Any experience level welcome! The goal is to start off with basic hammer skills and techniques that will allow people to get a sense of blacksmithing and create their own design. Instead of focusing on the highly technical specifics of forging a hammer or knife, we hope to take on a more experimental approach by exploring the advantages and various artistic forms that can be created through forging.

My little brother just got married last month and I finally got the time to finish their initials and put them together.

First 2 are of door pull and a pair of flat jaw tongs. The rest of the pics are of the tongs put together and fitted for 3/4 by 1/4 flat stock. And 3 lengths of chain and a tong ring.

Final project for the fall semester was a cusp hook, a flat jaw tong with a lap welded rains, and finally a T hook using a T weld and a ring weld.

Next project was learning how to forge weld and first one was a faggot weld.

One of the first things we learned how to make was cusp hooks. These are some food my first ones. They where made from 1/4 by 3/4

These EDC/Paring knives got finished up this week. The top is cocobolo with nickle silver pins and the bottom is olive and brass. Both are forged from 5160. #blacksmith #bladesmith #knifemaker #blade #handforged #edc #macabeemetals

A customer asked for a Star of David carved onto one of the Dog Tag flint strikers that I make.  It was a fun experience, and I really enjoyed seeing the Star stand out so proudly against the heat of the forge.

In today’s climate, talk of guns is politically incorrect.  It’s sad that we’ve reached this point in history, but that’s where we are.

Instead of “guns”, I talk about Art in the Everyday.  In this picture, we have a Colt 1911 semi-automatic pistol chambered for the .45ACP cartridge.  The pistol was designed by John Moses Browning at the behest of the US Military. What strikes me about this pistol is that it is the epitome of art in an everyday item.

The way people are raised today, they have to work hard to get past their preconceptions and prejudices.  But when they do, they see this magnificent design for what it is – pure artistry in motion.  It’s a mechanical wonder.

Nobody thinks twice when they say a Ferrari or Lamborghini is a marvel of technological art, but then they pull back when applying the same standard to a firearm. The Colt 1911 is, in my estimation, the epitome of handgun design.  The parts are all robust.  Mr. Browning maximized each part’s function to keep things to a minimum.  The angles are ergonomically pleasing.  The lines are visually balanced. What more could you ask for?  As a picture on your computer screen, how can you say it’s not art?  In the real world, the same standards apply and you can’t help but smile when you get to see this mechanical marvel in action - all the parts coming together in a synergistic manner, smoothly moving as they were designed.  

Not everyone can own a Ferrari or Lamborghini, but most everyone can afford something like the Colt 1911.  Thank you, Mr. Browning.
