and foreshortening and colour and shadows and lighting and weight.
I cannot stress this enough, but using references and practicing from life are THE MOST VALUABLE TOOLS AT YOUR DISPOSAL AS AN ARTIST. You will NEVER run out of tools and inspiration if you know how to look for what you need. I swear my life on this
also as far as how to use reference images, at least for starting out, the grid method is really popular. i am awful at it, and my drawings with it often don't come out well, so i don't like to use it for finished pieces - but as a learning tool, it helps a lot with figuring out where you're going wrong, because you can see which squares are wonky and how they're wonky. for me at least, the grid method is super frustrating, so i don't practice it as often as i should - but if you're finding that stuff is coming out badly using a reference, it can really help for looking at why.
and honestly? tracing is your friend! people shit on it a lot and will talk about how it's lazy or cheating, but they are wrong. obviously if you're planning to sell your art, don't trace anything you don't have permission to use commercially, and don't trace for things that don't allow it (off the top of my head, i know artfight has rules against tracing). but for practice pieces, tracing can be really helpful for getting a physical feel for things like proportion, and what lines are used to construct a shape, and all that jazz. obviously it's easiest with digital art, but if you're doing traditional art you can use tracing paper or a lightbox (there's a lot of ways to DIY those).
