let me preface this by saying this is in no way a callout or something, i just genuinely don't understand why people enjoy whitney so much? maybe it's my own lack of interacting with them cause the consequences of it aren't great for my usual playstyle but!!

i've seen people's takes on a dol apocalypse thing here and there but frankly i think these people are visionaries

no this isn't inspired by my sordid adventures with zomboid

that being said i feel this is a pretty fun thing to think about! if dol was an apocalyptic survival thing, where would you as the player or your pc flock to?

ive always personally been a proponent of schools as ideal survival shelters but when it comes to my pcs

i know ada and gabriel would for sure stick with the temple, help the vulnerable and keep the place safe

varrel would 1000% book it for the smuggler's cave and make whatever deal it takes to be allowed in their little hideout

daniel would likely try staking it out with avery when shit hits the fan, but it's very unlikely that they'd be much help to the pc in that kinda situation

fern would likely hide away at kylar's and push him around to do most of the work for them

What's absolutely nuts about how little respect visual novels get is that people are just completely ignorant about basic features that are practically standard for every game ever released.

If you like playthroughs with no commentary, if you're fine with reading, but don't like the proverbial "pressing A for 20 hours", then did you know that practically every VN ever has an auto-mode?

The textboxes automatically advance after a short wait, and you can 9 times out of 10 go to the settings and change the speed at which the textboxes auto-advance, to perfectly tune it to how fast you can read.

Most visual novels you could care to name will have this feature. But if your favorite visual novel is Class of 09 you might not have realized how industry-standard this option is, because that game advertises auto-mode as a feature on its Steam page, as though it's something unique!

Even though, and this is the fucking kicker, Class of 09 was developed in Ren'Py, a python-based visual novel engine where auto-mode is included in every VN made in it by default!

But because Class of 09 is marketed as a visual novel for people who hate visual novels, it can afford to market itself not based on any actual history and knowledge about VNs, but against the lowest common denominator stereotype of what people who don't know any better think a visual novel is.

It's easy money, and all you have to do is have an underlying contempt for the medium you're trying to develop for.

NEW PC!!

I decided to play on another save and ended up making this guy. He doesn't communicate much with his peers, but he studies well, despite how often he dreams in class. After graduation, he often goes to work in an office. Sometimes he's not home all night. He prays almost all night… But where exactly, that's an interesting question. A hypophobe, he calmly opposes Whitley and often communicates with Sydney, because they attend the same church. Sydney will often be there before school. He even hides from the church the fact that he is fallen. Playing the role of a Love Interest is an extremely difficult character, because he can either take advantage of you or … And I'll tell you about it later)))

Y'all ever thought about how Sydney change from being this innocent sweet church boy who don't even know what sex is, to an insatiable sex-crazed maniac who also constantly reminds you that you did this (whatever this is, depends on you) and pretty much gaslights that you have it coming to you.

The first time i played the game and corrupted him, I was flabbergasted by his sudden change in behaviors, although the player, us, is fully aware of our choices, the PC however, might not (again, depends).

The reasons why I find myself liking Sydney corrupted version isn't even about his constant craving for carnal pleasure and his openness about sexuality, but more like, I adore how even called "Corrupted", Sydney is very much still have conscience and a sense of rightessness in him, even showing worries for Whitney or Robin if they haven't show up at school. Pure!Sydney also have this, but the difference is, if Pure!Sydney is just gonna give you a pat on the back and tell you to hang on, Corrupted!Sydney will physically want to seek out the person who harmed you.

It's just make the whole Prayer room scene even more traumatic for PC, who would have thought Sydney, who is even no longer an innocent boy still normally very calm and level-headed, would physically beat you into submission if you don't let him have his way.

It's just... kinda felt like betrayal ya know? How he always tells you that you made him who he is, like he have every rights to do this, to have this like you OWNED him, a price to pay for the things you did (doesn't matter intentionally or not) to him. After all, he loved you, yes, but also I feel like living in a town like that have twisted his mindset and how he perceive if someone should take responsibility for his own sexual awakening, consented or not. It's just, really another level of fucked up when you think about it, but also expected since it's been clear you can never really have a completely normal and healthy relationship with any of the LIs in this game lmao

As much as I stand Sydney, I'm so not going to ignore his negative traits (which, he HAVE). Pure!Sydney isn't completely ignorance, but too unbearably naive, thinking everything everyone can be solve with forgive and forget. Corrupted!Sydney is now aware of the town twisted shit and is willing to stand up to it if needed, unfortunately this also resulted in a kind of repressed agressiveness that can seriously cause irreversable damage if he snap, sometimes we catch glimpses of this agressiveness when someone try to put their hands on PC.

As if the Prayer Room isn't already enough of an evidence for this.

old post sure but not only are you spitting Facts op i also wanna add that i think it's absolutely insane how sydney manages to remain someone who wants to do good and is extremely aware of their own desires and their "wrongness" but can't help trashing and clawing on their way down when corrupted

to me sydney reads as someone incredibly scared even with their heart in the right place and i'm pretty sure it has to do with both the sheltered upbringing and whatever must have occured with the asylum's involvement

they're clearly someone who resents the notion of being abused themselves seeing how they accept punishment from leighton and tolerate whitney no matter what. they don't seem to register it as the horrible thing it is

i think a lot of their strange behaviour can be attributed to the fact that post-fall they're very much experiencing their own phase of you understand. that occurs with loss of innocence. they now understand that violence is what must be resorted to in order to do the right thing and won't hesitate to use it to get what they want either— at least with clouded judgement, it's easy to see their newfound understanding of the fact everyone in this town takes and takes and takes and— why shouldn't they?

they regret their actions in the aftermath, but it doesn't change the fact that even if briefly the madness sweeping across the town has crawled under their skin as well

there ought to be a reason why corrupting them raises hard world corruption and i would wager it's because they are capable of becoming a terrifying little vessel for all that is wrong with the town if they lose the veil of innocence protecting them

was dol a trip of getting into it for a lewd game to play on the side and then getting caught up in genuine eldritch horror of it for anyone else cause like

rant with some temple related spoilers below to be safe

christ i no joke lie awake sometimes thinking about that specific aspect of the game like. even if you could argue that the initial setup of a corrupt world and the dicothomy between lust and purity is a bit cliché it's cliché for a reason

the choice of lust as the source of depravity is also really good given how many of the other deadly sins easily fall under the umbrella of lust?? wrath can be conflated with particularly violent assault or sadism, envy needs no introduction when kylar or the other possessive lis exist, gluttony can easily be paired with the whole thing of needing to become one to the point of cannibalising another or craving their blood, greed is a monster already sweeping the town with exploitation being rampant and hell even sloth and just enjoying life with indulgences works out and don't get me started on pride and its satisfaction through degrading others or having your ego fed by being carnally desired

its the perfect gate for actual horrors brought about by a "sinful evil" and the fact that the alternative is not actual abstinence but attempts to desexualize sex to the point of ridding it of all it represents and what makes it human is Wild like. do you guys ever think about how the temple rapidly tries to brainwash people into thinking that everything from purging over contrition to the wall is normal? that it's not really carnal in nature at all, but just a necessity? like how incredibly fucked up is it to think of clergymen and women among their ranks who are punished for breaking their vows through something the temple rationalizes as better than what the very forces they're fighting against would see all people reduced to, just a horrid blur of using others and being used?

that's not even touching the idea of a town being slowly corrupted as the rich elite indulge in what will surely end them all for what? some carnal enjoyment? the elks feel above it all, watching the foxes be torn apart at their parties. they view it as little more than amusement for a gathering, how many do you think even understand what the ritual represents?
